No actually the way that’s set up is like this. By blowing a torpedo up under the keel of a ship you create a void of water or a big high pressure bubble. The force of this basically cracks the keel of the ship. Once you break the ships back it comes apart and fills with water. This is how a magnetic torpedo pistol works, it’s also how a MK48 ADCAP torpedo works today. By blowing up under a ship that’s usually hollow you destroy the only structure there the keel.

some actually do, the Germans invented sound guide torpedo to counter Destroyers. as for no guidance torpedo they can fire in a straight line at a prefixed angle
