Epicurus (341 BCE - 270 BCE) was an ancient Greek philosopher and founder of the Epicureanism school of philosophy. He believed that the purpose of human life was to attain happiness and inner peace, which he defined as freedom from fear and pain. Epicurus emphasized the importance of living a simple and moderate life, avoiding excess and unnecessary desires. He taught that the gods did not interfere in human affairs, and that death should not be feared, as it simply meant the end of consciousness. Epicurus believed that knowledge could only be gained through the senses and that pleasure was the highest good. His philosophy has had a significant impact on Western thought, particularly in the areas of ethics and the nature of happiness.
