I am immensely proud of you Mr Codger. You have proved yourself to be a beautiful human who examines their own 'stuff' and privilege... and despite that.... the normal sanctimonious way you have ..... decided to appreciate the language and work on your pronunciation. I am so appreciative because your passion is palpable and personable and your production is just so wonderful. The Google earth and drone footage is awesome xx

Tena koe e hoa, what an awesome series of open conversation. Te Amo-O-Te-Rangi, is where Ngapuhi landed when retreating to Taruru. Can I make mention that Ngati Maru, gained vengeance when the attacked Rangatira Matahaea pa in Puketona, inland from the Bay of Islands. We still hold to our hearts the two Mere Pounamu, Te Wira and Te Tutai-A-Maui. Nga mihi e Kara.

Tiaho was a female war slave of Ngati Maru given to Tau Kokopu Nga Puhi/Ngati Wai , my Tuupuna. .I wouldn't have come into this world with out Tiaho. I went to THAMES high 1976 the local kids Ngati Maru heard my surname and yelled " we know who you are! " Then bang! Over I went.

Excellant video , Ive visited Hika's Pa , where the waka would turn around, , Stood where William Bambridge sketched the store in 44 .There's something special about that spot ,or so the fairies and my Mother say lol. Apart from literature by A Middleton and J Binney & N Finn (sacred soil ) could you recommend more reading/account's for a novice interested in this area Sincerely with thank's. .

Hi Clint, glad you are enjoying the videos. If you want to read some 1st hand accounts, then I recommend reading Marsden Journals of his trips to NZ. He set up the Mission Station at Hohi (Rangihoua) on his 1st visit in 1814, then the Kerikeri Mission on his trip in 1819 or 1820, can't remember, then set up Paihia on his trip in 1823 I believe. Below is a link to the compilation of his journals, they are absolutely fascinating. www.enzb.auckland.ac.nz/document/?wid=1060&page=1&action=null

Ngati Haua and Te Waharoa took this tribe ngati maru in.
@kiwicodger2 жыл бұрын
Yes Te Waharoa was very understanding of Ngati Maru's plight, but they took advantage of his goodwill and overstayed their welcome. The battle at Taamatawiwi convinced Ngati Maru to return to their rohe. I will cover that battle sometime in the future.

Te Totora Pa? Its Totara Pa
@kiwicodger2 жыл бұрын
I tend to use the terminology of naming that relates to the time period being discussed. Modern day terminology is 'Totara Pa', but in the Journal of the Polynesian Society accounts of ancient history it is referred to as 'Te Totara Pa'.

@devious1 given that you can't even spell pronunciation correctly, I think that is a very strange statement. And FYI te reo Māori "WH" does not equal te reo Pākeha "F", it is a different sound, but I could not explain it in letters.

Not at all Puhi. Our tipuna Te Koki Te Ururoa Rewharewha was Hongi’s cousin and was on this taua. It was indeed a great slaughter at Te Totara, and many slaves were taken back to the north. This battle was actually utu for a defeat inflicted by Ngāti Maru and others who had come north in the 1790s and laid waste to many kainga around BOI area.
