Ick is often wrongly blamed for fish deaths when it was Epistylis all along. Treating for Ick when you have Epistylis can result in disaster, which then gets blamed on Ick.

I'm so glad I found your video. I moved two fish from one tank to another. Made sure to acclimate them properly. One was fine, and the other got 3 spots on the rear fin overnight. Clamped fins, and looked very sickly. I thought for sure it was ick.I was going to get rid of him before he could infect the other fish. Instead, I saw your video, waited, and the spots didn't spread on him or to others. I waited about 5 days, and he is spot free. He looks healthy and doing well. I'm so glad I didn't get rid of him or medicate the whole tank.

Glad I found this video since I was seeing a few of these raised white bumps on two of my flame tetras today--glad to hear that the things I got to start treating it (Ich-X and aquarium salt) will take care of this icky little critter too. I thought it was strange that they looked like they'd come down with Ich but it wasn't spreading and they weren't really having difficulty breathing, swimming, or eating at all.

I wish I found this video before I treated my "Ich" with heat... Lost 2 fish before I even knew what this disease was. In my defense, I had just gotten new fish that I stupidly did not quarantine (so I assumed they had brought it into the tank as they developed it first), AND I noticed it early enough that I didn't see any spots on the eyes yet and all the spots were uniform and not fuzzy, but I won't be making this mistake again now that I know this disease exists. Thank you for the clear distinction. It always seemed weird to me that fish in an established aquarium could get "flare ups" of Ich even if there were no new flora, fauna, or decorations.

Interesting, i had 3 of 6 harlequin, 4 out of 12 ember tetra go down with white spot, i used the temperature treatment, 86-89F. 4 days in still white spot, 6/7 days it reduced but one harlequin had a white spot on its eye, i was really confused why the heat treatment wasn't working for me, beginning of week 2 it came back worse i added half a cup of water infused for 2/3 days with a crushed garlic clove and maintained the temperature, the next last days of week 2 it disappeared, i did a 20% water change added more infused garlic water and maintained the temperature for 2 more days until i saw no more white spots reappear. It finally went away after 2 weeks with no loss of fish and no need for chemicals, whether the garlic helped i dont know, whether temperature helped i dont know i presumed it all worked together but watching this and recalling the white spot on the fishes eye i don't think i was treating Ick and would explain why it took 2 weeks to go away when temperature treatment kills of ick, maybe the treatment helped the fish through the process naturally i dont know either but i don't use chemicals for anything i would always go natural for infections salt and garlic, i use chlorine evaporation "seasoned water" for water changes, maybe if i added garlic sooner it wouldn't of taken so long who knows but i never get sick fish only once on this occasion after introducing new fish, thank god the white spot whichever it was just vanished and never came back, i always watch and enjoy all my tanks for many hours everyday so i noticed straight away and caught it early and treated with this method i still don't know if it was this treatment method or what but as i said i lost zero fish and it never came back.

I had a case of what I 'google-diagnosed' as Ich. But I've been looking at the photos and I really think I misdiagnosed and because of that, the treatment I gave probably helped to kill my fish. They were Chili Rasbora and they were so small, it was hard to identify, but its still crappy. After watching this I'm now pretty sure it was Epystilis.

My goldfish are in a small outside pond. They winter over and are really happy & healthy. We have one large goldfish that looks like it has white barnacles on it. I noticed it last year, it was small and almost looked like a snake tried to swallow him but let him go. It's what we assumed happened as we had been fighting a losing battle with a Northern water snake that is determined to live in this pond. The snake has the option of a larger pond just yards away with small minnows but he's just not giving up on the goldfish pond. In the last 2 days I've noticed the white clumpy spots are larger and he has become listless, staying by himself, not eating, hiding under a lily. After watching your video, I'm certain it's epistylis and not Ick but how do I handle this in an outdoor pond, with other fish, frogs, water lilies? I hope you can help me. He's a big boy/girl(?) and a beauty. Our goldfish all started out as feeder fish, are 3 or 4 yrs old and are stunning. When I add cool water from the hose, they actually leap up into the sprinkling water, come when I go out to feed them etc. Happy fish all around so this will be a sad loss if we lose this big guy.

If it's epistylis, then it's feeding on bacteria from the wound. You'll need to medicate the fish with antibiotics.

(No new fish in that tank for over a year.) Question: if you treat the tank with erithromycin, how long should you treat for, and would you wait to treat with the erithromycin after the ich-x gets rid of the symptoms on the fish or can you do both at the same time?

@@DanHiteshew-oneandonly thanks for answering. I won't do both at the same time. I read the article, too, very interesting, thanks for the link to that! These are black neons, and it looks most like one of the goldfish pics in that article, almost like a fungus, which is actually what I thought it was the first time. The thing that clued me into it not being ich or a fungus is that one of the times the fish were showing symptoms, I used chemiclean for cyanobacteria, thinking I'd just start the ich-x treatment once that was done. Their symptoms temporarily lessened while the chemiclean was in the tank. It makes me wonder if chemiclean kills some of the bacteria the epistylus feeds on as well, since it's a form of erithromycin. I still didn't know what it was though, and this only happens to the same 2-3 fish of the 7 in that tank. The other ones never seem to be affected. Never heard of epistylus before, so thank you so much for sharing this info and explaining it in such a consice way!

It is most likely either a fungal infection, or bacterial rot. I have had this with a couple of my betta in the past, and it needs to be treated right away. It spreads very fast and if it is rot, it will eat away chunks of your fish wherever it spreads to. I know there are people who say just using salt and other natural methods will cure your fish, but I have never had luck curing this type of infection in any of my fish using natural methods. I had to turn to medication to save their lives in these cases. However, you may have luck where I didn't. So I won't tell you what you should do as far as treatment. Just in my experience, the best luck I've had was using api fungus cure, general cure, and any of that blue anti fungal medication. I truly hope you can get your fish back in good health. And I hope what little info I offered is of help in some way as well:)

I was wondering if you could maybe give some help on what I might be dealing with, I think 2 of my fish died in this tank from bad amonia burns, luckily I noticed and didna good water change and vacuumed the gravel to clear out the amonia but I noticed 2 of the other fish have these white dots only on the outside of their gills and nothing else but this other fish has none but 2 spots about the same area only both sides are missing scales and are this reddish color. I'm treating for ich right now but the white dots just seem too big but they arent sticking out like the other thing so it's weird, I'm not sure if it is ich and it's really confusing me. The fish with no white dots i was talking about with the missing scales is also starting to kind of slow down and sit at the bottom of the tank but then would go up and almost gasp for air at the top (the others arent doing it). But smothering this is too, before the 2 fish died they had swim bladder and one had this bulge that grew on the last day it was alive
@DanHiteshew-oneandonly
@DanHiteshew-oneandonly Жыл бұрын
Treat with antibiotics asap. Kanaplex is pretty good. It sounds like the fish with the red area has hemorrhagic septicemia, and the others may have infections as well. Ick-X is a good all-around treatment for external issues too.

@@DanHiteshew-oneandonly so I just found out that the ick that I thought I saw was actually things male goldfish get when they sexually mature which is why they are only on the gills. But those 2 are pretty much perfectly fine but I am concerned about the smallest one with the missing scales, I do not think it's what you just said because it's not that red but I ment red as in the scales look like they got ripped off so it looks like theres tiny blood spots but it's still concerning why the scales are missing

So if I have one goldfish that had a few white sand looking spots on its body, that did not spread to any other fish, it’s probably Epistylis? It’s been a week or more, so far no other fish are sick, I did separate the sick goldfish after a few days but it was definitely in the tank with the other fish for a while. The fish itself is a Ranchu that’s never been very active, but doesn’t seem any different then normal. Still eats.
@DanHiteshew-oneandonly
@DanHiteshew-oneandonly Жыл бұрын
It's hard to say, but it doesn't sound like Ick. Is the water cooler? Ick slows down as the temp drops. If they are in room temp of 70 degrees, the Ick will be slower to spread. If it's Epistylis, then putting the affected fish in clean water for a few days or so should clear it up. It will have no bacteria to feed on. a liitle aquarium salt wouldn't hurt either.

@@DanHiteshew-oneandonly I have fancy goldfish so I keep them around 72-74. The separated fish I was treating for Ick- he is in a 10gal that’s set closer to 80 with salt. The white spots seem to have dissipated except for some that are hanging on via a clear stringy string…. ? Not sure what to call it. It’s not a worm or anything, I’ve had anchor worms I know what they look like. It’s just the little grains of salt with a clear string that floats that’s attached to the fish. It’s hard to see all the Ick/whatever it is because it was only in his wen and he’s fairly white there to begin with plus against the texture it’s hard to see. Maybe I will dose with antibiotics just to be safe? I was having a random Nitrate spike in the big tank, so I wonder if that caused whatever issues this one fish has.

Epistylis and ich are both caused by ciliates, little creatures that live in water; there are thousands of species. As others have suggsted a clean tank with good media, and adequate circulation are important. Also, salt kills them, but remember the salt you put in your tank does not go away without water changes to dilute it. These kind of maladies usually infect fish through the gills, because that is their most sensitive spot, similar to human nostrils. A poorly maintained tank will often have high nitrate levels, and that harms the fish's respiratory system, and when weakened they are much more susceptible to the various kinds of cilia.

@@DanHiteshew-oneandonly good idea That’s what it’s like it’s burnout . It’s not like I hate the hobby i been doing it 45 years, it’s just you can’t lie to yourself that every day it’s going to be fun because it isn’t. It’s also not like painting or craft where you can put it away for a couple of weeks, it’s a relentless daily task involved hobby add the fin wiggles at the tank when your not in the mood , it can get draining 🤔. I guess I’m just going through a low patch .eh . You can’t just shut down loads of tanks though it’s not about that. I realise it’s their home . Its about hanging in there on the low days or weeks when it’s the last thing you want to do . You made me laugh with the happy face joke 🤣🤣 It can be a mental battle when you have a few tanks . I am talking long term here , it’s not I just set a tank up and now don’t want to do it like a five year old . It’s the keeping it going very long term. Do you need a pic of your doppelgänger with a sad face ? 🤣 to demonstrate how things can go wrong with burnout 🤣 , like you get those meth pics of people who took too much 😜
