Hello! This the first of a set of introductory "primer" videos. Rather than being detailed discussions of a particular technique, with accompanying pdfs, these are meant to provide a general overview, and are an informal attempt at talking about chromaticism, sharing some of the underlying principles.
There is an interesting bit of common ground between what Barry Harris teaches and the concepts shared in Dmitri Tymoczko's "Geometry of Music". In these primer videos, I briefly gloss over some of this, and I'll return to it in later episodes. Tymoczko's geometries give us insight into why Barry's methods work so well, by helping us to visualize chromatic pitch space!
The Labyrinth of Limitations app, for exploring all of these concepts in a fun, educational, and inspiring way, can be found here:

If you feel like these primer vids could use some sort of PDF, please let me know, and I'll do my best to provide anything that helps to clarify things.

Love this stuff man. A lot gets by me, but I am eager to rewatch and try to absorb more. Are these episode (0)s the best place to start with you content. I have some exposure to the Barry Harris stuff, but not a lot. My background is more from classical harmony, than jazz, though I do play a bit of jazz as well. The harmonic possibilities of what you are sharing are amazing. Thanks very much for this stuff.

Cool video. I studied Geometry of Music and years later Barry Harris. I actual asked Mikael if he had knew Barry Harris and he wasn’t fully aware of the depth of the connection. What software is making the teseract?

Hi Joseph. Thanks for your comment. Yes, I reached out to Dmitri (does he go by Mikael?) 12 years ago and asked him, but he wasn't aware of who Barry was at the time. I also had a fun phone chat with Barry about this tesseract, which he wasn't aware of, while, at the same time being incredibly familiar with it. My work, which I'm preparing for submissions for publications, thoroughly explores these connections, while also following implied pathways into new areas (and codifying an algorithmic approach to the particular geometry of the guitar fretboard). The software is mine, and is available through a link in the video description:) It's been a rather large independent post-doctoral research project I've been immersed in since 2010.

The screen mentions confusion. -At 6:43, you say - played C Half Dim, because that is the same as Em6 -You are playing C# Half Dim, which is indeed the same as Em6. The notes are right. Also, on the substance. At 0:59 you give the original chord as C#min. But at 6:43 you are playing some type of C#min(b5) here because it is the same as Em6? Again, it seems the chords are fine, but the explanation is not. ----- Skipping past the confusion to 6:57. A main idea here is that the same 1 diminished passing chord is used in the Scales of Chords of four Dom 7 chords a minor third apart (expressed as a min6 chord rooted on he fifth degree of the Dom chord, so called 6 on V). So, to simplify, use a G7 environment, and line DEF. Under the D, there Dm6, under the E is E dim., and under the F - any of the family. Right?
@TheLabyrinthofLimitations
@TheLabyrinthofLimitations 3 жыл бұрын
well, I was being pretty confusing at 6:57. . . I've been a teacher for a long time, but I never made improvisatory instructional videos until beginning this channel, so there's been a learning curve. At this point of the video, I'm playing a iiø-V-I in B minor. This gives C#min7b5-F#7-Bminor, which is viewed as E minor 6 to G minor 6 (the "tritone's minor for F#7) to B minor 6. That's what's happening here. Because E minor 6 and G minor 6 are "family" (i.e. related by minor 3rds), the same diminished chord is used as the "off" chord in both of these scales of chords

@@TheLabyrinthofLimitations I know you are improvising the lesson as well as the music. It is extremely difficult to play what you are playing., because it is, first, extremely difficult to think what you are thinking. And then you have to talk at the same time? Yikes.
