The First Crusade was one of the most extraordinary, bloody and significant episodes in medieval history. It began with an appeal for aid from the Christian Byzantine Empire, threatened by the rising power of the Muslim Seljuk Turks. But when Pope Urban II preached a sermon at Clermont in 1095, the result was unlike anything ever seen before. The Pope offered spiritual salvation to those willing to go east to aid their fellow Christians in a holy war, and help liberate Jerusalem from Muslim rule. Knights and peasants alike signed up in their thousands, leading to the disastrous People's, or Peasants', Crusade, then to a much more organised and powerful Princes' Crusade. Their forces gathered at Constantinople, where they made an uneasy alliance with Byzantine Emperor Alexius I Comnenus. Entering Anatolia, they helped to win back the city of Nicaea, then won a decisive but hard-fought victory at Dorlyaeum, before marching on the great city of Antioch...

It's just unfortunate this isn't the first crusade. And he leaves out the beginning. The papacy built stone monuments and minted coins to commemorate the slaughter of the Christian albigensians, waldensians, and Donatists. This is historical revision. But everyone is so used to the lies by omissions and lies to the reasons if they ever did read the real history it would shock them. For instance the papacy had cannons made for the Muslim army that sacked Constantinople and rid them of their rivals in the orthodox sect of the apostate church.

These are some of the best videos on historical events you are ever going to see. The men leading this crusade deserve our respect. They sacrificed everything to participate in it. I think the Muslims although not agreeing with their faith, can appreciate their religious zeal. I don't condone what happened in the aftermath of taking Jerusalem but it was not the leaders that ordered the killings. It was actually the remnants of the people's crusade that was responsible for the massacre. They had no control over them.

This video lacks critical historical context and political explanation. Most of the crusaders were second or third born sons of the nobility with little opportunities at home. They joined the crusade like they joined any military campaign at these era : pillaging and raiding to make a living, that was their way of life and many crusaders were litterally infamous, not holy warriors

@knight templar Islam won because Christianity abolished itself. I will claim that 90% of Christians today don't even believe in god and if they even go to church it is only because of mere tradition or because they think it serves educational and moral purposes for their children. They believe in Darwinism and Big Bang and still go to church, they are hypocrites of the highest order.

Kılıjarslan 1:Rum(anatolian) Seljuk sultan, During the First Crusade, he defeated 20,000 crusaders with 5,000 cavalry at the battle of Civetot, and in this battle only 50 casualties, making Christians small. Then, in the dorylaum battle, he was defeated by the last minute reinforcements, while defeating an army 6 times bigger than his, however, 3000 casualties were lost, while the crusaders lost 4000. No. “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. Matthew 5:43‭-‬48 NIV bible.com/bible/111/mat.5.43-48.NIV Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord. On the contrary: “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. Romans 12:19‭-‬21 NIV bible.com/bible/111/rom.12.19-21.NIV

Seems really well researched and definitely emphasises the infighting amongst the crusaders. One thing it failed to point out though was the reasonings behind the Crusades in the the first place. Ths Byzantines had suffered multiple major defeats against the Seljuks and Alexios badly needed more men. He begged to the Pope for reinforcements to help him retake land in Anatolia. Meanwhile, Jerusalem had previously been under the control of the Fatimids. They allowed Christian and Jewish pilgrims to visit. However when the Seljuks took Jerusalem, they would rob and kill pilgrims. When the Pope saw Alexios needed men, he saw the perfect opportunity; his men would help the Byzantines in Anatolia before moving onwards to take Jerusalem. Ironically when the Crusaders would reach Jerusalem, the Fatimids had taken it back.

2:27 "To assert his own papal authority" is kind of underselling the whole situation he was dealing with. Not to mention it kind of accepts the idea of his legitimized authority without even acknowledging that this was *highly* contested. Plenty of people (including the freaking emperor) saw Clement as the legit Pope and he was only labelled an Antipope posthumously. I know it's an overview but to me that's a critical aspect of framing why events kept unfolding outside of any one person's control. No one had run an international expedition like this before. Any time nations had banded together before it was to operate on their own territory, not to attempt operations elsewhere on another party's behalf. There were all these unknowns of who had what authority, what goals, what obligations.

In France, you present the duchies of Flanders, Lorraine and Toulouse as if they were independent, when in reality they were vassals of the French/Frankish king (I know you the English refuse to recognize medieval France as French but as Frankish, as if you knew our history better than us). You made a mistake but I'm not surprised coming of an Englishman. .. I don't know why but the English like to show medieval France as a shattered province when in reality it was a kingdom that was just decentralized ...
