Epistaxis, commonly known as a nosebleed, is a frequent condition that students should understand both for academic and practical reasons. For anterior bleeds, initial treatment includes pinching the nostrils together, leaning forward to prevent blood from entering the throat, and applying a cold compress. In cases where these methods are ineffective, medical interventions such as nasal cauterization or packing may be necessary. Posterior bleeds often require more complex interventions, such as posterior nasal packing or even surgical intervention, especially if they are recurrent or severe.
Students should be aware of the potential complications of epistaxis, including significant blood loss or airway obstruction, and recognize when to seek medical attention.
