Nice tour. I have a Dwarf Burning Bush Bonsai I made 1.5 years ago. Not too bad besides the back budding. I overwintered it last year in the ground in a Iowa winter. So it should be cold hardy. Any suggestions for pruning before I over-winter it this coming winter? My plans is to take it out of the ceramic pot and put in a plastic trainer pot and dig a hole, put a layer of rock at the bottom and put the pot in the ground and backfill the sides with dirt. Also, yesterday I got a 3 trunk Ficus Benjamina Variegated. So I have been watching you videos about your clump style.
@MaybeBonsai2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Josh, I overwinter my burning bush in the garage but it is 100% cold hardy. Label says to -30+ Celsius, I usually prune in the middle of the summer so the wounds heal a bit before going dormant. I don’t think you will have any issues pruning it now and overwinter by burying is a good idea, as long as there are no rabbits around. Also, congrats in your ficus, the variegated ones are cool in my opinion 👍
@joshturner51652 жыл бұрын
I have wondered about garage overwinter. Do the trees need to be watered at all? Or have light from a window? Thanks for sharing knowledge with me🤝🌱🌿❤️
@MaybeBonsai2 жыл бұрын
@@joshturner5165 My garage is south facing so it hovers around 0-8 celsius. It gets some indirect sun but usually deciduous trees do not need light while dormant but they do need water. Not too much water since the roots are inactive. Your soil actually does not dry out that fast because the roots are not sucking up water. Check your soil everyday to see if they are dry or not and after a week or two you will have an idea how often you need to water.
@growclipbonsaiforseniors19512 жыл бұрын
Have you checked for root knot nematodes, the bad ones that eat roots on that one Maple? You can tell if the roots have knot like sections. Just a thought.
@MaybeBonsai2 жыл бұрын
Didn’t see any bugs yet as I am not sure if the tree is dead or not. I will give it a week or two to see if it just dried out due to bad watering. The tree is near the side of the pot so maybe I missed that area

Try beneficial nematodes to get rid of the larvae in the fall & spring in your soil for the beetles. Try searching your organic sources for them.
@MaybeBonsai2 жыл бұрын
These beetles just came recently, they are attracted to these grape looking vines. I removed my grapes before because of these annoying beetles

It sounds so strange hearing you call English ivy a house plant. Over here (England), it is as hardy as it could be and almost impossible to kill
@MaybeBonsai2 жыл бұрын
You are right, they are most likely hardy, I just never left them outside before lol
@gayefanner7312 жыл бұрын
btw Xin you could definitely leave the ivy out overwinter, I’ve never known one killed by cold, in fact they’re pretty bombproof I’d say! Oh I bought a PA varieg. tother day, 5inches high! All I could get, sigh!🤷🏼♀️
@MaybeBonsai2 жыл бұрын
Oh the ivy I bring in because it is almost maint free lol congrats on the PA, it will grow at a decent rate and it will create a lot or cuttings when you prune it haha
