Man, I had one of these back in 86 when I was 17. So beautiful and smooth. 68hp was epic for a 500 back in 86. Hyd clutch was nice. Thanks for the memory!

Same, yes I think I was 17 as well, I remember riding to the beach, and the strip, girls would just hop on and start squeezing you for rides😂

This was my first motorcycle. Bought in February 1986 for $2600 . I put the lower fairing on her. Only thing rear tire was pretty thin. The ninja 600 had a little nicer tire. But I loved her. Never rode before but had a stick car at the time. I got on and rode her home.

Nice bike looks like it's in good shape. I have one just like it. There are many small differences between the 84-85 and the 86. Especially in the fuel system, hopefully your fuel tank is good as the 86 has a different tank. There are also parts out there to rebuild the fuel valve, which is also different than the 84/85. And the carbs, you'll get good at removing and installing them if you make any changes to the exhaust. They are a fun bike and the 86, in my opinion, is the best year. Looking forward to your progress. Cheers!

Where are parts to rebuild the gas tank fuel valve (petcock)? Specifically 84/85

I have an 84 that i gotta get back into running condition again hopefully. I bought it from someone way back in the day so it needs work now. The guy installed an oil cooler inside the lower cowling under the exhaust, jetted the carbs, put racing foot pegs on, lower handle bars and installed a cowling on the rear of the seat to make it a one seater. That seat cowling makes the bike look like a racer. And he custom painted it with the same scheme but changed the blue to a dark almost black blue, and the red to a dark kind of a candy apple red. It looked sick. Right now I am working on an 86 Yamaha FZ600 I own also.

I have one of these bikes, I've found the easiest tires to find in the right size are Bridgestone Battleax ones

I got one in 91, it was a 86 model, used, but babied, i wanted a more racing looking bike, with full fairings like ninja or hurricane back then, but the price was right, and i paid only 1.5 k for it with like 2 k milage, the ninjas was going for twice that just for a used ones, same with gxers and CBR, and FZs they all were way out of range for 17 yr old like me back then. So i got this one, and rode it for years, and all over the east coast, i put lots of miles on it, hit a car on it bent the front forks, got them straightened out, ran like new. I eventually parked it, and it set for a few years, then sold it, btw it started right up, this person rode it for years as well, and sold it putting lots of miles on it, so these things were serious good engines, like tanks. I think what made them last so long is the high rev limiter, you know it cuts off the engine if red lined, then turns back on in milliseconds, it kills the spark plugs. That makes these last longer and prevents over revving and blown engines, although i didn't like the limiters on Hondas back then, they kept them on their bikes for years. I got a CBR RR years later and power commander, no carbonators, fuel injection, and probably half the weight of that interceptor, and they are night and day, but it was a good beginner bike to learn to ride on.

I had it running from being parked for a while. But discovered a blown head gasket. I'm sure it's very fun as a power to weight ratio is amazing.

Same here. 15 at the time, putting around on a 49cc RX-50. Must have made 100 trips to the local Honda and Kawasaki dealers to sit on the Interceptors and Ninjas. Brother's friend let me ride is Interceptor 500 down the street and back when I was 15. Amazingly, that's the only sport bike I ever rode. All of my bikes in following years were cruisers (Exciter 250 and a Shadow 700). Good times. Simpler times.

I can get hold of Bridgestone bt46 tyre's for my vf500. Also Dunlop arrowmax offers the sizes recommended.

Stock indicators if memory serves were square black and big. They were expensive bikes in there day but very nice, vf 4 engine is a fiddle to work on as it's all packed in tight a mechanic told me years ago you will need 3/8ths socket set. Give it some love.

Honestly, I kinda love the chunky indicators that come with this bike standard. It makes it feel kinda like a rescue ranger toy, which fits the vibe about right.

Still would like to get one of these, the sound is one of the reasons, and you don't really see them much in running and rideable condition.
