Description:
In this Episode Eli the Computer Guy explains how to download, install and manage VMWare ESXi for Type 1 Hardware (Bare Metal)Virtualization. He then shows you the basic steps to setup and manage virtual machines on ESXi.
VMWare ESXi is simple to setup for new technicians, and can be upgraded with paid support in the future
ESXi is free for Business Use
ESXi is the Hypervisor and vSphere is the Management Software
Basic vSphere is free, but more complex capabilities must be paid for
Type 1 Hypervisors such as ESXi are used to Virtualize Servers not Desktop Operating Systems
The Hypervisor and all Virtualized Servers have their own IP Addresses
Virtualized Servers should be managed through remote administration software such as SSH or Remote Desktop.
Make sure to set CD/DVD Drive to "Host Device" and "Connect at Power On" to be able to install an Operating System from the Optical Drive on the Hypervisor.

Hello Eli , Nice video about ESXi , that is the first Vsoftware that I started with , I find it very easy to use also keep doing this great job I learned a lot from you in the last 6 months . I started with no experience 6-7 months ago , only with my passion for computers the only think I knew was the hardware part / build personal computers. Now I`m working for an company as a junior sysadmin, your videos about linux and networking helped me a lot ( I can shell script now and do net-wiring )

WARNING this video is not for those with ADD / ADHD!!! My attention deficit radar is going off the charts. Dog in the background, dog shaking in the background many many times, Eli on one monitor moving, Eli on the other monitor moving, strange four monitor setup that is not running in the background why?, low light hard to see Eli and whiteboard why?, Eli starring at Ubuntu loading back and fourth near the end. Good thing I love your videos cause man it was tough watching this one! Still love what your doing and I appreciate your efforts here! On the professional side I have two Dell hosts and an EMC SAN that a third party helped me setup. I was trying to understand the ESXi side of things and your explanation was great. Standing up a new server is as easy as Eli demonstrates.

3) Eli is using this as an example, he could be installing Windows NT 4. He chose it as an example for the sake of simplicity for the video, give the guy a break. This is an excellent introduction to Hypervisors (Thanks Eli) and something that I have been looking for, for a while. I'm going to ramp up my PC from 12GB of RAM to 24 and whack in a couple of new harddrives on RAID so that I can practice this video. You ROCK dude!

VMware's version of VDI uses ESXi on the back end. This is what I do for a living. (It's a good living.) I started virtualizing servers with ESX 2.54 and have worked with VI3 and then vSphere 4 and now vSphere 5. VMware View is the manager and broker for virtual desktops. Keep in mind the free version of ESXi does not include the APIs or functionality for control through vCenter, nor advanced features such as HA, vMotion, Storage vMotion, DRS, etc.

somethings I don't get: 1) you install vshpere on your main computer ? 2) the esxi must be installed on a different computer to act as a independent server? 3) following 1 and 2 , the instances are created on the same pc that the esxi was installed on, right? 4)when creating the OS for the instance I need to have it on a cd or just select that option from the hypervisor?
@cristianionutavram7678
@cristianionutavram7678 9 жыл бұрын
The ESXi is installed on the main SERVER. The one that must be on 24h/day. The vSphere should be installed on any computer you want to use for administration of the SERVER. For installing the OS you should have an .iso you must upload in the database of the SERVER.
@thisiswhoiam3913
@thisiswhoiam3913 9 жыл бұрын
enditend 2 1) Actually Vsphere is the entire suite including Vsphere Client, Vcenter, ESXi and other components. What he refers to is Vsphere client . And YES you install Vsphere Client on your computer or laptop 2) EXSi is the Hypervisor 1( bare metal) server, it is a physical server though not the desktop/laptop where Vsphere client is installed. 3) The two instances are created on/under the EXSi SERVER 4) it can be on a CD on the EXSi server itself or as an ISO on the Vsphere client or on SAN/NAS storage appliance. Depending which option you've chosen

In your earlier videos on "Introduction to Virtualization" you mentioned that the RAM allocation is dynamic in case of Type 1 Hypervisor and in this video you mentioned that the RAM allocation should be static else it might crash. Hi Eli, I just installed this esxi 5.5 on HP DL380 G6. I'm using a custom iso esxi 5.5u1 for the server itself. Everything is work but now i am trying to activate the license. I already got the key but i could find the option the assign the key either direct on the host/ using vsphere client. on vsphere client home page, i only got inventory>inventory & administration>roles&system logs. i've other videos the home page it should have a license under administration section.

I have a question, on Server you want to install the hypervisor, do you need to have an OS already installed on it to run it? If so, what would be recommended to have on it and or is the hypervisor server itself an OS?
@NossyDrelich

Cool video! I'm still confused, so a type 1 hypervisor is just a smaller OS that runs a bunch of VMs? How is it any different then booting from a VM with a boot loader? Aside from being able to configure everything within the console.
