Fantastic Rose video Terry! Growing up a Dodger fan he was never my favorite player but you had to respect the way he played. Similar to what you said in the video as a kid my dad and my coaches always pointed Rose out as a player to emulate in regards to his hustle and drive. A player at any skill level can get the most out of their ability if they play with his desire. I really believe he was the key cog to the Big Red Machine teams and should have been inducted to the Hall of Fame while he was living. Rose has some amazing cards, his 64-75 run are some of my favorites. What a fantastic run you have, I have a lot of his cards and watching this made me want to grade them. Looking at his profiles at the end was cool. Love that Burger King card with him on the Phillies. Well done my friend, have a great week!

Thanks, Steve! I’m particularly proud of my 1964 to 1987 Topps Pete Rose run. It wasn’t an easy set to complete, given how many cards he has, and of course, his '60s cards aren’t cheap. The '72 is one of the first cards I acquired when I returned to the hobby over 25 years ago. I think I paid about $15 for it. Haha. Times have definitely changed! That card holds extra special meaning to me because I’ve had it for so long. Pete Rose is the reason I taught my oldest son to run to first base on a walk-hustle, hustle, hustle. You’ll also get on base a few times a year on errors because some fielders rush their throws when they see a runner charging toward the base. I’ve seen it happen over and over. Rose was the modern-day Ty Cobb, squeezing every ounce of talent he had and demonstrating an incredible mind for the game. I completely agree with you-he was the key cog in the Reds' machine and the driving force behind the Phillies' 1980 championship. I enjoyed seeing some of your Rose cards in your video today. Take care!

I just finished watching the Johnny Bench documentary and seeing Pete and the Big Red Machine in their primes doing what they did was incredible. One thing you can definitely teach is hustle and he defined that on the baseball field no doubt about it! His 1965 Topps card is my favorite of his.... its just beautiful! Enjoyed this Terry as always. Have a great weekend my friend!

Thanks Josh. Love Johnny Bench too. One of those special teams in baseball history. Yes, hustle is a big thing with me as well as keeping your composure. I try to set that example with the latter as a coach. That group of 1960s Rose cards are all so nice to look at. It is cool it shoes him batting right and left handed. I like the 65 design because it is colorful and has the logos. The Rose is a beautiful card, but I have always been drawn to the 64. Based on nostalgia, the 80 Topps is one of those images that brings me back because I remember pulling it out of a pack. Though, it is not one of my favorite cards for overall eye appeal. As collectors, our cards bring appeal to us in different ways. You have a great weekend too brother! God Bless, Terry

My favorite player. His hitting streak in 1978 made me a fan of his as well as baseball. I watched baseball in 1977 but 1978 was the year I really started to love it, in large part because of Pete. He is also one of the greatest story tellers ever! A search on youtube for some of his interviews is well worth the time. His rookie has never appealed to me either. The 1978 Topps brings back memories. I remember trading comic books for cards with a neighborhood friend and his 78 Rose was one of the first I zeroed in on. Thanks for sharing Terry!

I appreciate it, Chris. He is a good choice for a favorite player. There wasn’t a hotter player in baseball in 78 with that 44 game hitting streak going on. I always thought the picture on his 79 Topps is a hit from that streak. Of course, I don’t know that, but that is what I thought when I was a kid. The things that run through our minds. I agree that Rose is a good interview. He isn’t afraid to say what is on his mind which draws you in. I agree he tells good stories from his playing days too. I was a big comic book fan as a kid too. Would have been tough to trade comics for cards. It depends on which comics and cards they were. Haha

I like how you broke down and explained many of the images. I believe, however, the 1965 card is actually the then brand new Shea Stadium in the background. Thanks David for sharing about the 65. I assumed most of the 60s Rose cards were spring training photos. Looking at it again that is a pretty nice scoreboard. I will go with you on that one. Especially, given your knowledge on Shea Stadium. The Burger King card is one of my favorites because I never knew it was a different image until I saw it a few years ago. They did the same thing with the Ryan putting him on the Astros in 1980, but it is not as nice of a card. The 77 Burger King Reggie is nicer than the Topps issue. Never knew how Rose got his nickname! When we were kids, Rose was so respected and admired for his style of play. The two memories I have of him that stand out were the 1970 All-Star game when he barreled into Ray Fosse, and the fight he had with Bud Harrelson during the 1973 National League Playoffs. Nice to see a profile on Rose, along with the comments here, that acknowledge his greatness. As you probably know, in many forums and on Facebook posts, if you mention his name you're met with shrill cries of indignity from people who act as though they were personally wronged by him. Pete Rose was one of the greatest players to ever play the game. Btw, I have the 1963 rookie. Got it probably in a response to a Pennysaver ad back in the early 70's. Needless to say, it wasn't too expensive! It's in great shape too. But the 1964 card is a much nicer card really.

Rose is definitely a polarizing figure in the hobby, but Rose the player was special and I am happy to have his cards. Really nice that you have the rookie and that you've had it for so long. Thanks Brian. I put this group together over several years. Really cool to see a quarter of a century of Topps history through one player. I don’t think Pete Rose should be admitted into the hall until he is taken off the MLB ineligible list. In fact, under the current rules he can’t be. I loved him as a player and he should have been a first ballot hall of famer, but he brazenly ignored the rules about betting on baseball. He always said he bet on his own team to win. I have a problem with that because he could make decision not in a players interest to win a game. For example, leaving a pitcher in too long just to win a single game. I don’t think he will ever get in. Shoeless Joe is still waiting. Will see what happens. I do love having his cards in my collection and admire him as a player.
