40+ years ago, I learned to bang chords out of a box and fingerpick a little, but never progressed. At 63, I'm teaching myself music theory and I have my pentatonics down well, and I'm ready to buy my first electric. Oh, how I've agonized over this decision. I've crammed about 50 hours of learning this subject into the last week, and have read a lot of reviews, many not trustworthy. I was prepared to spend $1,500, but dreaded making the wrong choice. But I realize now that I needed to be sold on the man giving the opinion before I could trust the opinion, and Jack has sold me. I trust Jack's info and the guitar sounds great. I'll play one at GC before I buy, but I'm relieved to have found my first electric. I'm approaching retirement and I want to be ready for my next career as a rock n roll star. Thank you, Jack. I'll see you on the road.

I am a Blues guy who has owned a bunch of Gibsons , but this is my guitar of choice . Started playing in 1963 , my first 3 electric guitars were USA Epiphones . This was my first “real” electric guitar, a 2009 Ebony Sheraton ii. I was on a family trip to the big city and wanted an electric guitar. I was looking for a casino because John Lennon was my guitar hero at the time. I was met with two choices, a natural Dot studio, or this. When I plugged it in I was in love. Since then I’ve made several changes over the years as I’ve grown as a player. I took the stop bar off and filled in the holes with wood putty and put a bright gold bigsby on it. For a while the bridge pickup was a sketchy diy installed filtertron. Currently it has vintage style gold foil humbucker sized single coils in it and it’s just incredible. These older modern sheratons are something special. They don’t have all the new epiphone stuff and I personally think they’ve got just a real “feel” to them that I’ve never again experienced with an epiphone. I got my dream natural casino standard a few years ago and I just always get pulled back to my ebony beast. With .13s on it, it’s an absolute machine that can do anything. I watched this video just now because it’s across the country and I’m missing it and it’s hard to find a non pro one these days. Great video mate!

Such beautiful playing - you really don't get the credit you should for how mesmerising some of your phrasing is. Bravo for that. I literally just discovered this channel about half an hour ago (was searching for reviews for 335-types and stumbled on your channel after about two hours down the rabbit hole). I've now watched enough of your videos (even if mostly made up of semi-hollows to date, as explained) to notice that the things you play are always bang-on perfect for the guitar you're playing, it really does showcase the strengths of the guitars better than any other review I've ever seen of any guitar anywhere. Full stop. Incidentally, at the start of my search I was 99.5% certain I was only really interested in the Gibson 335 (my heart had spoken), but now I've seen what a D'Angelico, a Casino, a Sheraton and a couple of Gretschs can all *really* do (and again - that is 100% down to how you've perfectly matched the guitar with the perfectly touched notes. I'm truly amazed how much bang for the buck you can get that I hadn't considered. Very, very seriously considering splitting my budget now to immediately get the D'Angelico Premier DC (exactly the one you played so my heart gets a little bit of what it wanted) and also the Casino - I immediately fell in love with it. When I think how long I've lusted after the Gibson, though... can hardly bear it. Now my decision - which was all but made an hour or two ago - has now become incredibly difficult again, so thank's for that. Off to watch some more . How you "only" have

This comment made my day! Thanks for the kind words -- I'm not sure I deserve it, but I'll take it! For what its worth, if you can afford it, I'd go with the 335. Now the reason I say that is not because the other guitars are lacking, all the others you mentioned are quite good. But I can say from experience that if there's a guitar you've been wanting for a long time, that want wont go away by getting another guitar. You'll still find yourself wanting a 335 when all is said and done, no matter how good the others are. I think if you do decide to go the alternate route though, a Casino should definitely be on the list, as it totally does its own thing (same can be said for Gretsch here, but Epiphones are closer to the Gibson sound).

Say bro, I'm new to your channel. I'm a retired pro, 42 years in LA. Blah blah blah...what an amazingly honest take you have on the epi/gibson nonsense. Thank you. I own several of both. Obviously the gibson 335 build wise, is superior. It's not arguable. On the other hand, epi hollow body gtrs have their own thing going on that you can't hang a price tag on. For me the breakdown occurs with the LP model, the drop-off is severe. However, epi has been in the hollow body game for a minute. And it shows. The Sheraton pro 2 is a monster for the $$$. I appreciate your non-hyperbolic style.

@@mariomessina1147 What I really like is that the Antiquities come with either gold or chrome aged covers. I chose the gold because that's what came with the guitar in the first place. I still have the original pick ups and thought about having them re-wired, but I'm now against it because I might lose a pickup one of these days and I won't like the sound. The originals are very weak and sound like crap to me. Oh, and I got mine in a trade with a Y2K telecaster thinline and now I want THAT one back.

That’s cool u wanted to keep the gold pickup covers ! I’m gonna buy a Sheraton in the near future in ebony finish bc I love a Gibson Es 355 and it’s custom appointments but no way will I spend $5,000. The Sheraton is just as good and made with the same wood . Replace the pickups and pots and nut and switch jack and u got an American guitar 😎🎸

Congrats! One would think it's basically a 335 but constructionwise, Sheraton IIs usually have 5 piece necks. They don't have the spruce "bracing" the 335 has, so there's nothing between the centerblock and the top/back but the fit is pretty tight. Also Sheratons don't have the kerfing around the perimeter like a 335 (or all acoustic guitars) because the sides are thicker than a 335. All this plus the larger headstock (plus more binding!) usually make for a slightly heavier guitar with a bassier(?!) tone, even unplugged. IMHO and IME of course.

Hey, that was a great video. Wonderful playing. I will have to find a way to check out your music. (Not that easy, since I am boycotting Spottyfy) I bought a Sheraton II Pro just by chance 2 months ago...and it became my favorite axe. I was in the shop to try out Epiphone 339's, but they did not create any kind of resonance in me. Just when I was about to leave the shop, I saw the Sheraton, and thought: "let's give it a try". Love at first sight. In my Line6 I created a setting that fit to the guitar best, in my humble opinion. A Fender Princeton, a King of Tone boost to tighten the sound, and for solos the King is stacked with an additional Zen boost. That's it. What I like about the Sheraton is, that you can control the gain very beautifully and precise with the volume knobs. Conclusion: an absolutelly versatile and sweet sounding axe.

I had a Sheraton half a decade ago, and I miss it today. Thinking of getting another one in natural. Much as I would love a full-blown Gibson ES-335, the Sheraton almost has a deeper classic vibe than the 335, when you consider how the art of the f-hole/archtop guitar is something which Gibson had to learn from Epiphone, not just purchase. I felt that when I had my earlier one. If I do get another one, having “played the game“ with the Epiphone version of the 335, I’m not going to go for the pro edition. The coil tapping is overrated.
@JackFossett5 жыл бұрын
You're very right, Epiphone has a rich heritage that goes far beyond being Gibson's beginner to intermediate brand. In fact, Les Paul designed his solid body guitar in the Epiphone factory a decade before Gibson had any interest. And I also agree about coil tapping -- maybe an unpopular opinion, but I hate coil tapping. It never sounds right, just sound like you suddenly make your humbucker weak and noisy.

Elegant but not gawky. My wine red has the most beautiful polished finish. The finish quality looks like the same type as my made in Japan Yamaha A5M. The 5 piece neck is stable and super strong. The 5 plies are solidly bonded together from the tail to the top of the headstock. This kind of neck construction is extra durable and resists breaking at the notorious weak spot where the neck transitions into the headstock. This reinforced maple neck is mega strong and not nearly as likely as a solid mahogany neck to snap and break. Mahogany is brittle where maple resists stress and cracking. It is a big heavy guitar. There is a quality to the feel and tone that is produced by the strength and mass of the guitar. The guitar looks and feels really good. I have the wine red probucker version, the Sheraton II Pro. It is very enjoyable to play the Sheraton. It has a definitely cool vibe! Without doubt one of the best guitars I have owned in over 50 years of playing. My red Ibanez AS73 was also very cool, but these are 2 quite different guitars. The Sheraton has an elegance of style that I appreciate. Is it worth buying it and installing a push/ pull with some Seymour Duncan’s ? Or better get a pro
@JackFossett5 жыл бұрын
If you really want the push/pull, get the pro. Rewiring hollowbodies can be a pain to do yourself, or techs will charge more for it.

Either are good buys. Ibanez makes nice guitars. Best thing would be to see if any local stores have them that you can try them out beforehand - but honestly you can go wrong either way IMO.

Some polishing products (such as Peek) destroy anodized surfaces, that includes the gold hardware on guitars (it says so on the fine print on teh package). Doesn't feel very good!

Hey Jack... how does the neck size compare to a Casino? I've got small hands so I can't handle the baseball bat necks, but I found the Casino to be playable for me...

I think the neck is pretty comparable. Its a nice medium neck, not too thin but certainly not in baseball bat territory.

@@JackFossett Wonderful... thanks for your videos btw... I've been on the fence between a an Epiphone (Casino or Sheraton) and a Gretsch G2622... they both felt pretty good but I did NOT like the dark Gretsch pickups and would likely replace if I got them. But the Epiphone's are making a strong case... Any thoughts on the Gretsch stuff?
@JackFossett5 жыл бұрын
@@toddthomas4761 So I love Gretsch guitars, but I can't comment as I haven't played the 2622. I've done demos of the 5420 and 5220, both of which have nice brightness, however those are fully hollowbody and solidbody (respectively) so they aren't like the Sheraton.

Hi, Congratulations on the tutorials and your music on KZbin. I respect you very much. I'd like to ask you for advice. I would like to buy a 335-like SEMI-ACOUSTIC GUITAR. I have seen these models that over time I will try. IBANEZ AS93 or AS193. TOKAI UES78 EPIPHONE SHERATON II PRO AGSTROM VIKING 2019 Which of these, in your opinion in order of importance, can approach the sound of the GIBSON335 possibly with a PICK UP change (which ones?) I thank you and always follow you. I wish you and your family HAPPY HOLIDAYS and a NEW YEAR full of health, serenity, many beautiful things and the realization of your dreams, needs and desires. Heyy i have a question, epiphone guitars are suitable for what kind of music? (im new haha)
@JackFossett4 жыл бұрын
Depends on the model. In reality you can basically play any guitar you want for whatever music you want, but some lend themselves to different genres. I.e. this one is great for blues, jazz, country, rock. Not as great for metal.

The pickups definitely sound copy, it's such a shame that manufacturers don't go the extra few dollars and install proper pickups during manufacture thus saving having to pull a new guitar apart to install upgraded pickups ! Kind of a stupid thing to have to do eh ! 🎸😁👍
@JackFossett4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I mean, its all part of keeping the cost down. In order to get a guitar this quality for under $1k, big companies have to limit costs in areas like hardware and pickups. But better to have the great bones of a guitar, because pickups and hardware can be upgraded, whereas wood, finish, and build quality cannot.

@@JackFossett Can't argue with that. Love your vids, btw. You've helped me narrow down the many affordable semi-hollow guitars out there to find which ones would be best for me. I haven't bought or played an Epiphone in years but I just can't shell out the $4k for a Gibson ES-335. I've narrowed it down to either the Sheraton II Pro, or the Ibanez Artcore Expressionist AS93FM. Have you ever played that Ibanez before? If so, how does it compare to the Sheraton? Thanks for the great content.
@JackFossett5 жыл бұрын
STSGuitar16 so I haven’t played the Ibanez, but a buddy of mine has one and loves it. I’m going to try to borrow it for a shootout sometime. I think you probably can’t go wrong either way.

@@JackFossett A shootout between those two guitars would be great, especially since they are basically the same guitar with all the nice gold hardware, inlays, and binding that they both come with (also pretty close in price). Because they are almost identical spec it would really come down to being a comparison between the quality of the mid/higher end guitars of the two different brands themselves. I'd be super interested to see which one comes out on top in that shootout because it is certainly not obvious which one is the better guitar on paper. Thanks for your input.
