Episode 738 | Crypto-Jews in New Mexico

This week we present a companion piece to the national program "The Story of the Jews," which airs beginning March 25th. NMiF Producer Megan Kamerick focuses on the experience of conversos or "crypto-Jews" in New Mexico. In 1492, the Edict of Expulsion launched the diaspora of Sephardic Jews from Spain. Many found their way to the New World, including New Mexico, although they could not openly practice their religion. Dr. Frances Levine, director of the New Mexico History Museum, and historian Roger Martínez-Dávila flesh out the history of these people and their role in New Mexico heritage and identity. Sonya Loya, an artisan and educator who has recovered her family's secret Jewish past, discusses her personal journey and conversion to Judaism.

25 years ago the first thing I encountered after learning about crypto Judaism in Mexico and Latin America was a strong rejection from the worldwide Jewish community, who maintained that there were no Jews in Mexico, much less crypto Jews. They claim "Jews would not have migrated there." I am troubled by the fact that are recently as 2021, Spain is now rejecting many dual-citizenship applications from descendants of these Mexican and New Mexico crypto-Jews, and equally troubled by the number of professional genealogists who claim that the evidence and records of crypto Jews does not exist. These records have existed for hundreds of years. They are still saying that Jews would not have travelled to the New World in the early 1500s. It is a tragedy that descendants of Iberian Jewish conversos must deal both with discrimination from antiSemites, and rejection by Jewish people around the world who refuse to acknowledge our ancestry.

Yes, it is an unfortunate problem now, but a slow steady tsunami of an awakening of the crypto-jews is occurring. In the future this growing tsunami will grow to the point, that the exodus of them to Israel, eventually shall eclipse the numbers of the exodus from Egypt. I come from a community in Northern Mexico, in Nuevo León, with Sephardim roots, my grandmother used to tell us that Catholic priests would come to their homes and check their new born babies to see if they were circumcised and in that way discover crypto-jews. It's a very sad story with the first generations of "Marranos", as they were called, tried hard to pass their secret practice on to their children, who attended Catholic schools, had Catholic friends and in general, were skeptical in embracing a religion for which there were no temples (synagogues), no public life. As the first generations passed away, the following began to lose their attachment, saw themselves as Catholics and it was only several hundred years later when historical researchers began to discover the presence of crypto-jews in our region. Certain traditions remain, according to them.

But I also have ancestors from Alberto Del Canto who was a Portuguese Jew, who founded Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico as well as Diego montemayor, the 2nd founder of Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, all were crypt-Jews in the New World around 1570-1600.

Really beautiful and healing video. After decades of hesitation as a Crypto-Jew, I've embraced my Jewish roots and am now an active member of a local Synagogue. I've been welcomed as a lost member of the flock. I think some Ashkenazi Jews have needed to get used to seeing those of us who don't come from Eastern Europe, but they see my desire to reconnect the broken chains and have welcomed what I bring. If you like novels, there is a great book by Mary Morris called "Gateway to the Moon." The story relates to this topic. It starts in 1492 with a multi lingual converso heading to the New World with Columbus. The story is about him and some of his descendants in New Mexico. It was my introduction to this history.

My maternal grandfather was born in Safed in the 1890's. As a young rabbi, he was tasked with finding and bringing home those lost Jews in Spain. He told a story of meeting a man who would wrap his leather belt around his arm each morning. He would keep it like that for a while and then get on with his day. When asked why, he said he didn't know except his father and his father before him had a tradition of doing so. His wife was born in Izmere, Turkey to Jews who were driven out of Spain in the 1400's.

I'm born in Puerto Rico and my grandparents from the mountains of Puerto Rico revealed three things to me on my 13th birthday: 1) We're Jews, and that means that before Puerto Rico we came from Spain, and before Spain we came from Jerusalem. 2) You cannot tell anyone outside the family and in the family only you can tell kids that are over 13 years old. 3) If you forget Jerusalem may your tongue be stuck to your palate. I do not know who all my ancestors are. I have German ancestors who went to Scotland and mixed with the Scots, an English ancestor who settled in the Tyrol, now northern Italy, an Italian relative who lived in northwest Hungary, etc. At best most of us can only trace our ancestry back a few centuries. I live in North Carolina and like our early European History, seems that Drake may have left 300 Crypto Jews at Roanoke in 1587 and in 1565 the Spanish were in North Carolina and St Augustine FL, the Spanish were early, yet they seem to be left out of the narrative of early European American Settlers. There was also a Spanish Alliance that helped America break free from England, George Washington claimed that if not for the help of the Spanish with Money, Ships and food, America would not have been able to continue to fight be break free. Spain helped America in the Revolutionary War, many of those documents are in Spain and research continues on the Spanish alliance. While most Florida and Mississippi area Spanish colonists left for Cuba, some remained and mixed with the Indians and French. And there are some that refer to themselves as Spanish American.

That is nice to know, it makes since to go to Cuba as Havana seemed more like Europe back in the day and was so Beautiful, the many great buildings, some decaying, hope they can be saved, are reminders of a once thriving economy. George Washington called upon his friend Hayam Solomon a Sephardic Jew from Poland for help. Solomon responded with financial aid to General George Washington and with this aid Washington was able to purchase various items he required for the Revolutionary War. Hayam Solomon is a unsung hero of the Revolutionary War.

About 18 years ago, The Mark Taper Forum (Stage) in Los Angeles put on an original play entitled Palestine, New Mexico. It was written by an American Native writer and one of the stars was Russell Means. I don't know if it was ever mounted again, but we saw it and it was a great play. I'm Jewish. I grew up in the southern Baptist church and was baptized in a pentecostal church. My family came from Simon and kohens with a k and came out of transnistria before the turn of the century and well before the war. I find it interesting that DNA testing showed no relation to any of the Ashkenazi Jews registered in their tested population. I'm thinking either they're all just not related, the information lied, or all of my relatives died in the haulacaust. I did have a uncle Herman who died in the haulacaust. But all of the Jewish population in New York supposedly are not related to me. I will say that my closest relation in New York is the Levi's of Levi's jeans wear in New York. And then I've had some Jewish cousins I've met back at home. I don't know why it didn't come up as Jewish in my DNA testing

Think about the Penitentes...Catholics who go to extraordinary lengths to "prove" their loyalty to the Church and Catholicism, via physical, self-inflicted extremity. Betcha many, if not most, of their original members were Conversos. Think about how pork is served at ALL Christian holidays around here (I live in Santa Fe for 30+ years now)...even on Easter where, everywhere else in the Catholic world, lamb is served. One of the oldest (Catholic) family names in Santa Fe is Rael. That's not Spanish! It's a truncated form of ISrael. Or the surname Barajas, which is actually a Spanish-ized version of the word B'racha (blessing, in Hebrew). Or the word "bruja" or "brujo," meaning "witch" or "sorcerer"...the Catholic Spaniards told each other (to justify their persecution of Jews) that when Jews prayed, they were actually *cursing* Catholics--all Jewish blessings begin with the word "Baruch" (meaning blessed). I have actually seen kids teasing other kids who like doing their homework making a cross with their forefingers (warding off the Devil) as they say, "Oooh--he's smaaaart!" before they try to beat the kid up. There are all kinds of small things hidden in local culture which either co-opt or invert something that was originally a Jewish custom, cultural characteristic, or stereotype. The creepiest thing of all is the early-Fall thing in Santa Fe (right around Jewish New Years) called Zozobra, where they BURN an enormous effigy (on Friday night!) that's supposed to embody everybody's troubles...and which used to (not so much now, someone probably got embarrassed?) resemble a hook-nosed, dark man who was pretty clearly a hybrid of a stereotyped Jew and Native American...everyone shouting "Burn him! Burn him!"...and then spending the rest of the weekend getting drunk and putting on a VERY falsified play about how the Conquistadors and priests and the local indigenous tribes all made peace, welcoming the tribes into the Church's salvation. (This play has been somewhat amended lately, as well.) There are all kinds of ways in which the traumas of the past are hidden in plain sight around here.

Don't let them sel you a lot of extra things and their Haplogroups are from the beginning not your actual haplogroup. She may have some Sephardic DNA due to any Iberian blood but she doesn't look Iberian. I know their were some documented cases of Sephardic Jews in the Iberian Americas but not everyone who claims Sephardic ancestry is actually Sephardic just like most Black Americans are not Cherokee although many claim they are. I am very well documented on the subject since I actually have DOCUMENTED my own Sephardic ancestry and my DNA tests confirmed it ,but I don't believe everyone who says it because it is human nature to repeat things that they hear without actually knowing if it's true. Also you all need to ask your selves why the jews were persecuted.
