After years of resisting, I finally took the step to start an SSRI. It was tough to face, but my mood swings are now balanced, and it’s been one of the best things for my family and me. I also stopped using alcohol to cope with intrusive thoughts, and it’s made a world of difference. You don’t have to do this alone. Get help.

Thank you for this conversation. I listened to every second and wish it went longer.

Very few comments on a big problem in America. PTSD is not something that comes from a person experiencing combat. Mental Health care is not readily available for Americans and mental health is stigmatized making people feel uncomfortable about talking about the subject.

Is there a way to DM you. I would like to attempt to reach out to Shaun or you. Just retired after 35yrs and I've not only lost my everyday identity, it's been compounded with health issues. Started seeing a professional directly related to PTSD, but had to stop after leaving active duty, no support even with insurance. And oddly enough just started training our first malinois, great dog, having help with Prof training. Thanks

Sounds like you haven’t been setup at the VA. I highly recommend getting enrolled with healthcare from the VA. They’ll set you up with a primary care provider and they can put in a consult for you to meet with a psychologist, therapist, and a psychiatrist. Also, it’s a good idea to meet with a Veterans Service Organization to help you with the transition from active to civilian. They’ll help you navigate resources that may be beneficial for you as well as potential benefits you’ve earned from your time in service.

15:20 It’s getting better. They can’t afford to keep ignoring the metal health component of policing. My first 15 years it was an afterthought and the therapy was drinking with the team.
