Awesome! I was a glue user now I will give this a go! I have seen others do thread basting and it looked more complicated (extra steps) I don’t know 🤷🏻‍♀️ but you simplified it perfectly! I am excited to do it this way. I thought I was just not getting my stitches right with the glue basting! Thank you so much!

It makes such a difference I find, but again, everyone’s different, but I won’t glue anymore I don’t think

Thanks so much, Adam, for this wonderful tutorial. I started out using glue but have switched to thread basting for the same reasons you mentioned. I also find it way easier to remove the papers that have not been glued. It does look much better when thread basted. Bobbie 🙂

As someone who does both thread and glue basting trimming a neat seam allowance makes it easier to ensure you have a big enough Seam allowance and reduces the extra bulk which makes a big difference if you are hand quilting. If you leave the basting threads in be careful what colour thread you use. Some dark threads can show through light coloured fabrics. If you glue baste and aren’t using a fabric glue (I don’t) it’s always best to check that it does fully wash out. Look for starch based, washable glue sticks. Lastly if you do glue baste, do not glue right up to the edge of the paper, this makes it difficult to sew through the fabric as there is no gap between the fabric and card. It sounds like this is what you were doing which was why you found them more difficult to sew. The great thing about EPP is there really isn’t a right or wrong, just our own personal preference. The English Paper Piecing Society on FB is great for anyone interested in learning EPP, it’s a great friendly group with no quilt police allowed.

I prefer thread basting. I initially sewed through the papers but I have been doing them similar to the way you do them, similar as I have been using a single stitch, works ok if you're doing a small motif for applique but I struggled when trying to stitch a project. Will give your double stitch method a try. Thanks for showing this.

Thanks Adam, have been wanting to to start EPP to use up fabric scraps to make a memory quilt of fabric scraps from garments I have made. Was not looking forward to having to cut out a million hexagons-squares are the way forward.❤

I prefer thread basting over glue basting. I don't like that when you remove the papers the edges can come undone and you have to fiddle with them. I like a hole punched in the center of my papers so I can use a knitting needle, crochet hook or bodkin to remove the papers. I do mine similar to you, except I do run a bead of the glue stick/pen along one side of the paper and press it to my fabric square to help hold it in place. I don't cut mine either, unless it is a light color and in that case, I trim it after I've sewn my flower together. I like to use thread colors that I don't like for the basting or have had forever just to use them up. I use only 1 strand of thread. I also use a single strand when I sew the hexies together and prefer a 50wt for that. I also like to use a wonder clip to hold the hexies together while stitching. I put it on the side/edge to the right of where I'll be stitching. This also makes sure I don't accidentally start stitching on the wrong side/edge!

Stupid as it sounds I gave up thread basting because I only ever did one stitch through each corner and it didn't hold the fabric firmly enough doh! I'm going to ditch the glue sticks and do it like you, thanks Adam xx

Hi Adam, I also have a hexagon punch to make my own papers. This is less expensive than buying precut papers. I use a thinner cardstock, and I also scour the junk mail for cards the right thickness to use. Love the EPP. Good for filling in any length of time you might have.

Agreed! It fills in as much time as you have to devote to it. I ordered a punch today, which brand dyou have if you don’t mind me asking as some have poor reviews ☺️

I absolutely HATE being sticky…as a young child I would hysterically cry if my hands got sticky…and while I don’t have a meltdown when sticky as an adult-I still cannot stand being sticky and will actively avoid any and all activities that result in my experiencing the feeling of being sticky. So…glue basting is a Nope for me.

Good Morning Adam.! My very first quilt circa 1972 was the English flower, grandma garden and I did not know about the EPP. I outlined the fabric with pencil and pieced together by hand! It took me forever. I do remember it was to be a queen/double bed sized quilt, ended up being a. twin size and lucky to get it done and have not done anymore paper piecing. I had since read that that particular pattern was among the most started quilts and never finished! I have since become primarily applique, but recently doing pieced quilts. Since Tula, I've been entertaining doing another paper pieced with one of her patterns. I would do as you and use hand basting for all the very same reason you have said, good advice. I just posted on FB a quilt I finished the other day, go check it out! Have a good week!

Morning Renee! I can imagine that would have taken forever! My lovely friend Judi from @runningsewandso marks the stitch lines etc on her hand piecing, she makes beautiful hand peiced quilts and her whole cloth quilt she made is stunning too. I’m gonna make a double gauaze whole cloth quilt one day hehe. I’ll go see if I can find you on Facebook! 😁

This is a great way to thread baste, I've used it for a while now. This way, you don't have to take the basting stitches out if you don't want to when the pieces have been sewn together. I punch a couple of small holes through middle of the paper templates before using them, and this makes them so much easier to get out with a small tool - a small crochet hook/darning needle/etc You literally just poke through both of the holes, pull, et voila! Thanks for the vlog :)

I am watching you while I unpick my Saturday Skirt pockets. I sewed the pockets to the back instead of the front and realized it when I went to sew back to front!!!! No excuse other than was not paying attention to what I was doing.

Thanks Adam. I am sewing hexies without paper. I have even tried it on my featherweight which did work but defeats the hand stitching project. I often go rogue but I like the stitch method you show here. I may be a convert soon. lol.

I normally thread baste through the paper and then remove the threads and paper later ….. does this mean you leave the threads in .
@AdamSews

You can do if you stitch near the edge and pop a hole punch in each paper, then you can hook them out with a crochet hook 😁
