There's a family, all with different stories and last names. It's a new type of family called a "group home" where they can stay until their original family is restored. The woman who runs this group home is called "mom" by the children. She's not just a mom in name only, she's their another "real mother".

I’m glad they let the oldest son stay with them past 18 because it can be hard to get a footing on life for older foster kids without that support.

The legal age of being an adult in Korea is 21 so by law he’s still a minor I think.

This was made before the Korean age change. You are 1 at birth. And then at lunar new year you eat a bowl of rice cake soup and get a year older collectively with every one else. Adult is basically leaving high school and entering college, or old enough to do that. School year begins in March. After both Solar and Lunar Year. Lunar New Changes every year. They just switched over months ago to western age system. This was made before. I saw it on tv some time ago. @@solaris5922

this is how a group home as they say should be .the woman they call umma shes sooo lovely i see her heart and how much she loves and cares for the children also Eojin even the aunties their hearts are beautiful if only this is how it is in the west but so many stories of kids treated horribly and worse, the kids are all happy and feel safe and loved and appreciated here .this is what family really is. people who love each other and look out for each other and love in a home even if not by blood but you can feel a sense of belonging .all the best to them alll....this was so wholesome to watch. i really appreciated this episode:)

Please don’t invoke the west when none is needed. You needlessly compare whole belief systems based off an anecdote and that doesn’t do anything for any nation. Have you not heard of countless of stories of amazing orphanage homes or people taking in kids as their own other than in Korea? Have you not heard of horrible orphanage homes in Korea? That’s why you shouldn’t do what you did. Why can’t you just praise a video and the content without needlessly dragging another group down just to raise another group? Why did you think that was required?? Korea and the west both have issues with their orphans, and most likely the west does it better in totality when it comes to the socioeconomic issues compared to Korea.

Just to put it into context, some if not within my top 10 stories I’ve heard on child abuse are from Asia, hands down. But what does that have to do with praising a video about an amazing family running an orphanage?? Absolutely nothing, stay humble.

are you serious did you not watch the same video we all did or read my comment ,noone else was willing to take those kids in from their broken enviroments/childhood she stepped in and did her part plus the aunties thats something to commend she is humble too cause shes not boasting her ego shes just showing what shes doing from her heart so you have completely missed the whole point of the story, i dont understand people when they see someone doing something good to help others especially kids they say stay humble or have to be negative do you not see whats happening in the world we could do with more kindness and positivity too. do you not see in the west as i said again how they treat children reading comprehension too you need to apply. maybe try and focus on the good people do then project your own views. @@henrytep8884

@@jasmineuelese730 ok this happens all over the world, so why did you have to drag down the western culture to raise up this family?? Why engage in that petty exchange?? Yeah you’re the petty person who called out the entire western culture 😂. You should have kept your comments to the family, instead you needed to compare the west in your op to this anecdote for some reason. Maybe English isn’t your first language and you’re not understanding my point. Why did you need to invoke western culture as if they don’t do exactly what this family does sometimes? No County is perfect, no culture is perfect, so please don’t essentialize a whole civilization because another civilization has one family that does good one time. And yes of course I watched the video. It was heart warming and loving and sweet. Coming from a family of 6 brothers and living in a similar condition growing up, also very real.

They worked say and night and hid their struggles well so that we could have. Astress free life as children, but we grew up aware of their struggles and appreciate it, hopefully i will be the 3rd to graduate next summer from university and mu aim to to make lots of money, not for myslef but for my family so we can never worry about buying anything ever again. Asian parents support their child till they fully become independent, usually they just want them to stay together if possible and surely this group home is doing the same supporting them till the end. This reminds me so much of like old school boarding house style. We would have an aunt who lives in the house with us, in Indonesia, and we pay rent for everything like electricity bills, water and food she provide for our 3x a day meal. Nowadays we dont have such aunts who stays in the house. It is unfortunate. This was nice to see, to see it stil practiced in Korea.❤

1- it's pretty atypical for someone over 18 (past high school) to still be in this type of housing 2- these places get government funding 3- a bit inefficient. Most of the homes are bigger. Allows for a better economies of scale 4- Orphanages / group homes are privately owned. Some use the money better than others for the kids
@kristinesharp6286
@kristinesharp6286 6 ай бұрын
A group home is more efficient than orphanage. Not all are gov funded some are charities particularly faith based with little to no funding from government sources. It would be nicer for kids to be in pairs of 2’s inside these mother’s own houses. But if there is a chance for the kids to return to their families a group home ideal. They do not stand out living in an ordinary apartment. Korean has a stigma against orphans. Course a stigma against villas too. Course a stigma for single mothers. Still when they come home from school other kids won’t see them enter the grounds of an orphanage but a typical residence. Lots of orphanages are closing as more retirement type homes needed. I noticed most the kids in the group home are not the same age. There is a lot of competition in orphanage among same age children for resources and attention. Lots of people taking what is yours. A small group of kids in a house with a some adults looking over them seems ideal. I adopted from China a 1 year old. They cared for him well. But if I were to compare this group home set up to an orphanage I would think the group home set up being preferred. We had to do some classes ahead of adoption and a lot was on orphanage care and effects, etc… America has kids in foster care and kids in group homes. I don’t think we have any official orphanages anymore, some institution types for some extreme medical needs. Korea has become more affluent. They stopped sending as many kids for international adoption. I think some domestic adoption picked up. I think more kids in state care than 10 years ago still.
@HKim0072
@HKim0072 6 ай бұрын
@@kristinesharp6286 I highly doubt that any organization (charity or private) is not taking the government stipend per kid. Everything you mentioned above is applicable to a smaller home as well. Just way less efficiency of resources. If orphanages in Korea are closing, it's because of less kids, not because of old people. Zero chance you can convert the buildings to a retirement home without a boatload of cash. Korea's orphanages are a combination of foster care (kids with parents) and orphanages (kids without parents).
@kristinesharp6286
@kristinesharp6286 6 ай бұрын
The government has never entirely cared for most orphans in Korea. There is the minister who continues with the baby box. The are the Buddhist monks who take in scores of children. There are the Catholic Churches, the Salvation Army, etc… These organization use their own money for buildings and might get some government money for day to day expenses. They are not going to build more retirement homes when they can convert almost empty orphanage and empty schools. Then they move the orphans to group homes. It takes more to heat the orphanage than a typical size apartment. There is a reason international adoption had been the fashion from 1950’s until the 2010’s. Foreign donations, foreign entities funding a great deal for the orphans left behind. These agencies like Holt have charitable entities as well. Holt in the 50’s and Holt 40 years later and today are very different. @@HKim0072

@@kristinesharp6286 Wait, so you are talking about this without actually knowing how the orphan system works in Korea?
@kristinesharp6286

We applied for adoption about 20 years ago. We didn’t pick Korea we picked China. We researched them all. In the US this is not a taboo topic. This is not the first ‘doc’ about this topic as well. Both countries share the same issue. Most the kids in both systems have a living parent or grandparent. You realize adoption has changed over time as care of children in care of by the state or NGO’s. Right? My sons orphanage or Children’s institute had turned in a palliative care place for children. I certainly can have my opinion that group home or foster care is better than institutionalized care. My child spent a year at a child welfare institute abroad. The behaviors and adjustment and concerns after is different coming from group home, foster care and institution. Would you rather lose your family at 5 and go to an orphanage or group home?@@HKim0072
