Interesting. I can understand the use of epoxy. But suspect the inclusion of glass does nothing, in fact may make it slightly worse. The ferrocement base is more than stable enough to take just epoxy. Especially if well prepared, which they seem to have done. Maybe milled glassfibre or similar used with the silica for thickening. That way any possible future issues will be localised

If you wish to increase pot life on paint or fiberglass resins put the a and B parts in a refridgerator it really helps in high heat times.

Iam a fiberglass boat builder of trade. Note the most inportent thing when working on fiberglass is getting out all the trapped air.using the steelroller until you get a hard dry sound.

looking forward to more content. What model /make of boat is it? When was it originally cold cast?

Did this. Completely self-engineered heavy CSM and west system, no reference or advice. 35 y o hull on the hard, sandblasted, dried for at least 3 years. SCREAMING FRUSTRATION when rusty salt water bled through matrix within 3 months! First haulout 12 mo after launching quite a few blisters. Subsequent owner removed all, not adhered at all in some sections. 🤨 Just my experience. Remnants of tar epoxy after sandblsting, that's what I blamed.

I’m a little late for the party . But that’s a nice barrier coat . Who cares if you have to sand blast the fiberglass later . You’d have to blast off 7 coats of just west systems if you used that alone for a barrier coat the next time the bottom is barrier coated . That shit is like sanding steel . Nice job I bet it will last longer than just epoxy.. it’s been two year have you pulled out .

What is the purpose of putting fiberglas over a ferrocement hull?
@boat_24-73 жыл бұрын
The epoxy coating is need to waterproof the hull, and we had a few spots where the steel reinforcement in the hull was exposed after grinding of all the old paint and epoxy. This needed to be covered, so we decided that the best way to insure this was to put one layer of 300 gram bx in to the epoxy coat,
@robertcooke17743 жыл бұрын
@@boat_24-7 absolute nonsense,if its not waterproof it wasnt cured properly. epoxy wont stick to concrete for long .if your grinding off old epoxy you have a badly built hull .i can see how unfair your hull is, a well built hull will be as fair as any boat. small rust spots are just bad tying ,not too much of a problem.the fairing your doing should not be neccesary if professional plasterers worked on your hull.
