Episode #17 - A Virginia Medal of Honor

The Historical Society of Western Virginia in Roanoke, Virginia operates the O. Winston Link Museum and the Roanoke History Museum and records the history of Roanoke city and county and neighboring counties.
The Historical Society is also the steward for one of the six Medal of Honors that were given to Virginians for actions during the Vietnam War. The Medal of Honor was awarded posthumously to Lt. Gary Lee Miller of Covington, Virginia for saving the lives of his platoon by throwing himself on an enemy grenade.
The Medal of Honor was a finalist for the Virginia Association of Museum's "Top 10 Endangered Artifacts" to receive conservation funding.
Unfortunately, Lt. Miller's Medal did not "win" the contest, but it is still receiving excellent care and undergoing conservation efforts to go on display at the Virginia Museum of History and Culture as part of their new exhibit "Virginia and the Vietnam War" which will open later this year.

Admiral Chester Nimitz said about the Battle of Iwo Jima, 'Uncommon valor was a common virtue'. Lt. Gary Lee Miller personified this by his selfless sacrifice to save his fellow soldiers from the effects of an enemy grenade in Vietnam. Thank you to the Historical Society of Western Virginia in undertaking the restoration of Lt. Miller's Medal of Honor so that future generations can know his story.
