I studied French literature in the University and I have been an avid reader whole my life. Now when I knit, I feel like knitting takes from my reading and when I read, I feel like reading takes from my knitting :D My job takes time from both my reading and knitting! :D

I really like the color of those socks you're knitting, and I agree it would also make a gorgeous sweater! I've really been obsessed with that muted red-brown color lately. All your baby knits are so cute, and I love the idea of dyeing old onesies to give them a second life.

I agree about PetiteKnit patterns not holding your hand. I usually knit a little at a time at work or while traveling, and I do need detailed instructions to keep my brain on track. That said, I am perfectly happy to create my own line-by-line instructions if I really like a design, as I have for PetiteKnit & Cocoknits patterns. I'm nearly finished with Anker's My Size and I absolutely love it! Thanks for sharing your thoughts & projects :)

Hi Lindsay. I just found you. I live in So. Oregon so most of the summer was smokey. I wore a mask when I went out and then travelled during Sept and part of Oct. and spent the rest of the month getting over some bronchitis. I'm older and usually pretty healthy, so the bronchitis worries me. I prefer the lovely, rainy days of the Oregon I know. I'm trying to get back into knitting, so now that I'm well, I'll enjoy seeing what you're up to. I've always called myself a homebody but, my friends tell me not to say that or I'll only 'attract' people who never want to go out. Not sure what that means. I love fixing up my home, reading, sewing, cooking, knitting, etc. I get out plenty, so there. I'm prepared to move, so if anyone has any ideas about a comfy, area... pass along any info. I love your discussion of your knitting projects and will go back and binge watch your previous video. Thanks for all you talk about. Very comforting. Lynn

Another lovely episode :) Thank you! I have only knit PetiteKnits Oslo hat, but I found this to be short and sweet and without unnecessary hand holding. But where I live, people are used to knit without patterns. It has changed a bit during the last 15 years but before then we even didn't know what a pattern is. We only had so called stitch encyclopedias and when there was a design in magazine, it only gave you the stitch pattern. About soy milk - the proteins from soy adhere to cellulose fibers and make them more protein-fiber-like and because of that the dye can stick to the fiber, that is why it its good for plant fibers.

It is so cozy to follow your podcast. The way Petiteknit write her patterns is very typical Norwegian way to write patterns :) I have bought mitten patterns and got 8 pages, in norway you normally get the hole pattern in 1 page

Yeah, I get the feeling that these giant, in depth patterns started becoming normal because there were so many knitters who were new to the craft. Each pattern seems like it’s catered for beginners, and it seems to have become the standard. Just a guess though. Now that I have some experience, I much prefer the more abbreviated versions.

She is not Norwegian, she is Danish 😊. But it's true that is a traditional way of making patterns in Scandinavia, where it's assumed you can knit and understand.. Helga Isager is difficult, even Danish competent knitters struggle with her patterns.

I've hiked much of the Oregon Coast solo and in college during 5 years I lived in Portland, and I dream of going back all the time. I love your gorgeous knits and how thoughtful you are about everything that goes into them, from the dying to the fiber to the patterns.

Oh, so sorry about the errata for the Aito shawl... that would be disappointing,! thank you for alerting us all, I do have that shawl in my queue to do in the future, and so I appreciate your talking about the issue... I think maybe that particular designer makes errors, I had a hard time figuring out her Betula Shawl because of several errors in the pattern, most of which which were fixed later... that bear sweater is waaay too cute!!! and the yarn you dyed was just perfect for it

Another lovely episode. Just a comment regarding errata and Ravelry - not all designers do an update to their patterns when an error is found; sometimes they only add an errata notification on the main pattern page. (I've discovered this the hard way.) Your finished shawl is still beautiful, even without the garter effect in the lace.

The way petite knit writes her patterns is actually the traditional way to do it in Scandinavia. Most Scandinavian knitting patterns will have very basic instructions, for instance it won't tell you how to do decreases, just that you have to do a specific number of them. This on one hand makes room for doing it your own way, so if you have a favorite way to do it you can do that, but yes it is generally a bit challenging to learn how to knit in Scandinavia unless you specifically choose a beginner pattern :)

Lovely podcast, I always want to knit EVERY gorgeous project you show 😍 Your natural dyeing is so inspirational! I am always so surprised to hear how many errata’s there are for so many different publications! It is the main reason why I will not buy them, and stick to Raverly 😊 I would except top notch tech editing from a publication, especially considering the price of each issue 😲 Have a great week 😘

Reading and knitting at the same time is awesome. I've been doing that for decades - and even though I like audiobooks as well, it goes much faster to read myself. I also agree with you on the narrator part - sometimes the narrator is not the best match for the book! When it comes to pattern writing, scandinavian patterns typically are really short. I haven't knit anything from PetiteKnit myself, but grew up knitting from short patterns. Typically a sweater/cardigan pattern would be about 1/2 page in a magazine + any charts. No handholding - so a lot of trials and errors on my part, since I didn't know any other who knit when I was a teen.
@AWoodenNest
@AWoodenNest 6 жыл бұрын
Nidra777 Yeah, I think as far as my preference, I prefer the abbreviated style of PetiteKnit, but I very much appreciate the extra hand-holding when I’m learning a new technique.

Thanks for pointing that out about the shawl. I saw your last podcast and loved that shawl so much I decided to go buy the stuff to knit it. Then Melody’s podcast popped up and after seeing it I REALLY wanted to make it. Didn’t realize the pattern was getting released to Ravelry the day after her podcast, when I couldn’t find it I went and ordered issue 4 of Laine. So I would have gone down exact same rabbit hole you did. Although I do like reading my patterns off my iPad so I was thinking of going and getting the Ravelry pattern as well but since I had already spent 30.00 for the book 😲 I was having an argument with myself as to whether I should spend more money on the pattern. Yes I will go get the pattern now. Thanks for the heads up 😊

But then when I saw mandarins I liked hers so much too I went and got a gradients brown too! Brother what do I think I’ll do with two. Can’t gift it no one I know is knitworthy they will felt it. Guess I will have two.

Hi Lindsay, I just wanted to let you know that I really love the cozy ambient that you create in your podcast. There isn't a lot of light but it shows everything perfectly, it's quite magical! How do you achieve that?
@AWoodenNest

I think some of the darkness is an illusion due to my black accent wall in the background. ;) I do tend to avoid over-exposure (personal pet peeve, I guess), and record next to an open window so the natural light/shadows can do their thing.

I am actually kind of shocked to hear that people think PetiteKnit's patterns are difficult! I used her, and Klompelompe's patterns to learn how to knit. But I guess that's because I am Norwegian, and we use short patterns and charts, whereas American patterns and others, fill their patterns with a whole novella... I have adhd, so I just can't follow along. Give me a chart any day...
@AWoodenNest
@AWoodenNest 6 жыл бұрын
Emelie Desireè Nordström I agree! I much prefer charts. Sometimes I wonder if we started making knitting patterns so long and in-depth to cater to the beginning knitter crowd since none of us learned in school. Or there weren’t any classes available when i was in school anyway.
@lisbethandersen9394
@lisbethandersen9394 6 жыл бұрын
I think it has a lot to do with tradition. I have only seen her patterns in Danish but they follow the way we usually write pattern here. Many Danes find American patterns to detailed. I kind of like the American way to be honest but it also depends on the project.
