Chef Phathanani, I'm very proud of your initiative in trying to understand African Spirituality in its entirety. I think the point of departure here is that SPIRITUALITY outside of the African context is in it's essence multidimensional and multi-faceted. We ALL serve and are created by ONE Divine Creator. The only thing that makes us different as human beings is what mode or vehicle we use to connect to that SOURCE ENERGY. This is a fact that is true outside of colour, outside of race, culture, religion and any other demographic. This is why you will find Sangomas that incorporate elements of Buddhism, Sangomas that use tarot cards and other forms of healing like sound baths- because that is the mode or vehicle to connect to a Higher Power. That SOURCE energy. In this interview, I'm sad to say I couldn't watch the whole thing, because it felt to me as if your stance was defensive instead of open. There are many parallels and similarities in Spirituality as a WHOLE, I would urge you to do a bit of research in Indian Spirituality as well. Like Mkhulu Ameer stated, there is a common practice of INITIATION that both black Africans and Indian people sometimes go through to then be later initiated as a Spiritual Healer. There are white people who are Mediums who also connect to SOURCE energy and the Spirit of our loved ones who have passed on. We all have Spirit Guides and when you connect with them deeper you might find a Spirit Guide that is Indian, Egyptian etc. Yes it is important to safe guard the sacredness of African Spirituality but let us not box SPIRITUALITY into one singularity because then we lose the core of what Spirituality is. To be Spiritual is to believe in our interconnectedness as humans to the UNIVERSE and to SOURCE energy. To our DIVINE CREATOR. Tribalism, will have us become narrow minded, unwilling to learn and confused. I understand that how we grew up and what we were taught at a young age is responsible for this. My curious Chef, let me teach you something about initiation, it is not tradition, colour, or clan based but culturally and element based. Tradition is the one you belong to as a Mbatha but culture Sir, is practiced by the people or community you live with. How you maybe “phahla” at home, the animals used, the rituals are your traditions, but if your spirit says go and get healed in Kenya, how that Gobela in Kenya heals the “Mbatha’s, etc. belong to a specific tradition but also belongs to a chosen culture that must heal the Mbatha’s. Nguni is a culture but within the Nguni, you find different traditions. So when a white person is initiated within the Nguni culture, we are not interfering with their “white” traditions but healing the fire element. Why you might ask, because the Nguni where chosen to or for healing the fire element, as much as the Ndawe people where chosen to initiate the water element is what they know and how they heal people within their culture as a community. How that community greets each other or even do when someone is getting married, that is what we call culture. So from now on, do not look at being initiated as a traditional thing, how to heal a person spiritually does not mean how they practice at home, but it is spiritual and spirit belongs to god or creator, and when you look at the essence of the creator, god is elementary. For example, we see the sun (fire element), the mountains (earth element), the rivers and oceans (water element) and tornados as natural disasters (air element), and these are some of the evidences that we prove that there is a creator somewhere. So when you are called into “Iphehlo”, it is because some of these elements are out of coordination and must be aligned. A Sangoma is ruled by the fire element, a person of umoya is ruled by the air element, ugedla is ruled by the earth element and a person who has umndawo is ruled by the water element, as an example. Once these elements are in correct coordination, then the centre and final element is opened which is spirit, the third eye, ether, call it whatever, Chef. It is a long story, but we must not religisize spirituality, the two are not the same….

i think i can hear where Chef's questions are coming from because these are questions that many Africans have. Many have seen white sangomas as infiltrators of African sacred knowledge for purely curiosity's sake. I do however grasp Mkhulu Amir's notion of "schools of initiation" being just that 'schools' and that as a "student" of spirituality you can never be sure where your journey will lead you next or perhaps what school you may find yourself in. Spirituality knows no boundaries bakwethu. uGobela is a teacher guided by one’s Ancestors curriculum for that specific person, not by race or by what the Gobela wants to do, Nkosi yami, why is this difficult for people to understand? uMkhulu Langabi uhleli esitsho ukuthi there is no race or sexuality kwezomoya, this I believe is what she means. Thank you chef for being yourself, you have essentially shown how we as people confine spirituality into culture or religion. As humans we all have ancestors hence we all have idlozi and just as a tswana person can find themselves in an inguni phehlo, what we perceive as white people can also end up ephehlweni, its about what your spirit and spiritual guides determine will be the best way to bring forth your purpose. I'm a healer who does not have amabhayi that we see a lot of abangoma wear, I was never given those types of ibhayi by my ancestors so I will not force things to get ibhayi just because other African healers wear them. It's as individual as our DNA

This is a very interesting episode, im only watching it today. Some of us have had dreams/visions plus also everyday happenings of people of all skin colours amd cultures come to us and say we have been waiting for you❣️ We have universal spirits, some even come different tribes and 'religions', spiritual beliefs in visions just to show that they are part of our spiritual makeup. I've been to diagelo tsa moya also bungoma, im past that im not linited to stay stagnant in a certain 'religiosity'. Le ko bazalwaneng kea kena, I choose to no longer phahla and my life is excelling. I think we must all understand something here... Ubungoma is the way of the Spirit, more than it is 'the way of the black people.' In the same way that ubuProphete is the way of the spirit, more than it is 'the way of umuntu.' All in the same way that connecting with the Spirit of God (in what ever religious or cultural body) is the way of the spirit, more than it is 'the way of any living thing.' Let us always remember that these conversations are more about Spirituality, than they are about tribalism, racial (and other) segregation, or any other human construct pertaining to "the way of life."

A Sherman and A Sangoma is the same thing from different worlds. A witch and uMthakathi are the same from different worlds, and iZangoma differ like others go through water, others go through other sources. There are many portals in this world to different worlds.
