Epilepsy and stopping seizures
When your brain becomes too excitable and starts to fire out of control this can start in a small region of the brain and then spread over a wider ares, this is what causes an epileptic seizure
Most people can control it with medicines but this does not work in about one third of cases
It has been known that stress can worsen epilepsy so practices such as yoga, meditation and mindfulness training and playing sports may help (though it depends on which sports).
There are studies that have indicated that the seizures can be reduced by using biofeedback training
These are techniques that give you information about you body, things like controlling blood pressure.
In the medical world this has been thought of as working through the placebo effect so is fairly controversial
How can it be applied to epilepsy, people can be trained to raise their level of mental alertness this is linked to how much we sweat.
So they have pads on their hands which are connected to a computer which monitors and gives feedback on sweat gland activity
So the computer tells you that you're starting to sweat before you actually feel it then you can see if you sense anything in your body that indicates a change.
The actual science behind it is unclear but if you have had a seizure you may be aware of a strange sensation such as an odd taste or a feeling of deja vu
With biofeedback training people can deliberately raise their alertness when they get that sense and this has been shown to cut seizures in those who do not get warning signs.
This was trialled by Yoko Nagi of Brighton and Sussex Medical School tested this involving 38 people and more than half of them who received the training saw a decrease in the number of seizures over the course of a month by more than 50%
Brain scans showed that those who benefited the most showed an increase in connectivity between the temporal lobes down the side of the brain where peoples seizures usually start and also parts of the prefrontal cortex which is involved in higher cognitive functions
Previous research has shown that the nerve bundle that connects the two regions is the main path that seizures spread from the temporal lobes to the rest of the brain, if this is surgically cut it can reduce seizures .
So this may sound very very woo wooo but the basic principle is that when you get that odd sensation before a seizure you raise your alertness of that sensation, become more aware of this and this could reduce your seizures.
Do you have any experience of this technique?
Do you have seizures?
What do you do to control them?
