So many amazing orchids out there. The biggest enemy is lack of space haha. I wish I could have more in my apartment but I would have to get rid of some of my streptocarpus/african violet collection and the thing is they are so compact vs most orchids. I just have room for one table and a shelving unit. Another issue indoors I struggle with is presenting them nice and not having it look like a hoarder with just a bunch of ugly plastic grow pots. In a greenhouse it doesn't matter but in a living space it's just so out of place. I got my violets and streps water wicking, self watering out of diamond crystal tumblers and highball glasses that all match and look really nice but I haven't the vaguest clue what to do with my orchids it's just ugly clear pots on saucers. I don;t understand why just cheap plastic pots with a cover pot combo aren't common in the industry for orchids. Ceramic orchid cover pots are priced ridiculously too and are too heavy for shelves. Your Jenischiana blooms are just gorgeous.

Am I the last person in the world to have spotted that the pendulous flower of Stanhopea looks exactly like a flying wasp or hornet? Drooping tail, spread wings, two big eyes - like Darwin's remarks on that very deeply tubular orchid that had to have a specific pollinator, I'm sure Stanhopea has developed to attract a specific flying insect to pollinate it? I have Stanhopea Nigrini, and its musky scent is overpowering for 4 days only, before the flowers wilt....

I was looking for solutions to my drying orchid plant. Found you. You are so passionate about orchids. That's wonderful. Do you have any tips on caring for dying orchids? I live in a very warm climate, and so my plant has some problems. Mine is a phalaenopsis. How are your plants so happy and with such long beautiful roots?

The best way to work out how to care for any orchid is to use the internet to find out where and how it grows in it's natural habitat. Then try to reproduce those conditions as far as possible. That's what I try to do. I spend a lot of time on the internet when I get a new orchid trying to understand it's needs. I hope that helps.

@@HowardRice I guess I have not been able to give it the humidity it needs. But I did follow the instructions I found on the net. Leaves have not found the waxy succulence nor their shine. I would keep looking and trying. Thanks for the videos, they are very inspiring! Your plants have achieved the perfection I dream of. Have a great weekend!

Hi Howard, Love your Stanhope. Where can I get this big holed basket in the UK? The ones sold in aquatic centre are all mesh pots, way too small to pass through a flower spike. Thank you

They're manufacured in the US and are currently available from orchidaccessories.uk. They are perfect for stanhopeas. The only problem is that the plants tend to grow out of the side of the basket after a year or two so that when it comes to repotting you either have to cut away and sacrifice the basket or part of the plant. Potting quite high up in the basket helps. To some extent you can also manipulate or cut off new growths to prevent this happening in the first place.
