Watching a few videos with Lake Speed Jn lately, always very interesting but probably need to be watching them at a better time of the day when my brain can absorb that info😂

Brilliant. Have started to watch quite a bit of Lake Speed lately, and really like the way he explains things. Similar to Simon Crafer for MotoGP.

Thank you Rafe and Lake for this wonderful session. No doubt piston rings are essential part of an engine as the are the main reasons of cylinder wear, scuffing and scoring. I have experienced a lot of cylinder accidents that were caused due to broken rings and rings were broken due to carbon deposits in the grooves which limit the rings movement as Lake has explained. I have few questions below. 1) What role the position of rings can play i.e. If the top ring is moved closer to the piston crown. 2) What is the performance of DLC coatings now a days? 3) please discuss metallurgical and tribological aspects of piston such as steel piston in natural gas engines. Thank you 😊

Your first two questions are highly covered on the net already. The third is also covered slightly on the internet, and I don't believe this channel is about the metallurgy. There are some threads talking of steel pistons in diesel engines and the challenges; clearances, thermal conductivity and friction welding.

24:55, lol. Really enjoying this. Thought about making my own piston rings, will see how easy it is. With regards to stainless steel being used for the liner and rings and even pistons, I have wondered why this is not more common. The only reason I have found so far is the cost, mass production tries to save as much money as possible. With regards to aircraft engines, one of the largest issues with the engines is corrosion from irregular usage. I have read of the usage of stainless steel as opposed to ductile iron for liners in the performance area, so some people are doing it. I have designed a steel piston that has not been used yet from my knowledge, hopefully can patent it and sell to Mahle. Steel pistons are better than alloy in so many ways, once again cost negates the use of them.

amazing! it is common opinion in case of blow-by and oil consumption to increase the viscosity of the lubricant, it is very useful to know that instead it can be the opposite! I work on Ducati and the models from 2015 onwards have many blow-by and oil consumption problems, Ducati uses 15w50 oil on all the bikes, disassembling cylinders and pistons everything is ok ... I will try to use a 10w40!

please ,explain the correlation and differencess between additive based on Teflon for diesel and petrol engines, how effective are cerflon based ?
@chippyjohn12 жыл бұрын
It's a quite a contradiction to the old, if you have worn rings, use a higher viscosity oil.

Lake Jr., thanks for mentioning that your father was a World Karting Champion! The American associations never give him that distinction.
