Underappreciated perk of the Epiphone Modern is that the back doesn't have the awful looking veneer that the other models do and you can just see the nice looking mahogany wood grain.

George, make sure the switch tip isn't screwed down too far, that can keep it from throwing all the way to the bridge or neck detent of the switch by bumping into the rim. Twist out the tip until it just clears, if that's the problem. It may seem silly but I've seen it happen a couple times.

I get tempted by the review to try this guitar but then the reviewer says the first one was a dud and many comments say they have issues with finish and electronics of Epi guitars. I bought the lowest end PRS S2 single cut a few years ago and the fit, finish, functionality and sound are all very good. I bought the satin flat black with dot inlays for $1,050 which isn't a fancy guitar. It is basically a LP clone but it does have a pick guard attached to the body and it is all mahogany - no maple top. I have 4 different e-guitars and it is the easiest to play and it sounds the best. It even plays better than my 1997 Heritage H535 which goes for $3,000 new. Still might try these but I would probably buy locally so I could have easy access to return it if it is a dud.

How does this one compare to the epiphone les paul custom? Which one would you prefer?
@pepperoni_tony Жыл бұрын
hey man i recently bought a modern (graphite) and was debating between it and the custom so i played both a good bit. custom looks better from the front (black/gold) but the modern looks better from the back if you pick a good grain from sweet water. i played both with no amp and with a orange crush 30w. both sounded similar for the most part but i felt the custom sounded “thicker” unplugged but “muddier” plugged in (used same clean tones on both. i loved the option for coil split and i felt the neck pup split hit the “slow dancing in a burning room” test pretty well. modern was noticeably lighter. neck felt to me a lot better on the modern, thick on bass for thumb over playing, thin on treble side for easier barres. if it’s not obvious i’m a big strat guy and not super into vintage so the modern fits a lot of what i love and leaves the stuff i hate (like a chunky neck in the custom) and i’ve heard similar things from other strat lovers about the modern. lastly, when i tried the modern, they pulled it out of a fresh box for me so i got to see out of box quality. no sharp frets but the ends could do some polishing. some scratchy frets around the 12th and beyond but no dead frets or unleved ones. came with .10s and average action with good neck relief. i probably played it for an hour and i’m not sure if they left some stain on the ebony or they colored it for pictures but my finger tips turned very slightly black, but when i genuinely tried rub the fretboard to check how easily it came off, nothing did it was strange. i’ve read similar things from reddit and they say it stops after a while and is just stain.overall one of the best new guitars i’ve pulled from a box. mine arrives tomorrow morning so if you want to see QC on another one lmk. i also recommend if you buy a modern to do it through sweet water as i called them and they let me choose my specific guitar from all they had so i could find a really good grain on the back!

You guys are totally awesome. Thanks for hearing my comments on the first review and giving this guitar model another try. I really agreed with your assessment last time - that particular guitar was horrible, and you were actually very generous with your review. However, I was also super bummed because I’ve never seen anyone post reviews on dealers sites or elsewhere on social media that their Epiphone Modern or Modern Figured had anything more than tiny cosmetic flaws. Most have reported flawless guitars with amazing necks and pickups, and major overall bang for the buck in the spec/features department. I respect that you thought about my comments some more and decided to give the Modern another fair shot. You just taught people a solid lesson to always try again if there are issues with a particular guitar. Most of the time, odds are the second guitar will be great when the general reviews for a particular model are generally really favorable. It meant a lot to me that I was not only heard, but that you acted on it by doing a second review. Perhaps others who has similar comments on the first review feel the same way. I don’t even think I’ve ever seen any channel go back and do a second review. The Epiphone Modern and Modern Flamed deserve far more attention than the new models that are nearly double in cost. I don't know if it's your amp, and mixing, or playing...but that demo was very hard to listen to. I've owned Gibson's, and Epiphone products, they're antiques, and are anti-value, unless you're a Gibson collector. Gibson products looks incredible, and looks matter at times, not much beats a Gibson there. If function, and musicality are the result you want, ESP and Harley Benton(as extreme examples of each end, both better value than Gibson) have *far* better products when it comes to playability.

"Anti value"? Nah, Epis deliver very well for their price, they sound really good. Look "Epiphone modern les paul review" by Gorilla Guitars and you will hear how good they can sound. Well your Epiphones are essentially Chibsons. But don’t mistake Epiphone to be nearly as good as Gibson. The difference is amateur vs pro. Wood quality, pickups, electronics, PLEK, the finishing, nitro paint, it’s just not comparable. The Epiphone will satisfy only your eyes while the Gibson will satisfy everything (other than your pocket lol). If you’re strapped for budget do yourselves a favor and buy a used Gibson instead or a new tribute special. It’ll destroy this guitar
@ricochet8104 Жыл бұрын
I don't think so. Gibson is terribly overrated, and their guitars are SERIOUSLY overpriced, being that they are only decent competitors to Fender. Their construction is outdated and have several flaws. Epiphone models are more accesible, more modern, they have more innovations both in design and in electronics, they don't suffer from Gibson's design flaws. and overall is literally a better choice to buy a high-end Epi, that will probably sound as good as a standard Gibson but being three times cheaper. Why would you buy a high-end gibson when you can spend that money in a terrific fender model, or an ibanez like the JS series, or a Jackson pro series model, wich are literally better, and have more features, only by half the price? High-end Epiphones models like this one or the LP custom end up being a better alternative.
@ryant3600 Жыл бұрын
yeah that's a bunch of crap..Epi's are way better than the Chibsons. I have a Chibson, I have a few Epi's, I have a harley Benton Lp and a Gibby LP. To be perfectly honest, the HB 550 plus EMG that I have was my favorite LP style guitar. It looks, feels and sounds amazing. And it's lighter than my Epi 60's standard and nearly a pound lighter than my Gibby custom. However, about a month ago I got the Epi modern LP, i have a feeling once I change out the pups it might be my favorite. I love how light it is, and it feels great to play. Love the neck profile on it as well. And most of all it's like 2300 less than the Gibson version..

Epiphone sucks for years now. Gibson went from worst to acceptable. Since 2010 good Epiphone is an average Gibson and an exceptionnal Gibson is one guitar on at least twenty.

What? Models like this one or the Epi custom les paul are pretty good. Gibson models are so expensive that buying a cheaper, and better, ibanez or fender ends up being a better alternative. Also at least epiphone adds more variation to their models and worry to innovate, something Gibson doesn't, and being the main reason why the brand is decaying so much. And not only that, but Epiphones are literally better in terms of construction than Gibson guitars, and it has nothing to do with the country where they're fabricated, but because of Gibson's outdated manufcaturing.

@@ricochet8104 I can't blame you if you can't feel the difference between a good guitar and an Epiphone. All the Epiphone I had played since 2010 have an issue : bad fretting, fret buzz, dead potentiometers, dead female jack, detuning, bowed neck... acoustic and electric. Maybe it's the European importation that sucks.

@@travelerworld4212 What are you talking about? About the difference between decent to good guitars (Epiphones) and straight up outdated, overprized, badly manufactured, overrated guitars (Gibson)? I don't know what models are you talking about, no Epiphone of mine or from a friend ever had this issues. Now, you could ask the same question to all people complaining about Gibson's headstocks / tunning stability. Or yes, maybe it is the importation.

@@ricochet8104 I'm talking about Les Pauls, SG, archtops, acoustics... even the Inspired by Gibson have technical issues like bad fretting, needing a fret reset even if they were brand new. That's a mess!!

@@travelerworld4212 I never saw one either with bad fretting or needing a fret reset. Not only that, but epiphone has done nothing but improve their quality over the years. Not only that, but the only guitars were i saw those issues being consistent were Squier guitars. And even in the case that most epiphones had those issues, the price of the guitar plus the reparation would still be more worth it than buying a Gibson. Plus, they have the sound quality of a standard gibson with a much better price.
