Another great video. Please keep these coming! A circuit I would love to understand better would be the Colorsound Overdriver. It seems to have components that speak to the principles you've discussed already, but there seems like there's a lot more going on (lots of feedback between the different transistors, maybe?) and I'd love to understand what's happening there.

Hi Josh, I managed to hard clip the signal coming directly from the pickups by using diodes that have a very low Forward Voltage (schottky and low Vf germanium), It sounds amazing as a passive distortion stage. It would be a great first stage for a pedal

Good boy, old school for electronics? I still have my dad's B & K oscilloscope dual trace run time 33MHs. I'm playing with building a Big Muff Pi from a schematic. I'll call mine Small Putts Pi. Thanks to Stu-Mac for the switch SPST. With good instructions to easily pull it off for sustain. I even have a aluminum case to make it real. Fun!

Is there actually some signal compression going on then with the clipping diodes? Looking at the scope near the beginning of the vid made me think this. I need to get one of those Peak testers as my main source of components is salvage- I love tearing apart old electronics, especially Japanese-made late 70's 80's stuff. Ive amassed quite a large stash of stuff Id love to test prior to breadboarding! Great vid again Josh, Thank You SO much for sharing this knowledge with us! I for one have taken notes to assure the bits stick to my brain matter.

30:04 I’ve used a set of magnifying tweezers since I started building pedals. I turned 50 this year, and my eyesight has gone to “shizzle.” Reading schematics, components, resistor color coding - everything requires some optical crutch

Hopefully you see this Josh! Quick question; does capacitor orientation matter? On the LPB1-a-drive-a-fuzz schematic, the 2.2uf and 10uf to ground seem to have a specific polarity (and a slightly different symbol?), whereas the coupling capacitors have no mention..

Biggest difference between silicon and germanium diodes is germanium isn't as good at being a semiconductor. The germanium diodes start conducting at a lower current; in datasheet terms, they have a softer knee, which gives softer clipping. LEDs are also pretty shite at rectifying, which is why they're often used with op amp distortion. A good way to get something very close to the clipping characteristics of germanium diodes is to use Schottky diodes and a low value (~10 ohm) tail resistor.

I was just doing this exact thing Saturday night until like 4am. I put together a germanium Electra circuit on my breadboard and hooked up all my different diodes to my atlas dca pro. I ended up filling my whole markerboard up with diode measurements and tried them in the circuit. I love this stuff

Schottky diodes and Unijunction transistors sound really good as clippers going by dyi demos. Neither appears commercially. Schottys need a boost after clipping, so that's probably why.

What is the best solid state amp for breadboarding? I have been using a Fender Frontaman 10G. It sounds pretty good, but the 6" speaker doesn't give a good representation of the lows. Usually, if the circuit sounds good on that amp it will sound even better through a bigger speaker.

Hallo Adam. My kind of monitoring guitar effects is simple and needs less space. The amp is a HOTONE MOJO DIAMOND with ~5Watt. The potis are fixed: Gain 9 o'clock, Bass 12h, Middle 12h, Treble 12h and Volume from 9h up to 14h. You get a F..... Clean channel sound, very neutral. Seeing you with a bread board and a bunch of cheap diodes makes me lose the magic of these pedals. Why are we spending >$100's on some magic pedal when it's $1.50 of caps, resistors, and diodes?

I understand what you’re saying, and I share the sentiment to some degree but it is an oversimplification to an extreme. Apply this logic to anything else in life and you’ll see that it doesn’t really work. We go to restaurants and let people cook our food that we can cook, we buy computers that we could build ourselves, and we buy clothes that we could easily make for a 20th of the price. What we pay for in a product is someone’s creativity and their imagination and their ability to execute a product that works. We also pay for that person or company as they stand behind their product in the long term and we pay for the convenience. Also, an investment that is always usable to get a return on. when you build something on your own nobody’s going to buy it because it’s DIY. Again, I understand what you’re saying, but in all reality, it doesn’t hold a lot of reality if you know what I’m saying.
