I just found your channel and love it. I am lucky enough to live in America and traveled to Boulder, Colorado from Michigan a few years ago to visit my son. Part of my visit was a tour of the Schacht factory in Boulder. I received a personal tour and was treated with the utmost respect. I also own a Matchless that I will never part with. Thank you for all the wonderful comments about this fantastic family run, quality organization!

I bought my first wheel to learn to spin , a Matchless, after watching your podcast. Thank you. Now, you have to teach me how to use it….

I agree about the school exercise system. I believe it’s designed to teach “competitiveness” which I run from at any opportunity. I too had to relearn what healthy exercise is and found out there is a ton of fun stuff that doesn’t involve “failure” if you don’t perform better than your peers.

I know this is an older episode, but I just had to say how glad I am to have stumbled upon your channel and this episode with your Schacht review (thank you)! Having just bought my first spinning wheel, being this exact Schacht Matchless model (we found used/beautifully restored at an event here called Mother Earth News Fair), I was very excited! And now even more so seeing that it appears to really have been an excellent choice!

Oh wow! I love it when serendipity steps in! It did that with my Matchless as well. :) Congratulations on your new wheel and thank you so much for your comment - I'm glad you found it useful. Happy Matchless spinning!

Look at all that beautiful projects you have made and all that gorgeous projects that are 'to do - wish list - to be made' - there is your mojo :-) I do enjoy your podcast and would love to see more and more. I'm a beginner on hand-spinning, practicing on my Ashford Joy2 and totally love, could say I have become addicted to wool, yarn, knitting :D Good luck with new house!

Thank you so much for your encouragement Evita - there's definitely mojo to be found in project planning. So many beautiful patterns out there! And congratulations on your Ashford Joy 2 - welcome to the addiction!

Another lovely episode. Your colour choices match my taste so all your projects appeal to me. I was gifted a spinning wheel for Christmas and find your information really helpful. I know your mojo will return, just remember not to put pressure on yourself. From my point of view, I come to you tube to watch podcasts and appreciate your time and effort but in no way expect more than the podcaster has time for. Thank you. X

Any time you upload a video it is a treat!! So glad to see this one and I completely understand how mojo can appear and disappear without warning. You make an excellent show but please don't feel pressure from us to keep up a production schedule. That could make it even harder to get that mojo back. Deadlines always start to feel oppressive to me. Just know that you are inspiring and you make great content. Thank you!

I’m going to Purlescence! I live just an hour from Sunnyvale. I’ve be eyeing the Schacht spinning wheels for quite a while now. Thanks so much for the info…. 🧶☺️

It’s a wonderful part of the world you live in! I’m not sure Purlescence actually exists any more unfortunately. Their website is still there and there’s a phone number but Yelp says it’s closed and there are no reviews since 2015. Worth calling to check before you travel!

Lovely podcast once again! Glad to see you're recovering from your sore foot too. I do love that green and blue singles you've spun, they seem to be the colours I gravitate towards just now! Definitely like hearing about your life at the end too, it feels much more like I'm listening to a friend talking about spinning and what's going on then :-) (P.S. my eldest son said he loves the orange electric spinning wheel and mummy should get one too! Husband isn't so happy with that, but it's the kid that's wanting it so.... Haha!) :-D

Hi Kirsty, thanks so much for your comment - glad you enjoyed the 'life stuff'. I completely gravitate towards greens and blues and often have to consciously steer away from them just for a bit of variety otherwise I'd be camouflaged in all the bluey-greenness! Your son clearly has great taste! Hard to argue with that... and useful to have some kid leverage to use against the husband! 😄😉

What does kemp/kempy mean in relation to spinning & yarn please? It's Sept 2024, I got my 1st wheel back in July (so am still very much a newbie at all this!) - I found your podcasts & really enjoy your presenting style & SOH so went back to the very beginning to catch up on everything, 7 years worth should keep me out of trouble for a while 😅 - thank you for all the time & effort you put into your podcasts, very much appreciated, Robin

Thanks for your comment, Robin - I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos. Kemp is the name for the short, coarse, wiry fibres that appear in some fleeces (some more than others!) It’s usually quite brittle and doesn’t take dye.

Just watched your review of the Matchless and I am wondering what the date of manufacture was?? I am about to purchase one and just want to make sure it doesn’t have the cracking wood on the wheel. Thank you. I enjoy your videos ❤️😊 SusanO.
@TinyFibreStudio3 ай бұрын
Mine was built on 13th July 2012. Not all of them had this issue and it wasn’t a problem with the wood actually cracking/breaking but the gaps in the drive wheel being bigger than they should have been. They were fine when they left Schacht but the wood contracted due to differences in humidity between Colorado and their new homes. I’m pretty sure any that had that issue were recalled and fixed under warranty. The drive wheel was then redesigned with two pegs at each joint (as you see on my wheel). If it has the pegs it was made after they had this issue. But keep in mind that wood expands and contracts all the time with changes in humidity, so any wheel with a multi-part drive wheel can have slight gaps. As long as the construction is sound, it doesn’t impact the spinning. Hope that helps! 🧶❤️
@TinyFibreStudio3 ай бұрын
Did some more digging: the first mention I can find of it is on Ravelry in July 2011 reporting the problem on a May 2011 wheel. By January 2012 they’d modified the design to include the pegs. User NinjaBex asked Schacht about it and they said something along the lines of: ‘small gaps can appear on some wheels with changes in climate conditions as the amount of water in the environment (and thus in the wood) changes. Normally the gaps that form in these situations are small and close up again when the weather changes again. Small gaps like this should not affect the performance or stability of your wheel.’ You’ll often see similar gaps on other drive wheels constructed from multiple pieces - it’s really nothing to worry about.

@@TinyFibreStudio Wow. Thank you so much. The Matchless that I am considering was manufactured in 2019. So I should be good. Thank you for such a fast response. 😊❤️😊. SusanO.

Today in 2021 almost 2022 the Matchless is $1,380.00 USD.. You got a fantastic deal.
@TinyFibreStudio3 жыл бұрын
I certainly did. Even in 2013 it was a ridiculously good deal. I did check the seller was really happy to let it go at that price. It was one of a batch which had to have replacement drive wheels, so she’d got a great deal on it herself and just wanted it to go to a good home.
