Epiphone SG Korea 1997

I just acquired a 1997 Epi SG, G-400 Made in Korea that I am currently restoring. One thing that is very unusual is the pickups, the baseplate is not screwed to the upper pickup assembly and the pickup cover is not soldered to the baseplate, its glued. The negative wire of the pickup is soldered to the baseplate. I wonder what Epiphone was thinking when they designed these pickups? In my case the glued failed and the upper part of the pickup (with the cover) came loose on both pickups. Curious why they chose not to solder the cover to the baseplate, do you happen to know? Ground loop issues?

What is better? A gibson plugged in a cheap tube amplifier, or a cheap Epiphone plugged in a marshall?

I vote for the cheap guitar plugged into any kind of good amp.

Hi Stephan, thanks for the comment! It's quite difficult to arrive to a good answer, but i should say it's better in terms of "final product" to get a cheap guitar and good amp but the experience will be better to play a good guitar with a low budget amp.

que buena onda che! yo tengo ésta misma para zurdos hecha en el 93'. Para mi suenan mucho mejor que las nuevas hechas en China.

Hola! Bueno algunas son buenas otras son malas..es un poco lotería. Si es verdad que las maderas y detalles estan mejores en las Koreanas, las pastillas creo que también...el resto de la electronica no se si mejor...es relativo, he visto Koreanas con electrónica muy mala y las más nuevas parece que tienen mejor electrónica que las viejas. Es todo un poco lotería al final pero en resultado final si que tienen más puntos a favor.
