Hi from the Gold Coast Qld just started watching and following you as of yesterday.. really enjoying we’ve watched a lot all ready .. I said a week or so ago after looking at someone else’s videos it would be great to be on a boat on a canal. Crazy as it sounds I momentarily wasn’t even thinking about the fact our house is alongside a canal and though we’ve not bought a boat here we’ve been out on one at times when our son would stop at our wharf lol

Òbviously greasing the gland is good. What we do if theres any drips is get an empty milk bottle cut the top off and place under the gland and its easy to get rid of the caught drips...

A quick way to shut the water off on a narrowboat is to switch off the pump (it should have a circuit breaker). A bilge pump for the stern gland would also be a good idea. Enjoy the videos. Keep them coming.

Thanks Mike. There is a bilge pump but always leaves about half inch of water.

I found you yesterday and subscribed, now slowly going through your vlogs. Love your easy going attitude. I owned a wooden river cruiser that was built in 1930, so boy do I know about mending things on the go. I'll add a couple of tips as your vids remind me. No 2s. Make best use of Pubs and restaurant facilities. No 1s bucket and chuck it. Leaking stern gland, firstly do you have a bilge pump and float switch that can take of the leak overnight or while your away from the boat. A hand pump with long pick up and discharge hoses is also very handy at getting into tight spots. It's also a good idea to do regular below deck checks if your on a long run. I used to do sea trip so 7 or 8hr channel crossings were done yearly. A squirt of SG grease would take care of any drip, plus a check as the bearing cooled after use. First nip up the gland nuts a little, try turning the shaft. If you can turn the shaft freely and stop the drip OK. Don't overtighten them. Hope this is of some help, wishing safe and very enjoyable boating.

My first apartment had a temperature controlled valve to prevent you from getting burned when someone else turned on the cold water leaving you with hot water only. 90 % of the time i found the temperature valves don't quite work as intended and I too have had the valves come apart in pieces so went old school one hot water valve and one cold water valve both feeding into a central connection to the shower head. I simply let the wife know I'm jumping in the shower to avoid the cold or hot water shock. Works most of the time. If the shutoff valve is a 90 degree ball cock valve simply add a rod to the handle or a small pulley to open and close the valve quickly without having to crawl under there. Either use a rod or a small pulley or two and control wire. If using control wires one opens it and the other closes the valve. Just a thought.

Another great episode - I caught your "one year review" video and liked it so much I have subscribed and now I'm working my way forward from episode one - a sort of Netflix style binge. Nice to see you've got into waters we know - we're based on the Bridgewater and we've not been further south than Autherley - yet. When we do Pendeford narrows I send the wife ahead on foot - we've got walkie-talkies so she can tell me if the next stretch is clear so I don't meet someone and have to reverse. Very useful in locks, too, those walkie-talkies. Pro tip - buy ones which float. I dropped our first one in a lock with a very terminal plop - and there's nothing more useless than one walkie-talkie. Looking forward to the next one, and please keep them coming.

Hi you two....I’m in Australia watching your video looks like you have a pretty good camera it’s nice and clear. I will be over to the UK in June and July and hiring a narrow boat hope to see you on the canal one day. But you are coming out of the water soon where will that be. Sorry to hear about the wound on your dog but where the new decking was built over the engine area you could use a hinge to mount the steps and build the steps as additional storage. The only way presuming its mains powered 240 volt to avoid flattening your house batteries is run the clothes washer while under way then the inverter is getting it's power from the alternator on the engine keeping the house batteries in a much better state. Unless of course you are lucky enough to find a mains powered outlet you can plug into, Kind of rare on the cut unless you pay for a spot at a marina. Packing glands normally drip a wee bit of water, you do have an operational sump pump do you not? I would suggest remounting your solar panels as they are too high, just my option but look at how everybody else's solar panels are mounted and I believe you will find there mounted much closer to the roof then yours are.. Good Lord looks like church just got out.

hi about tray under shafting collect water (like one use the show come with bilge pump) and one under engine for oil and wet and dry vacuum cleaners very good way to dry and clean bilge no fuel the water if water pump should be kicking in at random to repressurise it, and you should hear that happening intermittently then have leak in the system tip from CruisingTheCut have problem with the show and water system hear all time from logs
