I had a male Borzoi over 20 years ago. Part of my breeder's agreement was I had to wait until he was 18 months. Giant breeds mature more slowly and takes longer for their growth plates to mature. Ora is a beautiful girl with a beautiful name.

First of all: fabulous hairdo Second, I'm waiting for my borzoi's frist heat cycle and I don't know what I need to be looking for except for the swelling and the blood ofcourse. Remember me? I had my own borzoi puppy a month after you got Ora, so I was very happy to get the 'this is what will happen next month' video's.. And if you noticed I said Borzoi's instead of borzoi... yeah I got another one. We adopted my first borzoi's sister!

Ahhhhh!!! congrats! (SEND ME PICS) Oh man, first indication was a change in behavior. Ora got really snuggly, she wanted to be in constant contact. Then swelling. Followed by minimal bleeding for a couple days, then heavy bleeding for about 4.5 days, followed by clear / yellow discharge. The whole Estrus portion lasted 10 days.

Maybe a video only for the first month, I think it would help a lot for new owners of Borzoi. I am experienced dog owner for decades, but nothing prepares me for this puppy tornado. First month was hell, second she gradually calms down, when her teeth full grown she changed drastically, literary overnight. She is 6 months old now and she is the most wonderful dog ever.

So true, the first month is hell, I did a buncha videos about that time, but good idea to make a specific one

We're still trying to decide what we're going to do with our two girls. Our breeder also recommended that we wait until after their first heat before spayingl. Hopefully we still have 7 months or so before we have to deal with things.
@esperborzoi3 жыл бұрын
It is a growing consensus amongst breeders and even some vets, that waiting until the first heat can be heathy for larger slower growing breeds like borzois. Ultimately it is up to you. Esper was spayed when we got her, it was part of her adoption agreement, and has had no issues.

Obviously, this episode is about a different kind of heat, but maybe you could do one about how your borzois cope with the weather? Neither L.A. nor Arizona are famous for their cool summers. The NW of France is, or used to be, but in the current heat wave Rika is not happy...

My german short hair male started to turn into a macho jackass around 6months. To be my service dog he had to be mentally balanced. My vet would neuter early he wanted to wait til 11/2yrs. I got a vet that agreed with me and he got neutered. He is now a fantastic service dog. Funny enough I've been asked many times if hes intact for breeding.🙄🤦♀️

Can you find a vet who does laparoscopic spaying (i. e. makes just a small hole instead of cutting the belly open)? It's more expensive, but easier on the dog and a friend assures me it's well worth it. Secondly, my breeder insists as well that spaying a borzoi that is not fully grown is an extremely bad idea. I am not sure I'll have her spayed at all because I'm more afraid of incontinence (for which spaying increases the risk especially in the big breeds, according to what I have read) and the increased risk of some cancers (osteosarcoma is supposedly among them) than of the management problems during the heat cycle. Might change my mind though after experiencing the bloody details... Thirdly, Rika couldn't have been better behaved during her first months. She mostly slept, and sometimes played. But I have a huge backyard, which must have helped. And I had puppy-proofed the house. Things have become more difficult as she's been growing: She is now tall enough to reach the back of the kitchen counter when standing up - my fault for leaving the hard-boiled eggs out to cool. 2 were left of the 9 I had boiled...
@esperborzoi3 жыл бұрын
Such great info! I gotta look into lapro spaying. Sorry about your eggs =)
@notafan12753 жыл бұрын
@@esperborzoi Don't worry, I got carried away buying chicken and have more eggs than I know what to do with. I would have preferred it, though, if Rika hadn't left eggshells in the sofa...

Do you think a video for new owners to ensure they teach doggo one word or simple commands... eg, when I want Arlo to go to the loo I say ..do wees... he's very good. My dad just told me their terrier mix sometimes goes inside very early in the morning and he's about 3. Routine is good for dogs and I was told that borzoi don't toilet in their home... Arlo doesn't. I've watched all your videos so not sure if this was previously covered.. cheers
@esperborzoi3 жыл бұрын
Borzois are exceptionally clean, we haven't had any indoor accidents in a very long time. I haven't done any videos specifically on one word simple commands, but you nailed exactly how it works - consistency consistency consistency and then reward when you get the behavior you want.

Do they all shed terribly or are the silky ones less sheddy I wonder. Years ago while showing an Afghan I knew people with Borzoi and oh boy did they shed. They had a rougher feeling coat though. Just wondering.
