I just bought a Kia Soul EV Limited in part because of your review. Love it. Sticker price was a bit high at just over $53k, but I got $14k in incentives here in BC. $5k Fed, $3k BC, and $6k Scrap-It, for scrapping my old Suburban. I guess I could also mention that I preferred the Soul over the Niro because of the headroom and visibility in front of me. The Niro roof and sun visor were too low in front of my face. I'm not that much taller than average, at 6'2", but it really annoyed me. And the seat was the most comfortable for me out of any of the electric cars I sat in, including Tesla, but especially the Bolt. That seat was way too small, and I've heard plenty of complaints about that from other people. So although I narrowed down my choices because of range, tech, quality, and other issues, I was sold on the personal aspect that the car fit me perfectly.

Hello Brian, thanks for watching and that is great! Congratulations on joining the "Revolution"! I know you will love love the new Soul EV it is a fantastic vehicle and with those incentives, a really really good deal! I too agree with all of your ergonomic comments, even though I am not 6'2" (I wish - I'm 5'6")! That little bit more headroom and greater visibility makes a world of difference to me as well. I'd love to hear back from you in a few months on how the range is holding up for you. When you get into the spring/summer, I am sure under normal mixed driving that you can push the 500km barrier on a single charge. I could have done it with my week of driving the new Soul EV, which is outstanding in my opinion. Glad I could help and best of luck!

Thanks for another great review Ken. A very impressive vehicle, looks like you could probably reach close to 500 km range in ideal conditions once you get used to the drive modes. It would also be a great delivery or utility vehicle with the back seat removed and converted for cargo, perhaps they'll offer such a version in future, great for camping too. A bit hard to blend in at stoplights though as you mentioned, maybe they should add some lightning bolt or flame decals for the side! ☺️

Good review. What’s your expectation on this vehicle for the winter in Canada? Traction, efficiency?
@EVRevolution
@EVRevolution 4 жыл бұрын
Hola Juan, thanks for watching! It has a heat pump so when temps dip down to close to 0 Degrees C, it will still be somewhat efficient for heating. Once below that, a heat pump does not do much. So for winters, it is quite a capable BEV. As far as traction goes, I have never owned an AWD vehicle. All of my cars have been RWD or FWD. I have only been stuck in the snow once in my life - in a 1998 VW Jetta at the bottom of my driveway one winter way back when I thought I could plow thru the snowbank onto the road. So I really don't think you need AWD - unless you live in the country where the roads don't get plowed so quickly and you have more side roads and gravel roads to deal with. Otherwise, a FWD car with the BEST set of 4 snow tires you can afford will perform quite fine. This 2020 Kia Soul is no exception to that!

I own this vehicle. It’s fantastic. The only two issues are: 1. The lack of front parking sensors. 2: When in Eco mode everything is fine EXCEPT it cuts off the front passenger heater. My wife won’t stand for that so it gets very little Eco use in the winter. 🤣 However the enormous battery is wonderful! Bye-bye Range Anxiety.
@EVRevolution
@EVRevolution 4 жыл бұрын
Hello and thanks for watching. Yes I agree on the front parking, should at least have a sensor. What you describe is what ECO mode is supposed to do, however as you pointed out the larger and more accurate BMS/GOM takes away range anxiety. I'm seriously looking at this as my next BEV in a couple of years. My wife wants my Leaf to use all the time so in 2-3 years I hope to add another BEV to our car family. All the best!

I have to say that I drive my car to the ground. I drive her about 400 per day for Uber and Lyft. Mine is a typical 2015 plus 2.0. I leave my car idling often for hours. between rides over a 20 hour period. And she keeps running great with no faults. I change the oil every 3 months with synthetic Mobil 1. I add Lucas fuel injector cleaner every few months. I have to admit that this is the longest lasting and rugged car I have ever owned. My Mustang or Honda Accord would of quit on me a long time ago! I love how long wearing and powerful this motor is!

Ordered mine over the Niro and Kona based on 3 things: - price - comfort - dealer experience I didn't like the Hyundai dealer where I live. The Niro was somewhat uncomfortable to me (seat position left the armrest too high and had to strain to look over the dash when set up correctly for my size and shape). And the Soul was slightly less expensive than the Niro as well. Add to that that the Soul was available with a 4 month lead time, the Niro would be 18 months, and the decision was easy.

KIA Canada’s website shows a range of 383 but you’re getting close to 500. Can you explain the difference?
@EVRevolution
@EVRevolution 4 жыл бұрын
Hi and thanks for watching. I can't explain, other then EPA estimates are very conservative to actual best-climate experience. As I stated on my review, I was very surprised that I was driving this new Soul EV all week and kept waiting for it to get down to low range sooner. If it was not for my Fast Charger Testing, I would not have needed to charge it for the entire time I had it. Now, remember that was in ideal temps and I drive regular, eco mode on and normal starting off and stopping. No jackrabbit stuff for me. Just drive with traffic and it behaves very nicely. I would suspect up to a 40-50% drop in very cold winter temps, as per pretty well all BEVs. Also, this was brand new (only about 1,000kms on it) so pack is fresh. To be frank, because of my experience with it, it's at the top of my next BEV purchase, hopefully in a few years.

Thanks for the review. I really wish Kia and Hyundai would offer a large battery pack car without all the luxury add ons. Most eco aware folks don't want leather! and don't need a sunroof, premium audio etc. If they unbundled all the lux features it would likely lower the price by 6-8k as well.
@EVRevolution
@EVRevolution 4 жыл бұрын
Your welcome and thanks for watching and feedback! Yes that is true, however over 40% of the BEV pricing is for the batteries and pack, so that is what will drive prices down to cost parity.

I've heard that the new Kia Soul mandatory maintenance costs are a lot higher.
@EVRevolution
@EVRevolution 3 жыл бұрын
Hello and thanks for watching! Appreciate the info and I am not sure about any increases in mandatory costs. One must be careful with OEM warranties and service plans. The vast majority of the Service Maintenance Schedules involve a lot of optional work. If I were you, I would check with your local Dealer or Kia Corporate (they all have Country specific Customer Service numbers) on what exactly you HAVE to do to maintain the warranties? Since there is no oil to change in the BEVs, basically everything other than maybe some checks would be non-mandatory. Again, OEMs put a lot of stuff in their service schedules but most of that is checks and changing of fluids. So for now, I don't believe any Kia BEVs maintenance costs are higher. I'd appreciate it if you sent me an email to EVRevolutionShow@gmail.com with any confirmation you get from Kia. Thanks, Ken

So why did you rate this over the nero? Style?
@EVRevolution
@EVRevolution 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. Basically the style and overall package for me. I really don't need a larger SUV-ish type vehicle for me personally, so the Soul fits into the smaller than an SUV and bigger than a traditional hatchback mold. It's a weird vehicle, something like the Honda Element/Nissan Cube where there really is no category for it. That to me makes it a great fit for our lifestyles and uses. Pricing wise in CDN dollars, there is a $6K difference with the Soul being higher than the base Niro. Uplift the Niro to the top model trim, and the difference changes with the Niro being $2K higher. So it would be tough but if budget allowed, I would go with the Soul 64kWh. If not, the Niro Base Trim (64kWh). I believe the Soul is a bit better at efficiency and range than the Niro.

great review! what do think depreciation hit will be after 3 years?
@EVRevolution
@EVRevolution 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark, thanks for watching and for the feedback! Hard to say as I always keep my cars for a long as possible (8-10+years) so I really don't worry about depreciation. However in saying that, it's easy to understand that the majority of vehicles depreciate up to 30% as soon as you drive it off of a dealer lot. Even Teslas. Some not as much as others. The Kia Soul makes the Top 14 List of Slowest Depreciating EVs (motoringresearch.com, Aug 7 2019 article) at number 12, however that may be different per geography. Estimates for the previous Gen Kia Soul EV with the smaller battery put it at about 52.8% of value after 3 years. This newer one IMO should rate better since the quality and range are improved. As a side note, on this list of Top Slowest Depreciating EVs you would probably expect Tesla to be number 1. However in fact the Jaguar i-Pace is #1, retaining a value of 74.6% after 3 years, followed by the VW eGolf at 66.3% and the Tesla Model X at 64.6%. Rounding out top 5, #4 Nissan Leaf at 64.5% and Hyundai Ioniq at 61.7%. Tesla Model 3 does not make the list since it is too new. Hope this helps.

Hi George, it will come with a Level 1 charger for home, at least here in NA. I'm not sure about UK, Europe or other geographies. Most EVs come with L1. For now I'll stick with my 2018 Sol EV with it's full glass sunroof. I would really miss that glass roof and the 20 only has a small moonroof. The top level 20 is also going to be unaffordable. Bigger battery. Higher price tag. I'll just get a used model S or wait for the model Y for that kind of money.

Can this car have a tow bar?
@EVRevolution
@EVRevolution 4 жыл бұрын
Hello Anders, thanks for watching. I would check with the manufacturer on any Tow ratings as this could void parts or the whole warranty. Sometimes they just state "towing is not recommended" but don't provide any firm statements yes or no, if warranty will be affected, etc. If you are looking to tow, like a small caravan, I would contact your local Kia Customer Centre and get a response in writing to clarify exactly. Let them know what you are thinking to do. As far as a bike rack goes, I see no reason why you can't put up to a class 2 2-inch receiver on it and carry up to 4 bikes, provided the tongue/hitch weight is no more than 200 pounds. Again, to play it safe, check the warrant manual and if it does not state anything, contact Kia to get a response and protect yourself. I know of many people who pull trailers and have bike racks on their EVs (I have one for my Leaf) and have no issues.

Hello and thanks for watching! I'm not sure if you would be able to find any MY2020's available in the U.S. that are not dealer demos. Kia announced late last year that these won't be coming for sale now until CY2021 due to constraint issues.

I don’t like that you can’t see the front turn signals from the side. Nor can you see the wing mirror turn signals. So at junctions, other drivers would have to guess your intentions. Unless Kia are going to supply a man to walk in front waving a flag... I can see the invisible signals as a real hazard.

My one wish would be for rear wheel or all wheel drive... I'm not a fan of putting so much torque through the front wheels. If my LEAF chewed through tires at such a high rate, this thing is going to require a new set every year. Yes, I have a heavy foot and that will not change. This might be the one reason that I just hold out for a Tesla Model 3 - that and the charging network. The CCS charging network is still a joke. However, my expectation is that with USA federal rebates, I can probably get into this car sooner and cheaper. I like it much better than the Kona and Niro. I've rented a gasoline powered Soul and it exceeded expectations in just about every way - I imagine the EV version would be fantastic.

I lamented the lack of AWD at first too, but it's surprising just how well the traction control mitigates torque steer while preserving acceleration in this car -- even flooring it in sport mode causes very little tire chirp, yet still allows 6.3 second 0-100 times. They really programmed it well. I haven't tried it with the traction control turned off though as I suspect THAT could cause major wheelspin.
@EVRevolution

Thanks for the comments and Larry you have good points, however I am not a big fan of AWD unless there are compelling reasons for needing it. It's your pocket book so whatever you decide (both are excellent choices), the main thing is to get into a BEV sooner than later if you can.

Hi Dean, thanks for watching and agree that for true mass market adoption we need the pricing to come down to $20K range. Even less would be great. More choice is coming and unfortunately, all the manufacturers have copied Tesla's approach to introducing BEVs buy starting with the more expensive model lines and pricing, eventually with economies of scale and supplier costs coming down, will then move to more affordability and greater product breadth.

You basically can't. The price leader is essentially vapourware. When I configured the Model 3 like I wanted it the price was 10k over the Soul, for basically the same equipment (and in fact the Soul has some things the Model 3 does not). Tesla's configurator is to blame here -- if we didn't have to opt for AWD or the larger batteries to get the equipment we wanted the Model 3 would be a much more attractive proposition, price-wise.
@EVRevolution
@EVRevolution 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks QICR for the feedback and thanks @TIM and @Heidi for your comments. Agreed, the Model 3 does not work for many and that is why we need choice, even from other manufacturers that are still in compliance car mode. Compliance or not, Kia and Hyundai have built really really good BEVs that in my opinion are just as good as Tesla for being a BEV. Sure they may not have the cult following and software OTA/autopilot capabilities, but they all offer very good battery systems and driving characteristics, along with ergonomics and a good price point that will appeal to many!

From a taste standpoint, I don't like this car at all. Too many buttons and knobs. Too many contrasting colors. Turn signals that turn on and off in a way apparently trying to emulate incandescent lamps-bad idea IMO. Barfy body color. Just bad all around. I suppose it looks better than a Pacer, or a Vega, or for that matter a cube.

Thanks Ronald for watching and for your opinions. Not everyone shares them and like I keep saying like a broken record, more choice is good and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I'm afraid you've fallen victim to Hyundai/Kia's misleading marketing, which makes reference to using 100 kW chargers without making clear that the platform will accept only ~70 kW. Hi Peter, thanks for watching and for your info. I'm pointing out with all the reviews I do, what the manufacturers specs states. Hence one reason why I like to test features, especially DCFC-ing capabilities (where I can) to see the real life numbers.
@peterdonnelly6732
@peterdonnelly6732 4 жыл бұрын
@@EVRevolution I can't find the exact wording right now, but it was deliberately ambiguous, referring to the duration of charging on a 100 kW fast charger rather than the maximum wattage accepted. I haven't seen that latter number on any specs, but I might have missed it. Edit: The official spec sheet online says this: "DC fast charge with Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) to 80% charge -- 75 Min (50 kW) / 1 Hour (100 kW)” The numbers in parenthesis refer to the EVSE. Nothing about the maximum set by the car. This is not a criticism of your fine reviews, which are leagues ahead of most of the "experts" on KZbin.
