Putting a GEQ in the loop of my tube amps was the most powerful tone secret I ever learned. The second most powerful was a GEQ in front.

The best thing I ever did for my guitar tone was to hook up a 10-band EQ into the amp. I had an MXR 10-band graphic and just decided to use it as a Tubescreamer to push the front of the amp. I've never looked back.

Thanks for this Leon! The placement of the EQ was interesting to me. This will help me with the Axe FX III and how I build presets.

Pre/post EQ is where the magic is. A lot of "boutique" amps have very similar circuits and just use different input and output filtering to create their signature sound.

Thank you for this! Gold for a tone chasing beginner. I wonder about the position in the chains? Last in the loop and directly after the guitar pre? Keep up the great videos man, massive knowledge for me 👍

Best thumbnail of 2020. I mean it's early days, but that's certainly a contender! Also, great to hear some EQ love, admittedly a bit of a boring pedal, but just really useful!

5150 III EL34 Blue Channel fix (for me anyway). I was trying to tame the low end of a Jackson but inout eq in AxeFx wasnt enough. I tried putting a PEQ up front and - BAM! It worked so well digitally I decided to pick up a 5150 and test my theory. I had tried boosting the blue before but didnt really like it. Input EQ is a real game changer for me. Thanks for putting this together Leon with a real-time demonstration. It is worthy of “massive”. Another important thing you mentioned is a great reminder. Dont be afraid to try making big cuts and moves in eq in general. It took a -9 db lowshelf from 350 Hz on down to tame that Jackson in some situations, but now Im much happier with it and loving what Im getting out of all 3 channels of a physical 5150.

Hi Leon! As always, amazing vids you are putting through and great share of your technical knowledge!!! A quick question: I see that in the amp-loop configuration, you slightly increased the 30Hz, 60Hz & 120Hz, but I generally learned from your settings that cutting frequencies under 160Hz with a high pass filter is usually a good idea. Do you think those 3 bands are sonically interesting at post-gain position? Keep Rockin’
@LeonTodd

TLDR: doing the Metallica Mesa Mark series "V shape" thing a bit. Generally cutting low end in post in to remove the proximity effect of close micing - the way I used it here, before the power amp, is similar to the way you would do it on something like a Mesa Mark series amp. Since it hits the power amp and get's processed there, through the transformer and through the speaker cab that sounds slightly different than just adding everything in post.

3:20 - I designed a combination distortion/twin-t-wah about 19 years ago with the wah relatively early in the signal chain. I think I still have it breadboarded somewhere. The schematic probably still exists out on one of the guitar stompbox forums somewhere....

The idea was to push the mids in front of the distortion, and generate an easier transition into infinite sustain and feedback. Not many places let you play loud enough to do that using volume, so focused gain was the next best solution.... :)

For a dual rectifier with EQ in the loop - since the loop is parallel and has SEND and MIX knobs, I assume you need MIX at 100%, true? What do you set your SEND level to?

I have a question for you Leon since I believe you mentioned you run in ears when you perform. Have you experienced a situation where you've crafted your sound using speaker cabinets at volume, and then when you use your IEMs the sound is totally different?, particularly in regards to the level of distortion. My setup is the following: Axe-FX 3 -> Matrix GT1600 -> Matrix FRFR cabinets. When I play at loud, stage volumes, there sounds like there's plenty of distortion coming from the speakers and my sound is just great. But when I ran my IEMs during a rehearsal, it sounded like most of my gain was gone. I was pretty shocked at this. I'm running the Petrucci JP2-C amp yellow channel. At volume through speakers, having the input drive set to 2.8 sounded great. But for it to even have distortion through my IEM, I had to bump it to 5.5 Have you experienced this before and have any possible solutions I could try out?
@LeonTodd
@LeonTodd 4 жыл бұрын
Nothing to do with overall drive levels, but the nature of IEM means the overall "tone" is different through IEM. I prioritise the FOH tone over my ears and I try to listen to the drums as much as possible in my ears anyway.
@RamboMadCow
@RamboMadCow 4 жыл бұрын
@@LeonTodd Have you gotten a chance to hear the FOH to make sure it sounds the way you want it? Is hearing my sound through FRFR cabinets a closer representation of FOH speakers and their reproduction of my sound? My concern is that what I hear in my IEM might be a closer representation of what the FOH receives, but it sounds like you're saying it's not. Are there any tricks that you're aware of to get the IEM to sound closer to what I hear from my FRFR cabinet?

I know people like to use a noise gate both in front of the amp and in the fx loop, is there any benefit to having an EQ in both places?
@LeonTodd
@LeonTodd 4 жыл бұрын
If you're massively boosting gain/EQ the gate works great in combination with them to manage noise and it can give you that djenty staccato thing if needed.

@@LeonTodd ahhh I see! I was tossing between the EQ200 and the MXR 108S, wound up just rolling with the mxr because $$$. The EQ200 would have been a perfect demo for this because you could have applied the exact same settings before and after preamp to A/B and had that instand comparison!
