Ha! My uncle owned a bar when I was a little kid and my dad would take us down there a lot. Those kids playing cards in the back room made me laugh out loud because that was basically 85% of my childhood. I learned how to build a pint and break up a bar fight at Murphy's, two skills that will always be useful. New York Irish and Proud!

I know it's been 11 years, but I thought I'd mention that I had the same experience over here in Scotland. Mum worked a bar at the local train station and I always hung out back after school. Cards, marbles or tig games were the way to pass the time. this was in the late 90s.

Oh.. And that movie "gangs of new york", was a modern interpretation from a non-Irish perspective of what happened. LEMME ASK YOU... What was Scorsese doing telling our story? In the movie the Irish gangs weren't acting Irish, they didn't speak Irish, didn't dress Irish, didn't feel Irish and they didn't have our self-righteousness, friendliness our big mouths or sense of fairness. Why does Scorsese single out the Irish for attacking other nationalities? S.o. who knows the story shoud Remake it
@bollweevil1976 Жыл бұрын
I don't really understand? I thought he made us look pretty badass myself 🤷🏼♂️
@emmetor Жыл бұрын
@@bollweevil1976 Well, my views on the DropKick Murphy's song have mellowed a bit now.... that I can see it as an expression of it's own sort. It's just ... I can't explain it. In fact Bollweevil, that's a really good question. I'm gonna have to do meditate on that. It does look cool in hindsight as it's own thing... but just is different what I'd normally recognize as being Irish - even though I can hear it's probably based on the music of a traditional jig... So, I'll let that go. But gangs of New York..?? Is that what you were asking about? Yeah.. they looked tough... but you gotta remember that Ireland at the time was quite anti-racist, so having Irish people running through the streets of new york being racist was not a major part of the Irish story, when you consider that 20 to 25% of the entire New York population was Irish back then. The Gangs of New York was gratuitously violent like an Italian mafia movie. The Italians at home were always displaced by their gangs and controlled at the top, but the Irish were not like that. The Irish were controlled by the stories they told themselves. If there were Irish gangs, they would have had a plethora of reasons, motivations, explanations and all sorts of excuses for their tribal violence, and histories of grievances, because that's just how the Irish are - the big self-justification. And if the gangs in New York descended from the poorest parts of Irish society, that means they were mostly from the country, not the city.. It would have given them an faulty idealism that made them vulnerable as gangs, but ferocious if crossed. That's my 2 cents anyway

And I love Scorsese, the man is a fin genius.. I bow to his talent. It's just that there were contexts missing. I love when the diaspora does music or movies - like the Australians did Black 47, it was excellently done.
@bollweevil1976 Жыл бұрын
@@emmetor yeah I was just talking about the movie been awhile since I've seen it but as far as them being racist from what I remembered from the movie I thought it was the natives being racist against the Irish but being an Irish American myself I have pretty much no knowledge of how they were and how they were portrayed so I really have no idea or a leg to stand on but yeah I was just talking about the movie✌️
