Feb 1 - March 5 That's sun low in the sky time = warm light spectrum. Also happens in autumn. Why they fruit at those times. Also how you get long day and short day crops. I get that's kinda advanced for the average hobby gardener though.

One thing i've always wondered about, can you graft dragon fruit cactus to other cactus especies? cause there are other cactus especies that grow vertical trunks way easier, so they could be coupled to make a dragon fruit tree without support, like a sawaro as the "trunk" or others.

AWESOME! As you know, almost every video labelled "complete growing guide" on youtube just shows you how to plant something (usually seeds). Planting stuff is the easy part. I want to know how to take care of it afterwards! Your videos are so good at showing that. You know.... the important part! Thanks!

My dragonfruit journey began during the pandemic. We bought a colombiana fruit from a local farmer and was absolutely blown away by how sweet it was. I saved some seeds and germinated some in some water. Ended up with about 100 seedlings😂🤦🏽‍♂️ I grew stuff but not to the level that I am now. From veggies, to dragonfruit, to fruit trees, to kratky hydroponics, etc. Any old food safe container has a plant in it😂 My wife thinks I’m nuts. But she doesn’t complain when she take a scoop of a juicy sweet dragonfruit right from the yard. Or veggies. The taste difference is just ridiculous. Not even close. Nowadays, I am just addicted to gardening. My friends and family miss me😂

What an inspiring journey you’ve had with dragonfruit and gardening! It’s amazing how a simple purchase can spark such a passion. And how does your wife feel about your gardening adventures now?

@@fromfieldtofork Aloha🤙🏼🙏🏼 Don’t really have any tips except to have patience. Gardening helps with patience. Plus, it keeps me busy enough to stay out of trouble I guess😬🤣 At first my family used to think I was crazy. I actually thought and still think that they are crazy for thinking I’m crazy😂. How can “growing food” be a crazy thing. Insane to me. But that’s the materialistic world we live in right?? Most of society are so caught up in grocery stores, fast food, etc. that growing food seems weird and not cool I guess. To me, it’s an absolute necessity to have an ability to grow or even raise your food and try to be sustainable. Now that we have been eating fresh veggies for years, they have become more welcoming of the environment around them because of how delicious home grown vegetables are. HUGE difference!!! Goodluck to you and may all your family and friends benefit from your successes. Much aloha 🙏🏼🤙🏼

My wife's friend passed on a puny little dragonfruit start for me several years ago. That thing did nothing until I transplanted it into a bigger pot with fresh soil and really took off. I moved it inside to protect it during the cooler months, watching it develop. Then one of the cats ate it. I tried finding a new plant, but nobody in the area sold one, not even the "exotic" plant guy. I have some dried seeds, so I'll try again that way.

I have 18 dragon fruit in my indoor grow because of you!!! Mine are not looking quite like yours and since it's also where I start spring seeds it's tight quarters in there at the moment but once it's all done I'm going to build a rack to help trellis them. I'm letting them grow at the edge of a grow area so they'll only get light from one side but it is strong.. due to the light I can't do the method your doing so I'm picturing like a really long ladder and planting them in a row and sending them up and to flop forward...

Great guide. Thought I would comment on tipping plants.Apical dominance is the term. The growing shoot inhibits the growth of laterals. The further from the tip, the more likely laterals are to sprout. Think of a pine tree. It has very high apical dominance. As the growing tip moves upwards, it allows the lateral branches to extend producing a very uniform pyramid shape. Removal of the tip will remove the apical dominance allowing laterals to sprout. :)

My BIGGEST dragon fruit question, that I've yet to find a satisfactory answer for: Are the arms edible, like the pads on a nopale cactus?
@LilyAurora9
@LilyAurora9 4 ай бұрын
Hey, one way to find out! 😂 But in all seriousness, there is a safe way to find if plants are edible. Start by breaking it open and putting the juice onto a soft spot of your skin, like the wrist or elbow. If there’s a reaction, instantly that’s a no plant. Next step is a small taste of the juice. Wait at least 24 hours between each step. Basically take small steps like this with the food, trying it in different ways until you feel confident. I’d bet you probably can especially cooked up like nopales. This is how I was taught to try foods in a survival situation.

Cacti are so easy to propagate. I grow grow various types of prickly pear cactus. Some are extremely thorny, some are nearly thornless. Some have the typical round pads, some have elongated pads with scalloped edges. All have edible fruit. With the prickly pear cactus, the pads are also eaten. In Mexican cuisine, they are called nopales or nopalitos. Edit: To propagate prickly pear cactus I break off a young pad near the top of the plant, then simply poke the broken off end into a pot of moist soil. The kind of soil doesn't matter. You do need to make sure the pot drains properly. After that, the cactus plant is almost zero maintenance. You can keep it in a pot or you can transplant it in the ground.

My cuttings rooted and they were doing really well and I built a couple trellis's and got them transplanted. Now within a couple months later, I noticed some of the tops are getting yellow. I don't get a lot of sun where I'm at so I know it's most likely not sunburn just wondering if I may be watering them too much now which may be causing this? And is it best just to tip them now even though some have not reached the top yet?

I’ve got some royal palm trees in my yard. I’m hoping to use it as the support to dragon fruit.

Great video! After planting unrooted cuttings should you wait until they are rooted before using nitrogen high fertilizer or do you start fertilizing right away? How often should you water unrooted cuttings? Love your and Richard's videos!

I've got a dark star variety dragonfruit growing - I started it from cuttings at the beginning of October 2023 and it produced its first fruit 6 months later. I notice you said that the flower will open up in 30 to 35 days. Well, from my own experience with my dragonfruit plant, it took 2 weeks for the buds to fully open up. To be specific, I first noticed the bud on March 27th. It fully opened and was pollinated on April 10th. I harvested it on May 13th. So, 2 weeks to bloom, and 5 weeks or so until harvest. I don't know if the variety has anything to do with that.

My daughter took the seeds from a Vietnam White and germinated 2 dozen seeds.I potted them.Any hints? I'll be putting them along a wooded posted bob wire fence to be able to try them up.

Ive watched the entire video serie and have some knowledge about it. My question is: could I grow them even in the Czech republic? I know it’s not the best climate but my idea is that I’d move the plant out the house when it’s hot outside and keep it inside during autumn and winter.

Do you always prune off growth on the main stem between ground and top of trellis? I have mine planted in the ground and the are always sending off side shoots, I try and angle them up.
