They say “comparison is the thief of joy” and I think that is so true. Especially in the age of the Internet it can be so, so difficult. Finding a balance with influencers/media, etc can be so hard. With all the things I like to affirm by saying “this is enough” and it makes me so grateful and glad.

Well said! I am always amazed by the projects you are able to complete. But my life is different from yours, and we don’t have the same priorities or responsibilities…so expecting to have the same results is comparing apples to oranges. For me personally, I have worked hard to develop the habit of finding joy in another’s accomplishments without comparing it to mine. And I’m happy to say that all that you do brings me a smile and joy!

Oh I love that! It is something that I feel we have to work at to develop that habit of finding the joy and not feeling like we need to compare. It can be a struggle! ❤️

A phrase I use with my students when they compare their speed to another is , 'Embrace your pace, it's not a race'. Not sure where I heard it but it makes so much sense.

I really like the sequence from light to dark on Lilly’s sweater. Dark on the cuffs and bottom won’t show the dirt as easily.

I love the colour fade for Lilly's sweater. I think light to dark is definitely the way to go, for a childs garment. Now I just need to source a UK version of the sock ruler. It looks so handy compared to the wooden one I have.

Thank you so much for this, Kay! So very important to remind ourselves not to compare our own lives to others'. The new format for Summer Sock Camp is a terrific way to put this into practice--no deadlines, no competition, no race to finish "X number" of socks in a summer, no pressure! Love it. Thank you for being YOU, and sharing yourself and your knowledge so warmly and so generously.

I appreciate your soap box speech because my mom died in May, and I've not knit at all until tonight. I've gone so far as avoiding my favorite knitting podcasts and barely acknowledging my stacks of yarn right in my room. I decided tonight that I miss it so much and started catching up on your podcasts while making a sock for my most knit worthy friend. So thank you 💜

Kay, you are blessed to be one of the fastest knitters I’ve ever seen. I remember years ago sitting around the table at The Salty Sheep and having to walk over and stare at you knitting bc I couldn’t believe how fast you knitted. We all have gifts and this is one of yours. I do appreciate you taking time to caution listeners on comparisons. I’m not a fast knitter-I just try to enjoy the journey. I am inspired by your sock productivity. Thanks for sharing.

Love the podcast and get inspiration from your projects and ideas. I love that you are able to finish a lot. More inspiration for us. Enjoy your journey, there is no timeline for our knitting. I love audiobooks. I listen to over 70 per year. I can listen while I do a lot of things - cleaning, cooking, laundry, getting ready in the morning, going for a walk, driving my car. I cannot do anything else that involves words. If I try, my mind mentally blocks out the book. I cannot write notes or cards, pay bills, scroll facebook, online shop, text, etc. If I do, I have to rewind my book. You might be the same.

Great episode as usual. Especially your comments on comparisons. I have always told my students, the only person you can logically compare yourself to is yourself. Comparing yourself to others makes absolutely no sense. I like to say, comparisons are odious (when it comes to those between people). We´re all on different paths, we all come to the table with different situations, skills, and experience, so we need to accept that and gauge the work we do our own dang selves, not look at what others are doing and compare or judge. Love your socks and your spirit!

Really appreciate you speaking in such a healthy way about the temptation to go down the envy/comparison rabbit hole. It leads to nowhere but emptiness! Sometimes it just takes someone like you saying, Stop. No comparison is helpful, ever - to help us snap out of it! I definitely have had to learn this and am happy to say I've really grown in this area - learning that I can just celebrate the beautiful things that others create without feeling like I *have* to pressure myself to make as much and knit all the things in order to feel that joy. I can fully celebrate my own makes be they many or few and be just as thrilled by others' beautiful makes when I let go of that pressure. Not that this is always easy, but man it's freeing the more it's embraced!

I adore hand knitted socks and have worn nothing else since 💕🧦

I can't even believe that people would make negative comments about your project completion totals or the speed at which you knit. What does it say about someone with that kind of envy (hate??) in their heart. I hope you don't take that crap to heart! Delete those comments and block them if you can. Geeze! I find it inspirational. I have picked up SO many good tips and learnings from you, Kay. One of my favorite take aways is the notion of "30 minutes of knitting" concept. Before, I was like - if I can't knit for a long time, why bother? But now -- game changer - little by little (sometimes I only have 10 mins) I get more done and feel good about even smaller accomplishments. (BTW - your hair looks fabulous!) Peace, my friend... 😊

Your sister and niece must be very knit-worthy! You seem to make them quite a few pairs of socks. And a fingering weight sweater! You're such a nice aunt! I'm finally getting started with Summer Sock Camp because my kids are bugging me for new socks 🤪 I was on a dishcloth knitting binge when camp started, but I'm ready to move on to socks now. Oh my gosh the colors in the Scrappy Stripey socks are glorious! I'm a sucker for that combo. I really have to knit myself another pair of those--and some for my daughter too. I've definitely got the scraps-yikes! Such a cute tuck-in-your-bag sock ruler too. Lilly is a lucky little lady to have an auntie that loves to knit for her-that sweater is going to be beautiful. SO glad to hear someone else reads at bedtime. I do every night...it's a routine now. I look forward to my nightly reading time. Whispers in the Wind is one of my favorite patterns of yours-I knit a pair last year and love them. I used to feel bad about not being able to keep up with others as far as knitting...no more! I do what I can and what makes me happy-no pressure, just knit all the things.

Sometimes I get a little... I think the best word would be 'jealous'... that people have so many wips at once. Then I remember that I really cannot work like that. Way back when, at a parents' conference, one of my teachers once told my parents that while my work was good, it would be better if I would work more than one project at a time. I get what they were trying to say - but it would burn me out quickly. My head gets cluttered if I have too many open projects. The feeling of 'I should be finishing that rather than finishing this' overwhelms me. I suppose it doesn't help that there are many areas of my life (now) that don't have a finite end: I'm a musician, so practise is always a thing. I'm the one that does most of the cleaning and cooking chores - and we always need food to eat, clothes to wear and a clean/tidy place to live in. So while I may envy people's ability to have 6 different knitting projects on the go, that's good for them. They can deal with that way better than me. Knitting is my 'I can complete a thing' experience which I otherwise wouldn't necessarily have in my life. ... even if it does sometimes take three or four attempts at a section before I can move on...

Hi Kay. I so agree you can't compare to anyone else. We are all different and have different things going on in our lives and have different expertise with our crafts. It is such a joy to watch your podcasts I am following one of your tutorials on how to knit socks on magic loop. This is my first time knitting socks and I am up to the heel turn. Your tutorial is so clear with directions even though I knit a bit different as I do the throw over with my yarn to knit a stitch where as you do continental knitting. It still works out the same I have tried continental knitting and just can't hold the yarn to get the right tension even though I am a crocheter and have been for many years. I love that you are using all your yarn want to use it all to knit socks. They are all looking lovely. I love the yarn you are going to use for Lily's cardigan and I think you should start with the darkest one first and continue with the other gradients but it is up to you. I so look forward to watching your podcasts. Thank you.

your gift socks using leftovers are really pretty! I wouldn’t worry about what people say, who should know better, about how fast anyone knits. There are things that cause us to knit fast or slow, ie: knitting style, experience and honestly none of that matters. the only thing that matters is that we enjoy the process or finished object ;). I suffer from frequent hand/wrist pain, so I have to take A LOT of breaks, sometimes having to take a whole day or two off of knitting. Because of this I often feel bad that I'm not finishing my projects fast enough, or that I should be working on a project despite my hand pain. But then I stop and remember, "who cares how much you knit in a month??? focus on taking care of yourself so you can still knit when you're 80!!!"

My goodness Kay, I loved your advice about not comparing ourselves to others. Early on in my knitting journey, I was around people that treated our projects as competitions…it got so discouraging that I actually packed all of my knitting away for a year I was just so burned out. Luckily when I went back to it I had a new mindset and was determined not to let that happen again. I had to rewind and listen a second time that you actually said you have had someone request PROOF of YOUR knitting?!?! Lol I had to take a minute to wrap my head around that one. My goodness that is just crazy to me. But thanks for the advice, I hope that if anyone that might be feeling that way realizes sooner than I did that it’s not worth it, knit on and do what makes you happy!! Love the projects too btw and thanks for a great episode!

I don't have any yet, but need at least one, so I'll order two.

I stopped comparing my knitting skill, speed, etc, many, many years ago. Since I retired 2 years ago, I finally decided that the rest of my years will consist of all things that bring me joy. I've never been happier! And, do you have a link for those cute scales you showed? They look so handy and the perfect size. Thank you. I've joined your sock camp KAL. Hoping I can get at least one pair in the FO group. Wish me luck. My 1st KAL ever.

Yikes! Wish I had seen the "slap" sock ruler before I bought the original ones you showed us. 😊

I think both are useful. I have my original one by my knitting spot and I pull it out and use it if I’m sitting there. ❤️

There must be something in the air because I’m in the “use up all the yarn mode” too. 😂

Rotflmao someone wanted you to prove you knit your items yourself? That is so sad. I love your knitting and seeing what you do with your yarn. Thank you for being a knitting inspiration 😊

They are beautiful... how do you handle all the "weave-in's" such that the sock doesn't feel bumpy? I have avoided using different colors/skeins to avoid bumps...

You mentioned in the video that you were doing gifts for socks. When you knit for gifts do you find out the shoe size or just have a standard sock length that works when you knit for a gift?!
