Fine work, and a great example of how much more goes into editing than the average popcorn muncher probably realizes.

As a long time Star Wars watcher, this is incredible to me. Given that Lucas' best known direction is "faster and more intense", its mind blowing how plodding this scene was. It almost feels like it was meant to be more similar to a submarine chase than a dogfight, but it really doesnt hit that mark either.
@JoyofEditing14 күн бұрын
When I recut the whole Saga, I was amazed at how many scenes in the prequels were not as "Fast" and "Intense" as they could be. Your submarine analogy made me laugh! It's dead on!

I think looking at these sequences in the context of the pacing of films in that time period is also important, blockbusters have quicker pacing now than they did back then anyways. I remmbere noticing that greatly when The Force Awakesn came out and noting that at the time it felt like the quickest Star Wars film

I get this and don't necessarily disagree from an editing perspective. But those shots are beloved by all "Firespray" lovers (the whole sequence is). These moments _make_ Star Wars and for that reason _are_ necessary. Move/alter them if you have to but pacing and tone be damned if it means deleting dope shots. Star Wars, truthfully, really isn't much without the dope shots. Spectacle is primary, even for it's own sake. All opinion, likely all mine. Good vid, appreciate the take. Subbed.

I love this! And I'm gonna warn you that in forthcoming episodes, a lot of iconic SFX shots are gonna be left on the cutting room floor, and it hurts me to do it every time! . . . PS - The Firespray is arguably the best design in all of STAR WARS.

awesome and much better. i agree with near every decision... except combining the seismic charges, that one hurt a little. i like the air and the silence in between and that would suit the restructuring of slower bomb deployment/toying with/flexing on obi wan. the cutting interrupts the sound of the explosion a little
@JoyofEditing5 күн бұрын
This is an excellent point! You're absolutely right that the sound of the charges is less epic if the charges are combined. The main benefit of combining the two charges is that it greatly increases the perceived velocity of Obi-Wan's starfighter leading into the section where Jango fires on him. In the end I decided that the increased intensity of the action, was much more important to the overall flow of the sequence than the resulting loss of audio excellence. Whenever you make a change something is gained and something is lost, and I think your argument is more than valid :).
@nvna11113 күн бұрын
@ oh good points true! & sorry for saying it hurt that was so dramatic of me. I just love the seismic charges and the beats of that moment . I know! I reckon one day ILM will re-render the prequels' CGI elements in HDR for STAR WARS' 50th anniversary or something. . . but until then, a quick tweak of the levels and a slight gold tint does the trick pretty well.

I'm hoping for proper re-releases now that Sony has taken over home media distribution for Disney (Disney Movie Club is closed). This could also coincide with the 50th. I just started a 4K collection this year and suddenly (since Christmas) the US 4K version of A New Hope seems OOP. Amazon/Walmart/Target are all currently out-of-stock and scalper prices are bumping $100/copy. Of course, this could change. I did notice a similar drop in stock last year and then suddenly all was restocked after a few months. But yeah, hopefully Sony has some goodness in the pipeline. Personally, I'd _love_ to see them give rights to Criterion. A New Hope at least deserves a Criterion release.

Cool video! However, I don't think the comparison to Empire Strikes Back is one to one. The reason Han needs to wait is because he can only detach when the Star Destroyer dumps the garbage before it jumps to hyperspace. Once Jango Fett lands on Geonosis, Obi-Wan is free to leave without being seen. He doesn't necessarily have to wait. As far as Jango is concerned Obi-Wan is dead. The Empire on the other hand is still looking for Han. I get your argument from an act break perspective though.

Yep, I was only talking from an act break/pacing perspective. You're correct that the scenarios are not literally one-to-one.

I understand your point of view, but I believe you have misunderstood the point of the chase scene in the asteroid belt. Jango Fett was precisely playing with Obi-Wan the entire time. There was never any genuine intention on his part to kill him. The goal was not to kill Obi-Wan, but rather to ensure that the Jedi discovered both Kamino and Geonosis. If they had not first uncovered the Clone Army and then the Droid Army, there would have been no Clone Wars. Palpatine’s plan relied precisely on the Jedi discovering both armies. Jango was not trying to kill Obi-Wan to prevent him from uncovering the plans of the Separatists; he was leading him to Geonosis while simultaneously giving him the impression that he was trying to kill him. Obi-Wan - and by extension, the Jedi - had to find both the Clones and the Droids; otherwise, there would have been no war. And without the war, Palpatine would have had no opportunity to exploit the conflict and consolidate his power. Without the war, there would be no Empire. Therefore, it was essential that the Jedi uncovered both armies. For this reason, it is completely logical for the scene to give you the impression that Jango was merely playing with Obi-Wan, because that is exactly what he was doing. Apart from this, I agree with all of your other points, and indeed, I too believe that Anakin arriving on Tatooine and finding his mother should come before Obi-Wan emerging from behind the asteroid, landing on Geonosis, and uncovering the Separatist plans.
@Concreteowl2 күн бұрын
You are talking about the guy who came up with the rescue of Han from Jabba scenario and I defy you to make any sense of that plan as shown. If Fett was playing with Kenobi why have him smugly declare to his kid that he was going to finish him off and had finished him off? If Fett is playing with Kenobi and leading him into a trap cut those interactions instead and you will get something more like the Falcon, "escaping" the Death Star.
@spartacus9362 күн бұрын
@@Concreteowl Your criticism of Jango Fett’s behavior comes from a misunderstanding of his role in Palpatine’s larger plan. The key difference between Jango's actions in the asteroid belt and the Falcon's "escape" from the Death Star lies in their purpose. In the case of the Falcon, the Empire intentionally let the heroes escape to track them to their base. With Jango, his orders were not about trapping Obi-Wan, but ensuring that the Jedi continued to follow the trail that would lead them to Geonosis. When Jango tells Boba that he is going to "finish off" Obi-Wan, it is not a reflection of his true goal, but a way to appear confident in front of his son. Palpatine’s entire scheme depended on deception. The Jedi had to believe they were uncovering the Clone Army and the Droid Army through their own investigations. Jango’s role was to create the illusion of resistance, while ultimately guiding Obi-Wan to the next step in the plan. His behavior is consistent with that of a bounty hunter who wants to appear in control, especially in front of his son, even though killing Obi-Wan was never the actual objective.
@JoyofEditing2 күн бұрын
My thinking was that Palpatine/Count Dooku are the only folks who know that this whole scenario is a ruse to start a war. Jango (like the Geonosians and the Trade Federation) really think the Separatist's Cause is the point (Though Jango's probably only in it for the money). From Palpatine's POV it doesn't matter if Obi-Wan gets killed chasing Jango, because if he does the Jedi/Republic will go looking for him and the end game of the war starting is the same :).
