Sturgeon are not rare. The Winnebago system has the healthiest population of sturgeon in the world, also is the most regulated. The only way of taking a sturgeon is by spear during the spearing season. You are doing more harm by fighting that fish hook and line.

@@Jacob_6420 it's the comradery. We only get to spear from 7am to 1pm and then it's party time. Sturgeon season is the most sought after time of the year up here. Family's and friends and community's get together for spearing. You wouldn't understand unless you come experience it.

Everyone's pissed about getting a REGULATED QUOTA of Sturgeon, but you go to any Indian Reservation and they spear the shit out of everything. Spend a weekend up here in on the Menominee Reservation in Wisconsin and you will see what I'm talking about. Yet, no one has a problem with that.

As much as the spearing just doesn't sit right with me the local wildlife dudes seem like they keep a pretty insane track on them.... I mean they get tagged and you gotta register them. So I can only hope the local wildlife authorities got an eye on them. I'm not gonna lie I do like uncut angling approach of like barely holding the fish outta the water. Still interesting to learn about different traditions from the people who came before us (I bet it was a indigenous people kind thing. The sturgeon back than were probably fucking huge)

Yeah I'm in BC , crazy seeing this , but it seems regulated. But shit what if one gets off ,that fish isn't having a good time. I've been lucky to see monster sturgeon jump multiple times, I don't see the need to fish for them, seals are starting to eat the tired fish from crappy revivals

the biggest sturgeon caught where we live was i think 1200 pounds.. it was the length of a small pickup truck, infact its head was on the roof of the mans truck and tail was hangin a bit over the tailgait... so THERE!! ;p;p, and also when we put the dams in waay back when, they used explosives in the water, and an 800lber floated up ;p;p;p

might be a dumb question. But what do they do with them after? I don't know anyone that eats sturgeon. Maybe they do though? I would say this is pretty messed up if they're just wasting the fish, but if they're doing it to keep the population at bay and let other species have a decent population then I guess I don't see any issues. It is Amazing how many People think this is some sort of Crime and is "A Disgusting Tradition". One, the whole Conservation thing and How where you Live its illegal. Yah maybe in your State but in Other states and Major Lakes it's different cause the Locals know the How to Conserve and what they need to do to Keep a Healthy Population. Two, Why do you think its so Wrong to Fish for these Amazing Fish. If it's Because of the Spearing part than I don't know what to tell yah but if there was a REAL Problem with the Population they wouldn't allow Spearing Plain and Simple. I don't Live in a Place that Spear Sturgeon but I work for a Sportsman's Assc. I'm not even from the US but from watching this and seeing how many people go out and do this on the opening day and seeing how prepared everyone gets I very much doubt the sturgeon are in danger of being over fished or this would not be allowed to happen, honestly from watching this just common sense would make you realise nothing is being done that would be harmful to sturgeon numbers.
