In this episode we will be looking at the Model 1816/Model 1822/Model 1816/22 musket with a brief discussion on the Model 1812/Standard Model of 1815, a slight mention of percussion conversion, and a reasonable amount of stammering.

This video was non stop action, (muzzle loaded) balls from wall to the wall. I was on the edge of my moms lap watching this on the train on my way to the worlds worst public school.

I just got a Model 1822 that was updated to percussion so thank you for going into detail about the original flintlocks and the percussion conversions.

Nice video on a lesser known musket. I have an 1816 conversion that was made at the Valley Forge Arsenal.

Good videos. I suggest that you drop the use of the cutesy term “rock banger”. Just use the standard term flintlock. Just my humble opinion.

Good stuff! Just puked up a model 1816 HF made ‘41 and converted. It has the block conversion with heavy putting. I have the Flintlock Books by Peter A Schmidt, trying to find out where this gun was converted at. Thanks!

My ancestor, Sebra Nelson Howard, was reportedly issued these in May/June 1861 while in the 2nd Iowa at Keokuk, Iowa. At least one of its units stacked there arms and refused to touch them again until promised newer firearms. I read one letter from another soldier where he commented derisively about the 1930s date on his lock. A later posting in his diary mentions them getting newer weapons, same bore but now rifled and offering longer range, that I guess were Model 1842s that been rifled. Later replaced with captured Model 1841 and Enfield 1853s after Fort Donelson. Finally they got new 1861 Springfields. Were any 1816/22s ever rifled????

Yes, a number of 1816/22s were sighted and rifled. I believe they stopped doing it because the pressure generated by firing a minie through it was a lot greater than just firing a smoothbore (the skirt of the bullet expands to grip the rifling, after all) and the increased pressure was blowing off the percussion cones.

Are you going to address british pattern muskets at some point?

Count on McNally to tell you who inspected this one musket in 1816. But are you gonna tell us what Ebenezer there had for breakfast? These things matter.

When I decided to boost engagement by commenting on all my videos with my personal account, I failed to consider that coming up with something different for each video would be difficult. Not gonna just copy/paste the same comment over and over again though. I may be shameless, but I'm not *that* shameless.

The "War of Northern Aggression" was the US Civil War 1861-65 not the War of 1812.

Referring to the War of 1812 as the "War of Northern Aggression" is a tongue-in-cheek joke about Canada burning down the White House (which, of course, they didn't actually do). You're right, I definitely should have called it the "War of Great White Northern Aggression."
