"Without love, without anger, without sorrow...breath is just a clock ticking."
2002's EQUILIBRIUM is an understated and often overlooked science fiction film written and directed by Kurt Wimmer. One of the earliest leading vehicles for Christian Bale, the story follows the lead enforcer of a totalitarian regime erected in the wake of World War 3. Tasked with destroying all items which allow human beings to feel and incarcerating...or assassinating...those guilty of exhibiting emotion, he finds himself caught in the spectrum of human emotion when he misses his dosage of a nullifying drug, opening his eyes to cruelty and his heart to revolution.
While several aspects of its aesthetics and action seem directly inspired by other films...ranging from FAHRENHEIT 451 to THE MATRIX...I think the film is actually quite spectacular in its craftsmanship and Bale's performance in particular. Ironically it seems in parallel to his role as Patrick Bateman in AMERICAN PSYCHO albeit in stark contrast...but you do find yourself most compelled by what he goes through and his journey through either film.
