The subspecies (of which there are at least 27) that lived exclusively in the New England States is extinct. With the Florida Panter sub-spieces next in line for extinction. The American Lion goes by several names depending on where they are located. In the New England States they're known as Caterwauls, in Florida as Panthers, commonly called Mountain Lions by practically everyone, in the Rocky Mountains from Canada to Central America as Cougars. The Western Mountain Lions are migrating across the USA as young cats are looking for their own territories. They've even been seen in Iowa and Illinois where one was hit and killed by a Rock Island Line train.

It ain't about adapting, it is about how us humans hunt them to extinction or causes them to go extinct by destroying their habitat, poaching, introducing foreign and evasive species and such, just some uneducated humans caused all of this, it is too late for these species but it is not for the ones that are left, we need to do something to save them and stop the likes of poachers, rich game hunters and such from killing them, they do not care about the animal only money or selling their kills for profit, black market likes this and more profit if the animal is extinct, so yeah
