Hi 👋 I'm Marta living in Tallahassee Florida. Originally born in Puerto Rico but raised in New York from age three. Kate from Hawthorne cottage recommended your podcast. She was always mentioning her friend Selma. So I've binged watched all your episodes and I'm finally caught up. I've enjoyed every one Thanks for all the knitting tidbits. I'm a fairly new knitter. I've made lots of hats. I knit a Shawl for my sister and one for my older daughter. I knit 3 summer sweaters for my younger daughter. The sweaters were not what I would call a success but she wears them. I need to learn more about which yarns to use and how to choose the correct size. But I'm not giving up.

So lovely to spend time with you. I have vests on my brain also.....

I have just discovered your channel and have just begun watching Episode 56. I love your video, particularly enjoyed the beginning photography and music which set the scene for a day of knitting. There are so many cute tank tops out there now, it's have thought of knitting one for myself just as a layering piece. I have some MCN that was gifted to me, the colour is not "me". It would be perfect since noone would see it anyway! I also listened to The Midnight Library, and loved it! Before the Coffee Gets Cold is similar. Just finished American Dirt, excellent.

I love love love your Elton cardigan colors! Last year I made the Rusty Cardigan (free on Ravelry) with plotulopi (unspun Icelandic) and wonder if that's a pattern you might look at with your Letlopi wool. It's a lovely pattern with colorwork only in the yoke. I'm MNLynn on Ravelry if you want to look at mine. I'm using Letlopi right now to make the Maja Cardigan by Helene Magnusson, so I'm familiar with that fiber. I'm using oatmeal, light beige, cream, light blue and darker blue instead of the pattern colors. I gravitate towards the grayish blue colors, too. My eyes are that color, and I think that's why I like them! On another note, I'm listening to The Book of Joy after you recommended it. Thank you for the soothing and thoughtful recommendation.

Have just completed plain top down cardigan in the same shade of BaaRamEwe yarn and made Dorset buttons which have worked well. The yarn was a joy to knit and comfortable to wear, however finding it pilling which hope will stop after the initial wearings. Thinking of the Renunclus with the remainder as I’m late into the party! Another interesting and enjoyable podcast, thank you. Jackie , UK

I used to knit toe up socks when I first started knitting them but I really wanted to learn heal flap and gusset. As I was learning to knit top down I bought a sock ruler. The sock ruler was a complete game changer for me. My socks are always exactly how I want them now, I just slip it over the ruler. I like an 8 inch leg and need an 8.25 foot before starting the toe. I rarely need to try them on. No more guessing and they always fit exactly the same.

I love to knit cuff down socks. They’re quick, easy and require no thinking which is great for my recovering chemo brain. I can’t wait until I can do color work knitting again but at the moment it’s a too much for me to follow the pattern. I just finished a sock similar to your cable knit sock and got the second on half finished when I went to my yarn stash and alas I did not have any more of the yarn that I was knitting the sock with. Uiggghhhh! I’m going to Germany next week and will take my knitting tools with me to do some knitting with my cousin. I also have an empty suitcase to replenish my yarn stash. @@littlebigknits I’m one of the lucky ones. I was early stage 2 colon cancer and I tell everyone get a cologuard test with your annual physical. I was totally asymptomatic and thank goodness for my astute G P he insisted I take a cocloguard test. I am now cancer free and knit socks for the chemo clinic where I had my treatments for those who suffer from neuropathy like me. Thank you for your kind words and I look forward to your next podcast. Another lovely podcast! I recently had a vintage sock knitting machine refurbished. Love the history of it, but the learning curve is huge! So now I’m also converting tubes into socks. The question is, how many pairs of socks is too many?!!! I’m also knitting the Arne & Carlos Christmas stocking, I’ll be happy to add it to the KAL. I made the Kate Davies Evendoon cardigan with stripes like her pullover version, fits well - but the number of threads to sew in is ridiculous! Loved The Midnight Library!

I love your Elton- looks like a great sweater that you will reach for often. I just finished listening to Road Ends. Disfunctional is an understatement for that family (lol), but they did sort themselves out as time went by. Thanks for the recommendation. I am going to read more from that author. I am still looking for the perfect yarn for my first Ranunculus-I am so indecisive 🤷‍♀️. Fredericton looks so beautiful-it makes me want to plan a trip to the maritimes again-maybe next fall. Your Elton is wonderful 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I think metal buttons like an antique silver would be awesome, in my opinion of course. On another note… I’m mostly a “small person knitter”. In other words, I have always knit for my babies (4) and now my grandkids (10). It’s only recently I’ve decided to delve into adult knitting. So far, I’ve made the Aileas by Isabell Kramer (LOVE) and the Anker Summer knit by the Petite Knitter which is a wonderful pattern but I used Borgo de’Pazz Sira, a bamboo silk yarn that seems to have grown to the point where I think I’m going to Tink back the ribbing and then some. . My question to you… how does one buy a “sweaters quantity” of a yarn most appealing before a pattern is picked? Any guidance would be most appreciated and indeed helpful. Thanks in advance Selma.

Having knit many garments I know that I need about 800 or 900 at most for a vest, about 1100 for a sweater and anything bigger I just add about 200 yards more. If there are a lot of cables you may need a bit more as well. That is for my short m/l frame

Ah! I enjoyed your explanation of how you reinforced your DH's sweater cuffs....and *then* you mentioned that you used a "woollen spun" yarn. Hmmmm... I'm a sporadic spinner, but as I understand it, spinning "woollen" produces a yarn that is lighter and airier than spinning "worsted". Ergo, I'm thinking that if it's less rigidly/firmly spun, a "woollen" spun yarn is probably (possibly?) more vulnerable to wear at collar, cuffs and bottom edge, than is a 'worsted' spun yarn. You might want to check this out the next time you plan to knit a sweater for your DH...

Gorgeous Elton cardigan😀 How much positive ease did you choose? The pattern calls for a lot of positive ease (40 cm), but I would much prefer a fit like tours!

Hi Selma, what is reinforcement thread. Is it like embrodiery thread? Also, I had a thought that your husband might be pulling his sleeves and hem down a lot when he wears it because they are too short or at least he feels like they are. I've never heard of a sweater pulling out like that before. I'm probably wrong, but had that thought any way. 😉

I will have to observe him but I don’t think that is what he does. Let’s see!! Reinforcement thread is made by regia and it is a thin thread made of wool and nylon that you can add when knitting socks to reinforce and area you know will wear out more quickly or can be used in darning as well I imagine. Hope that helps 😊
