My guest for this episode is Roger Ingram.
Roger has been called one of the hardest swinging lead trumpet players of modern times. Roger has played with some of the past legends of Big Band, like Louis Belson, Woody Herman, and Maynard Ferguson. And Roger’s high-octane playing was a huge part of the unique sound of Harry Conick, Jr’s band for 20 years. But Roger is more than a player, he’s also an author, a passionate educator, and of course, the Mute Meister.
Check out what Roger has to say about how it's a privilege to make living playing music, his daily routine, becoming an educator, learning from everyone you can, why you are your own best teacher, creating the best environment for a student's education, why you shouldn't care who's the best, not doing things to draw attention to yourself, the demands of playing with Harry Conick, Jr., becoming a more conservative as a player, and so much more.
So pour yourself a big glass, pull up a chair, and let the hang begin!

It was great hearing your stories and wisdom while I cleaned the garage. Best tip. Don’t fill the horn with air-move the air! Thanks!

Brings back memories of the lesson I had with Roger in Chicago right after he left (or was fired?)from Harry's band. He has definitely changed his thinking on mouthpieces ( smaller is better to a more medium size). I still think the small bore horn he plays ( he calls it medium) limits the quality of sound. He definitely still loves to talk and tell stories. You can't help liking the guy. Great job Jose!

totally disagree about smaller bores limiting the sound, especially when it applies to commercial music. Maynard played a Conn Constellation in the late '50's & early '60's-it had a .434 bore-is his sound small? I don't think so. Bill Chase's Schilke was a .450 bore-I WISH I had a sound that big-Jon Faddis also plays a .450 bore Schilke-in person, his sound is HUGE...there are other examples-it's all about making things as efficient as possible while still maintaining a good tone.

I took lesson from Roger about 15 years ago. It was almost just like this interview. He talked alot about himself and dropped all the famous names he played with. It was entertaining but I really didn't learn much except he told me to use a smaller bore horn and shallower mouthpiece to play higher . He likes to hear himself talk.

Jose, love your show. It helps to watch the fantastic players talk about the profession. Can you tell me what program you use to do the transcript. Thanks so much, John
