Listen you can also a fast twist barrel on a 7 REM if you want to, then you can spend a bunch of money on reloading supplies and slap those heavy bullets in your same rifle instead of buying a new rifle in 7PRC if the heavy bullets are your focus. What I will tell you though is that if you do that it will likely be the more expensive and time consuming option.
@jfess19114 ай бұрын
The most common accuracy issue seen with faster twist is from out-of-balance bullets. If the jacket thickness is not uniform or if there is a void (bubble) or other irregularity in the lead core, the bullet jumps laterally as it leaves the muzzle. The faster the twist, the larger the jump. This seems to be less of a problem today, but is still common with cheaper ammo.

Shot placement is most important. Bullet selection is more important than caliber.

Hi Ron, love your podcasts. Great explanation on MOA, but as an engineer I need to add to it. Minute of Angle is a traditional measurement of angle. There are 360 degrees in a full circle, 60 minutes of angle in a degree, and 60 second in a minute. This system is often still used in navigation with coordinates given in Degrees, Minutes, seconds of latitude and longitude. And 1 minute of latitude is 1 nautical mile, as is 1 minute of longitude at the equator. So in short, a 1MOA rifle is keeping its shots within a cone 1/60 of a degree wide.
@donbenson52924 ай бұрын
I see the standbys based on traditional cases being the 308, 30-06 and the 300 win mags. You can find just about anything you need on those base cartridges. I personally enjoy the heck of a lot of 260 Rem and AI versions in various configuration. One good reamer and a throater I can tune any bullet in a certain twist. I havent "tuna fish" though!!!! Lol Good luck on your fishing trip.

I almost always keep the rifle shouldered while cycling the bolt with a self loader… lol. 35:16 47:31 it stabilizes those long bullets as long as you just shoot north or south, coriolis effect, you know😅 Sorry Ron, just having one of those days, I guess. Being serious, though, when solid copper bullets first hit the market, I was… let’s call it sceptical. But it seems that, in rifles, anyway, they seem to be proving advantageous and I wonder why we didn’t get there a century or more ago. Being able to cast bullets at the campsite could definitely be one reason, or simply being easy to cast them at all before the advent of machine tools? Maybe because without high velocities the copper bullets just wouldn’t expand and by the time we had smokeless powders we already were set in our ways regarding lead projectiles? What do you think? My thoughts originally were that we did solid copper only because the environmentalists demanded it and it would hamper hunting effectiveness, but I see now that this clearly isn’t so. For me, my hunting rifles are a .270, a .300 savage and a .35 Whelen, so none of those are likely to benefit from the high bc bullet designs that have made copper bullets so effective, but there’s no telling when I suddenly buy a new rifle… 53:28 having a rifle that groups 2moa does not mean that your shots will land inside an 8” circle at 400 yards unless you’re hunting with a concrete bench and a lead sled. This is why I prefer to use a rifle as accurate as I can get. It’s to make up for MY mistakes and still keep me in the vital zone. If I were hunting with a laser beam I doubt if I could maintain a 4” group at 400 yards, especially offhand. 55:21 I didn’t grow up hunting because my dad went hunting once in college and described the experience as, ‘walking around in the woods with a rifle’ as though that was a bad thing. I’ve always wondered if we’re related somehow?

The 6.5 Grendel case is related to the 7.62x39, is considerably smaller than that of the 243 and just does not hold enough propellant to approach its energy. Most Grendel loads have around 30 grains or powder. With 100 grain bullets, the 243 is closer to 50 grains of propellant. To give some energy number, Hornady has pretty fast loads for both, with the Grendel 100gr at 2730fps and 1655ft-lbs energy . Hornady's admittedly hot 95grain Superformance load for the 243 is 3185fps and 2139ft-lbs. Their milder loads still are well over 1900 ft-lbs.

You are right about shooting quickly ( follow up shots) I watch a lot of hunting videos and the shooter fires a shot and instead of staying in the scope and instantly cycling the bolt while recovering from recoil they drop the rifle down to their hip and look towards the target, meanwhile the PH is saying hit it again and of course they are way too slow because they are cycling the rifle down by buy their hip. I competent rifle man keeps the rifle on his shoulder.

Something to note with “Minute Of Angle” is that it isn’t something that shooters created to describe accuracy, it was already a measurement that just happened to work out well for what most precise rifles can shoot as distance lengthens.
@mikelyons79934 ай бұрын
A minute of angle is 1/60 of a degree, just as a minute of time is 1/60 of an hour. Conveniently an inch at 100 yards is very close to 1 MOA, so that's an easy unit for rifle shooting.

Good discussion on zeroing at cold temperatures. Anschutz in Germany in fact has a special range that they use for sighting and testing of their biathlon rifles. I believe the rules for that sport say that a match can start at temperatures down to-20 degrees C. So they have the capability to cool the rifle and ammunition to-20 C and shoot for accuracy. It not only shows the point of impact shift at different temperatures as you discussed, but it also proves that the rifle and ammunition will function flawlessly at arctic temperatures. So there’s certainly value in this for extreme conditions. Another great video Ron!

Re: The .257 Roberts. Look at the performance envelope of the .257 Roberts using achievable velocities using real world physics and it is easy to see just how versatile old Bob is. Old Bob has a water case capacity of 59.2 grains, the .243 Winchester 56.0 grains and the 6.5 Creedmore only 51.7 grains. In the real world more capacity equals more grunt. For those that believe old Bob's case can't handle the same pressure as the 6.5 Creedmore, well the .257 Roberts and the 6mm Remington are the same parent case (7x57 Mauser) necked down. Now SAAMI list the maximum average pressure (MAP) of the 6mm Remington as 65000 psi. Hmmm, no wonder those of us that handload old Bob's love them.

The explanation I've seen for "overstabilization" of a bullet is that any bullet imperfection will cause unwanted vibration and once you exceed the minimum RPMs to stabilize, the vibrations will get even worse Anytime an imperfect object spins, the imperfection will cause vibration, so this is a plausible theory. Now whether or not it makes any significant difference in real world accuracy is another matter. Personally, I think it probably does NOT make a difference nowadays as much as in the past because bullet manufacturers have continually improved quality and as bullets get closer to perfection, overstabilization becomes less and less of an issue.

The 175 grain Federal Terminal Ascent and the 180 grain trophy bonded copper and 180 nosler partion for 30-06 are what help that carteidge be a legitimate 400+ yard Elk cartridge
@Manbunmen654 ай бұрын
Have you shot it out of your rifle at 400 yards? I have shot the terminal ascent at 425 yards in my rifle. With a 200 yard zero and no hold over, 9 inches of drop and group of 2.5 inches. Yes that's right only 9 inches of drop! Oh I forgot to tell you it's in a 6.5 PRC and the average velocity out of the 24 inch is 3150. Flatter, hits harder than the 30-06 at distance.
@brandonhill21834 ай бұрын
@Manbunmen65 yes I have. I have shot every cartridge out of my 30-06 or else I wouldn't comment. 30-06 ELDx or Terminal ascent has 22 inches of drop at 400 with a 24" barrel. Ok and? So what, you have a 6.5 PRC, good for you. Want a cookie? And the drop is 17 inches for a 6.5PRC zeroed for 200. Now do energy at yardage and see the difference. 30-06 has 120 pounds more energy at 400 yards than a 6.5 PRC. I can easily compensate for the 22 inch drop at 400 yards with an 06. Are you done trying to measure dicks now?
@jmc0410714 ай бұрын
Hi Ron, speaking of rechambering, I dont know if you follow any of the F Class shooting world, but several F Class shooters are doing something new, or new to me, with the 6.5 PRC. They are necking it up and putting a 7mm bullet in it and calling it a 7PRCW. As I understand it, the W is for Wheeler, which is the last name of the person that started it. I haven't heard of anyone using it for hunting but I think it could be used for that, and I'm very interested to see if anyone will use it for hunting and make some videos on it. Just thought i would mention that cartridge to you. I know you love all things related to cartridges and thought you might find this interesting.
@jfess19114 ай бұрын
FWIW, it is often called the 7-6.5 PRC. The Wheeler variant is tuned for the 180 grain Berger hybrid bullet with a specific throat angle.

On your question of the 30-06 popularity, I'm from eastern Canada and it is still a very popular choice. We have dense forests with not a lot commonly found open ranges to take advantage of "long range shooting". The 30-06 is plenty if not overkill for all our game animals (deer/black bear/moose) especially within the typical shooting ranges of less then 200 yards; Magnums are fine but totally overkill for our typical hunting, it would be high on my list as a recommendation to a hunter looking for a pared down rifle collection that covers it all.
@Manbunmen654 ай бұрын
Then the 6.5 PRC is overkill
@ntokozodlamini84264 ай бұрын
Well, while mentioning about the the popularity of the old 30-06 Springfield cartridge, here in South Africa in KZN and the Free State province particularly, in the 30 caliber family of cartridges the 30-06 is a staple cartridge followed by a 308 and a 300 win mag, at least in my opinion. In a well stocked gunshop here you'll find maybe 5 different rifle makes chambered in the 30-06. Here, I haven't seen the family of PRC cartridges and rifles yet. The 30-06 is nowhere near to be extinct.

One thing to remember right now, the economy is trashed so people aren’t wanting to risk the cash on something they are unsure of or just on extra rifles in general. My old 270 still gets the job done so I have no need for a new rifle. But you can bet when the economy picks back up and I can again afford to buy new rifles just because I feel like it a 7prc and 6.8 western will be added to my collection, 300prc and 375 Ruger are also on the list for rifles I’d like to add just in case I go to Africa some day. But I’m an independent trucker, so right now it’s bare bones till the economy recovers from poor choices politicians make.

As far as cold and hot goes. The steel changes in temp extremes bbit just the ammo. So pressures more than likely go up as the steel shrinks olus the ammo is cold and powder burns cooler so i am not sure how much it does. I know in my experience in cooler weather my rifles shoot a litle better until it gets really cold then accuracy decreased with it. Its kind of odd. But just cooling your ammo down doesnt tell the whole story i think.
