Poe enlisted in 1827 and served in the 1st Regiment of Artillery and after two years of service, he chose to find a substitute to finish out his five year enlistment and secure an appointment at the United States Military Academy at West Point.
Thanks to Poe's wealthy guardian, John Allan, he was admitted into West Point in July 1830, but was court martialed seven months later.
