P50 actually looks alright

Have been looking forward to this and your quick impression made me wanting this even more and so happens I’m in Shanghai and visited ZhiYinTang audio shop just now. Eagerly sat down and tested the p50, liked it at first listening and indeed the first impression was that it sounded similar to SM4. Went on to compare it with other iems and found it very competitive against other more expensive ones. But when I picked up Aful 5+2, I was hooked and when A/B both suddenly P50 sounded so dull. I actually wished it had more sub bass, actually more punch overall and more treble. It’s also harder to drive. In the end I went for the Aful and picked up a smooth sounding limited edition EPZ TP35 along the way.

Nice contribution, Paul. I wasn't a fan of SM4, myself and had the same thoughts regarding its tuning. So this P50 is intriguing!

Right, SM4 is a nice set, but the tuning is for one set of preferences, P50 will hit a more general preference.

These do look really interesting. Micro planar drivers are steadily taking their place as an alternative to EST, I guess.

Which is a good thing because these iem est drivers loose their charge overtime

Is that open back for show or functional? I've been craving a more technical open back iem than the aoshida e20. Hope it sounds good as it graphs.

Also it graphs very similar to the Softears Studio 4, but given how different the driver config is it must sound different.

Not sure on that. My gut says more different than it appears but I also haven't head Studio 4.

I didn't have PEQ. But now that I have both Supermix and P50 on squig, just use AutoEQ to generate it.

Nice graph indeed, nice flat mid. I have Kiwi Ears Quintet here, which I think was amongst the first iem that were released with micro planars, wondering how the open back on p50 and 2 microplanars differs from 1 microplanar + 1 piezoelectric on Quintet and also supermix 4. This one did grab my interest.

My two second thought on that, Quintet had that harsh spot. Not everyone noticed it, but P50 doesn't have that. If you were to ask EPZ, they would probably say their microplanars are second generation.

try an impedance adapter on the sm4 lol. I was wondering why I liked the playback so much more on my btr7 4.4.....turns out it's 2.8ohms output O_o.

@@Hijynx87 the Yongse Ruyi Rod cable review by Omar would do 15 Ohm adapter effects on the SM4. Increases subbass, just not what Paul has suggested.

Yep, SM4 has a crazy impedance response. 2.8 probably gives you a decent but not crazy boost.
