EQing depends on 3 major things: 1) The input sound 2) The context of the sound in the mix 3) What you're trying to achieve - so with that said it's virtually impossible for me to tell you "do this" and "do that" to make your sound better, or fit better given your situation. So with that, I'd like to stress practice, practice, practice. The more you experiment with analyzing sounds, the more your ear develops, and the better you get at determining where and how EQ should be applied. Having said that, and like I mentioned in the video, I could do some followup videos with more examples of EQing certain sounds in certain situations if it would be helpful to some people.

I wish this video was out when I first started to learn about EQ. Even though I know everything that you covered in this video, it's great to see someone who actually knows what they're talking about. You went in depth and broke down the essentials. Great video man.

Mastering is basically the final step after producing, recording, and mixing. It "enhances the final mix," so to speak. It makes the song louder without loosing quality, but it's more than just that, there's more to it, but mastering is pretty much making the final touches to the mix. Hope this helps, lol.

What I find very important in EQing is the fact that you should NEVER mess with EQs after an hour or two of working with music or listening to it. Our auditory system adapts to the levels of perceived sound, and after some time we actually hear the music differently than when we started. The same way we perceive noisy environment less noisy after some time spent in it, we also adapt to music. That's why something that sounded awesome after 5 hour of working in the studio can sound crap the next day when you first hear it. Many people I know tend to produce at the lowest volume they find useful in order to avoid this problem, only occasionally turning the volume up when needed.

Yes, this is absolutely correct and critical to be aware of. If I EQ I usually stick to small changes if I've been listening to the sound for a while. I also tend to layer on changes so I can review them with fresh ears. I can also confirm that several pro audio people I know mix at the lowest volume possible. High volume can wear the ears out and make the reaction you speak of more prominent, it is also easier to properly hear what you need to when mixing.

I always keep a copy of one track so I can compare the previous version to the new one I’m working with. That way I don’t have to worry about my ears adapting as much. Once I’m done, I choose whichever audio track sounds the best.

I'm an electronic producer and deaf in my left ear. I've been playing piano since 8, guitar since 12, drums since 14, and producing music since 21. I'm not rich. Nor do I come from a well-off background. I took after school lessons starting in 3rd grade at my school back in 1992. I was lucky enough to have those resources at my grade/elementary school and I took up snare drumming in my high school's marching band. I made connections with other students and listened to as many different genres as I could - picking up certain things from each genre. As I got to community college to study music theory and production techniques, I was introduced to DAW and synthesizer music production and released I could produce just about genre I wanted. I couldn't believe that digital synthesizers could mimic obsure instruments like a jaw harp or didgeridoo. Over the course of 15 years producing music, I've trained my right ear (the good ear) to be very attentive while being cautious not to blow it out with loud music. I taught myself to mix and master at low volumes using headphones. I'm able to smooth out the sounds and frequencies with EQ when I can, yet like your posting on the top comment, it all starts with the input signal of the source. If it the input sounds bad, there's no amount of EQing anyone can do to fix it.

great video! You explained it very well, and i learned a thing or two, thanks! One thing that came to mind in regards to your talk of "curves", "lo" and "high" cuts etc: When mixing, and especially when working with highly "visually stimulating" sources like parametric eq's, it's important to remember to mix with your ears and not with your eyes. All these beautiful shapes and curves can be deceiving. Best advice is to find frequency you want to work on, grab freq. by mouse click and then look away from screen and use your ears. It's frighteningly easy to fall in to "the mode of the screen"... so to speak? idk.. just my experience with working with sound in the past - i'm no expert:) But once again, great vid:)

This is a very basic and understandable explanation to EQ very well said great video. I would also like to add some details the Frequency spectrum which is 20hz to 20KHZ, are all in Logarithm and you can see the Harmonics overtones in this specific EQ so when he plays the bass line you can see that the frequencies are all cut from mid low to higher you can see the lines in higher frequencies which is the harmonic overtones these are pretty important music wise.. the fundemental tone every octave is made of twelve steps and equals two times the frequency (for example, the fifth A is 440 Hz and the higher octave A is 880 Hz and you can guess the higher octave which again is twice the frequency so the next octave for the A note will be 1760HZ and so on.. this knowledge can be helpful musically speaking.. you can see which frequencies are actually notes and you can filter what isn't necessary and we don't really hear up to 20KHZ more like 18-19(which is amazing if you are an adult to hear above 18KHZ) because in time you lose some of the hairs in your ear in the cochlea only children can hear 20KHZ.. anyways great video well said and to the point.. what I know is more for the Engineering level.. (which has much more details just to long to explain XD)

Good insights. Might be worth mentioning that you're working with sounds which have already been processed. In the examples, the bass and pluck sounds: frequencies have been rolled off with a LOW-PASS and a HIGH-PASS respectively. For the pluck, the reverb has been compressed with a HP filter and turned up for presence. Here's the money shot: In your mix, you will want to REMOVE certain frequencies from less important sounds so that the frequencies of more important sounds become more present. EQ isn't an art. It's a science. It's an art until you understand what you're doing. Take out the freqs you don't like and enhance the ones you like but can't hear so well. Then Prioritise you tracks. That means you need to sacrifice freqs according to priority.

I was just scouring youtube for simple tutorials for some of my sound guys, without all the useless conversation about their DAW or Plug-ins that they are trying to sell, that wastes so much of ones time. I haven't watched your compression vids, but you nailed it with the simplicity and clarity of your eq tutorial. I can finally refer people somewhere without having to be embarrassed or apologize for all the useless chatter of the so called tutorial. Awesome!
