In this video the Epiphone Les Paul Custom and Epiphone Les Paul Prophecy go head to head to answer the question: Which one should you buy?
Both electric guitars are affordable, stacked with features, and are brilliant guitars but only one can come out on top. Both the Prophecy and the Custom share some features but differ wildly in others and, when you can only get one, it can be hard to know which to choose.

I'm 52. When I was 16 in 1986, about 4 months after my dad and his lil' bro-in-law(mom's lil' bro and fav-uncle) pitched in to buy me my first Gibson Les Paul deluxe(used 1976 model) he died of a heart attack. The man loved fried chicken, BBQ, and ice cream. But mostly, he loved music. He instilled that into me early on. So to you two gentlemen, please know that my heart❤ is with you. He's been gone a long time and so has that guitar. But i've healed over time and so will you. Just always know that there are people who love you so much and can't imagine their lives without you. Lastly, I got me a few of them Les Pauls. No greater guitar is there. I love em' all! Strats, Tele's, V's, Explorer's, Dinky's, and ALL brands! But nothing compares to the Gibson/Epiphone Les Paul design. Even PRS's are freakin' badd ass. But the Gibson/Epiphone Les Paul is a beast of a machine. Plus, Epiphone have really stepped up their quality. Their QC department has improved a ton. As for your test: ITS A DRAW! LOL! The custom gives that solid, rock-heavy metal thunder, gotcha-in-the-clutch, heaviness. The prophecy gives you that punch in the face/gut-piercing, shreddiful, greatness! So for me, its a draw. I'm an old school guy in some ways...but I still would choose the prophecy. I play a lot of country, blues, rock stuff. I like the idea of traditions updated and streamlined as technology and learning evolves. So the prophecy takes me there. The Fishmans also have a traditional voice option. It philosophically aligns with the desire to take traditional 50's, 60's, 70's style music...but produced through a modern filter.

Great job, and had to subscribe. Finally found a Prophecy. Great guitar, and fluency pickups are a great touch. I also installed them on my 85 black Gibson custom some time ago. The company was great during the install process. Also found a white Epi to keep my Gibson company. The epi always plays well enough to keep you coming back. The Prophecy’s neck is really thin at the nut/tuner end and can change pitch when getting aggressive. So you just need to blend the change with alittle bend, slide up or what ever comes to mind when it happens. That’s what creativity comes from, so call it an inspiration opportunity. Playing guitar since 1969 and it has got me through some very tuff personal times. Still play allot, as I find it’s an instrument that you can never feel your good enough. Like a video game, once you’ve mastered it ya kinda put it away and on to the next game. The guitar has been with me and will always be with me till the big sleep. Which one goes in the forever tub with me is a corn buckle of a problem though? Great job on the presentation, and keep it coming, and Thanks.

Nice video, I have the Custom that you played and also the Jerry Cantrell Wino. The Wino feels just a bit better. I wanted the Prophecy, but after you said it plays more like the SG. I’ll have to give it more thought. I have one Epi SG and I just can’t get as comfortable with it

I bought the Epiphone Les Paul Custom Pro in Koa recently. The custom pro has the ability to split the pick-ups along with a phase inverter built in. It's an increddible guitar and the flexibility in the sound capability is almost endless... Great video but in my opinion I liked the sound of the Epiphone Les Paul Custom you played. In the early 90's I had an original Gibson Les Paul studio that I put active EMG 81 (bridge) and active EMG 89 at the neck so it was splitable...It was an excellent guitar for 80s and 90s rock music through a Marshall Triple Super Lead 100 watt amp I was playing it through...

The custom is pretty much at the top of my price range and the prophecy maybe slightly above. I have been debating between an epiphone custom or standard... PS. Sorry for your loss! I sold my epi LP custom about 5 years ago and it's one of the biggest musical regrets I have (not going to pendulums farewell show down here in Australia is still no.1 in that). You make a good argument for the prophecy but I'm still sold on the custom my dude And I'm sorry to hear of the passing of your old man. I lost my dad too back in Feb of this year, he was 65. It really sucks and I'm not sure how to put it in any other way. Keep up the vids and keep on doing what you both loved!

I have a koa custom. I multitrack my guitar tracks. I use the Koa for the chugging rhythm guitar parts and I use my American professional strat for the clean riffs in the breaks. I use my PRS custom 24 with Seymour Duncan alpha omegas for leads.

That riff you played is sick... Anyway, loved the riff tones of the prophecy, but for some reason the leads had more character on the custom... At least for me.. That said im an old school metal guy and the custom seemed to have that familiar tone I grew up on.. But both sounded awesome to my ears.. Id edge towards the prophecy due to its flexibility...

14 and I've only been playing guitar for a couple years. I'm self-taught so I'm not that great but I have a guitar addiction. Instead of asking for presents and things for Christmas this year I'm going to ask for money and save up for either a new electric guitar or a new acoustic guitar. I've always wanted a Les Paul because all of my heroes played them. Jimmy Page, Slash etc. I've been looking at the Epiphone Les Paul custom because I can definitely not afford a Gibson. I was looking at the white one and I've showed a lot of my family members like my father and he said it's really cool. But then I saw the limited edition cream colored one and I didn't really like it, but then I saw your other video where you show off your koa Epiphone. I fell in love the second I saw it and I showed it to my dad. Sorry for this long paragraph, but I'm getting that guitar I don't care. When I saw your other video I thought "guys got to have at least 100,000 followers," great quality video and I really enjoyed it. Thank you. Your highly underrated.

I got a Prophecy a few weeks ago. I hated it at first, almost sold it. I'm glad I didn't, it is one of my favorites now!!!! It does feel more like an SG than a Les Paul. He is right about the longer scale neck, different bridge placement, and tighter space between pickups. It feels weird for a LP, but it grows on you.

I've found the probuckers really benefit from dialing in the pickup height and pole positions. They can really wail once you get them set properly!

I owned the Prophecy and due to some defects, sent it back. I also owned the new Custom, in Alpine White. I ended up selling that. But now I own the new Epiphone Les Paul Adam Jones Custom "Veil of Bees". And it's probably the best Epiphone I've ever played. I like my Epiphone '59, but I LOVE my Adam Jones Custom. There's something special about a Custom Silverburst, and this one has some pretty unique features. If you're able to get your hands on one, I'd highly recommend it! I dig your channel dude, good work. 🎸✌️

Great video thanks man. I personally perfer the Epiphone Les Paul Custom Pro in Koa/ It's a more authentic Les Paul sound. This new Les Paul is cool especially for the money but it's a departure from what you expect from a Les Paul into more of a Shread gtr. It's wicked cool and I'd like to see the next version of this with better pick ups maybe EMG's or something more traditional Les Paul. With that said, for me it all comes down to how a gtr feels in your hand. I've played a Parker Fly for the last 20 years so I haven't been able to wrap my hands around a Les Paul next in two decades. They all feel like a plank of wood in comparision to the beautiful thin Parker neck profile I've gotten used to, so in that sense, I'm excited about the prophecy. I might actually be able to get a Les Paul gtr to my collection. I may wait for the next version they bring out. Thanks again man for the video.

great video! Just what I was looking for. Im on the fence between th Koa version, the wino and this prophecy.I play mostly metal and doom with some blues and rock thrown in. Appreciate you dude, thank you 🤘 The Koa isn’t weight relieved at all, it’s a heavy beast! If it does make a tonal difference I couldn’t tell you mate because the pickups make both guitars sound so different. If you need something that versatile, tonally, I would grab the prophecy. With the dual voices it will nail all that for you. The Koa would have a harder time though not by a massive amount. In terms of the Wino, I love the look of it but haven’t played one yet. Sick guitar to stare at though haha Thanks again dude!

The one think that I do is that the wino has the same pickups as a regular Custom so for me, I’d probably still prefer the Prophecy for its tones. Hope that helps mate! 🤘

I have the prophecy. I have never ever had a better guitar. Even next to my gibbys. The amount of dial-in with the Fishman PAF voicings is just unreal. I play skinny top-beefy bottom and I love burstbucker-490/498 t sound but when I say the prophecy plays like a dream it’s an understatement. If you’re coming from superstrats it will change your life. Best modern voicing of all time, and that single coil/p90 coil split tone is so real I reach for my GIBSON LESS. Mind-blowing. Biggest advice is get a setup with épis. A lot of qc issues on fretwork not present on Gibson.

I have the Custom Koa, it is the nicest Epiphone I have, I do love the inlays on the (SG)Prophecy, but I'm not too fond of the pickups, the entire active pickup thing is a joke. I plan on routing out my control cavity and upgrading to 4 controls and P90s, the pickup choice is staggeringly bad. My Koa-topped Custom LP is a real gem, the top is gorgeous. The locking tuners are a nice upgrade, frankly, I think all guitars should come with them, even vintage recreations. So sorry for your loss, it can never be easy.

The Prophecy is about the pickups. The custom has Probuckers from the factory. A silverburst custom with your choice of pickups and switching/tonal options is hard to beat for the price.

That Les Paul Custom is the KOA top on a mahogany body and the Prophecy is all mahogany. The tone sounds richer on the KOA to me with more clarity in the highs. It's probably the pick up difference. I have two Epiphone Les Paul Custom Pro guitars, one in Alpine White and the other in Black. I would definitely like the KOA finish. Keep on Rocking!

The custom has warmer sounding pickups compared to the prophecy, at least to my ears. I prefer the custom as i own one, and is more my cup of tea. Both great guitars though, just depends what you're looking for. The prophecy could do with a whammy bar

I noticed the sound of the moved neck pickup in a 24 fret situation when the Ibanez RG 550 came out. There's a bit less "woof" that a lot of people might like. Also, guitar makers have been doing gloss finishes for centuries without them feeling "that terrible". It didn't seem to hurt '54 Stratocasters or '59 Les Pauls. The modern view of this is really funny. Don't grab it like a baseball bat and it's usually not a problem.

That's true! You get a little less bass response in the neck position and I have to say I don't hate it! The problem with gloss for me is it just feels horrid on my thumb, way too sticky dude. If gloss is your thing then by all means go for it though! Thanks for watching man 🤘

Hey! I'm looking into learning guitar and I want a guitar that can last me many years and I am torn between an Epiphone Custom and the 1959 Standard Outfit. I am not a metal guy through and through but I might learn some metal songs here and there. I listen mostly to rock and alternative rock. I love the way the customs look but is the 1959 worth the extra money for the Gibson pick ups? Do you have any experience with that guitar? The difference in pickups is probably not worth the extra cost considering the Customs are a better guitar than a standard. But that’s just my two cents, I’d say get the one that you like the most. The pickups won’t matter too much to you really ✌️

if you had the koa custom PRO and not just the normal koa custom, you'd have coil split on that as well. I think that would be a better comparison. cool vid tho, i prefer the custom because it is 22 fret. The only 24 fretter i had was a bc rich warlock, i think its more of a metal thing. If you keep the same scale length but add frets its harder to bend those higher notes. if you adjust the scale length to accomodate the frets, you add tension and it is harder to bend. either way you lose. if you dont need 24 frets, i say 22 all day.

I have both models. Each one has its good part and one is not better than the other. But I prefer the Custom Koa, the sound off the like Probucker better. They are very good pickups, equal to those of any Gibson.The Fishman Fluence are different, the modern sound is the only one that works. The Paf and the single have nothing to do with it. Having 24 frets makes the neck longer and the feeling is not the same . If you are looking for a vintage sound, the Custom Koa is better, which is also a beautiful model.If, on the other hand, you want a sound with more body and power, then the Prophecy is yours.

i never liked the les paul shaped body, i find access to the higher frets very difficult, that being said, if i were going to get a les paul shaped guitar, it would be the esp ltd ec artic metal, it is more comfortable than the epiphone les pauls because of the tummy cut.

The Prophecy has the best neck carve of ANY Epiphone, except the AJ sig. There's other Epiphone models that have the asymetrical slim taper, including the Modern and Muse. But the LP custom silverburst is thee best standard production model Epiphone currently makes, in my opinion. I just cannot stand the 60's slim taper neck they come with. Maybe for people with smaller hands they're OK. I physically can't play barr chords near the nut on one. It actually hurts my wrist to try.
