It's amazing to me that so many people DON'T know what all the lines on the rules and mats are for! So much money can be spent on better fabrics and materials instead of buying every template shape in every size and spending 100's if not 1000's of dollars on templates and storage accessories in which to keep them! Learning some very basic math skills and a well made ruler or cutting mat and a straight edge will allow to to make your own templates to speed up production or just layout each piece as shown here! Great video!

Thank you for making this video! I search all over the internet for 3 hours until this video popped up. I want to use my layer cakes to make huge hexagons, and the largest template available was an 8.5" and that is not big enough for me. I am saving this video forever! I really wish there were more video from anyone who can show what can be done with those diagonal lines on the cutting mat or even the rulers without buying more templates or specialized rulers. Sigh...

Nice video. What was your finished size hexagon when you started with a 5" square? I need to make a 7 1/2" hexagon. Would I start with a 7 1/2" square to end up with the right size hexagon? Thanks!

Renee Muir did you ever figure out the hexagon sizes? ie: if you use a 5”square does that make a 5” hexagon?

It turns out perfect. Thanks for sharing.

You mentioned that you can make them any size but didn’t give us the math to figure it out. I also noticed that you don’t reply in the comments below. So I’ll try one more time. If you use a 5” square would the end result be a 5” hexagon? I wish you would answer…
