Therianthropy or Therianthropes is the general or umbrella term for a person who can transform into an animal or hybrid form. Lycanthropy is wolf specific. I don't know the term for other specific animals.

@ISTDpod I think the best reference I can think of is an old school video game series called Bloody Roar. From what I can remember of the game, only type of animals are mammals. Not sure if that was a choice on the game's part or if Therianthropes from a real world lore stand point are only mammals too.

@ that’s fascinating! And there’s a really interesting conversation here about how cultural myth gets introduced, accepted, admired, appropriated, adapted and risks getting forgotten in our culture. D&D as a game is such a sandbox of joyfully riffing on ANY concept, especially tropey ones like werewolves and vampires. I personally don’t feel like I wish they’d define an origin from the various colorful possibilities you outlined. Chances are, a DM will change and simplify to make it fit their world lore anyway (as we have). But is it worthy to talk about? 100%! And I hope we aren’t seeming disrespectful. So glad you like the show ♥️ hope to see you in a couple weeks when season 2 starts!
