Fun fact: both Stephen and Bloom avoid manly Bullies: Blazes Boylan and Buck Mulligan. Symbols that are somehow masculine appear at some point of the chapter: "Beer, Beef, Business, Bibles (?), Bulldogs, Battleships, Buggery, Bishops (?)". The root "bull" (oxen?) appear 21 times during the episode. I sense there's something going on around the letter B, and the idea of bulls as manly threatening figures.
