Not enough water is my take on these results. The plants decided on focusing on making seeds in small fast ripening/rotting fruits instead of growing into juicy sweet watermelons. Don't sleep on replanting the seeds next year though, the stress the plants endured is in the DNA of the seeds and the plant has done it's best do prepare a new growing plan in that DNA based on it's harsh experience.
